The Patek Philippe Nautilus and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak - Chrono24 compares the two icons, which were designed in the 1970s by the legendary Gerald Genta.
Some 40 years later, these two timepieces remain among the most often compared in the entire industry. So we asked our colleagues at Chrono24’s headquarters in Karlsruhe, Germany to tell us what they think about these two watch jumbos.

Haha, I would have got that 5711 for free. If there are any iconic watches out there, those two most definitely are, so I must admit that it's kind of strange that Chrono24 has so many employees that arent more familiar with that two iconic watches :)

Indeed it was. The AP was a modern jumbo from the early 200's, the Patek however was vintage from the 1970's :)

If you say PP vs AP then very obvious If you say Royal Oak vs Nautilus then not really Royal Oak is a bit over AP, you see the different? By getting RO you get the best of AP in this case, Nautilus not even close. For that wrist shot, I'd take Nautilus

You would be surprised how many people who work for brands in the industry are not familiar with other brands/models ;) Some of our colleagues, just like the aforementioned industry people, are coming from departments like front end development, HR, or Finance. So their main tasks do not involve being experts in watches. Yet, they are passionate about them and this is all that matters. The rest will come :)

Royal Oak water resistance is just unacceptable. People will say "shut up no one's gonna swim with an AP" but I'd like to have atleast Casio level water resistance if I'm dishing out 30k for a watch. With the amount of craftsmanship and attention to detail generally associated with the Oak a 10 bar water resistance doesn't seem to be something very tough to achieve. My Tissot prx has 10 bar💀

Well I think the overseas is better than the AP, for sure. But in overall horology, I would save vacheron is right up there with Patek Philippe, because they create almost all of their own in-house movements, where a lot of Patek Philippe movements were based on other manufacturers base platforms. The Nautilus, Royal Oak, and Overseas, all used JLC based movements, until recently. The PP and APRO just look dated. I've worn all 3 and I still prefer the VC.

But all things considered, I want everyone to keep talking up the Nautilus and the Royal Oak, that way it leaves more Overseas for the people who actually enjoy watches and not worried about trying to make a profit off of one. If you go on any website, there are more AP Royal Oaks and Nautilus for sale, typically, than the Overseas, the reason is, the Overseas isn't made in the same large numbers.
