Contact tmosso@thewatchbox.com for pricing and availability; Either I have it, or I can get it! Patek Philippe vs. Audemars Piguet. Luxury watches - sports watches - battling for the Olympus of high horology. In today’s luxury watch market, steel sports watches dominate, and both Nautilus and Royal Oak enjoy dealer wait lists, pre-owned markups, and fanatical fanbases.
A rivalry born with AP’s 1875 birth opened a new front in 1976, when Patek Philippe commissioned designer Gerald Genta to pen a response to his own stainless steel Audemars Piguet Royal Oak sports watch. The 1976 Patek Philippe Nautilus was distinct enough to offer a counterpoint to AP’s angular Royal Oak, but rarely have two rival luxury watch models been so clearly cut from the same cloth. Now powered by in-house movements with center second dials, offered in a range of dial designs, and somewhat different in dimensions and durability than their ancestors, the flagship sports watch of AP and Patek are ready to battle over the modern luxury watch buyer’s heart and money.
The Royal Oak 15400st.oo.1220st.02 is the most modern steel three-hand Royal Oak that Audemars Piguet offers. Its case, dial, and bracelet tandem date to the Royal Oak’s 2012 40th anniversary SIHH collection. Now 41mm in stainless steel, the Royal Oak 15400ST “02” also sports a cool silvery white tapisserie dial that we considered ideal for a summertime watch comparison. The essential lines from 1972 remain intact, but from clasp to bracelet to caliber, this is a more robust Royal Oak than the 15202 extra thin that hews more closely to the 1972 original. Audemars Piguet equips each Royal Oak 15400 with a manufacture caliber 3120. It’s a 40-jewel automatic with a 60-hour power reserve, hacking (stop) seconds, and quick-set date for convenience. Audemars Piguet designed this movement for both the Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore, so the full balance bride and free-sprung balance provide a measure of shock resistance. AP’s Royal Oak 15400 offers a screw-down crown rather than the Royal Oak 15202’s push-down; the rated water resistance depth of each is identical at 50-meters, but the 15400’s rating is a more reliable 50 than the 15202; do not swim with a 15202 unless you like to live dangerously… and expensively.
Patek Philippe’s Nautilus last was refreshed in 2006 during its own 30th anniversary model year. The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A-010 is a blue-dial stainless steel poem in metal, sapphire, and brass. Its slinky two-link bracelet feels as smooth as silk on the wrist, and though less robust, its deployant clasp is far more elegant than the Audemars’ chunky double-folding equivalent. Patek has preserved the essential lines of the original Nautilus 3700, but the original monoblock case construction vanished more than a decade ago. Nevertheless, 120-meter water resistance is available despite the use of a display case back; the original Nautilus 3700 never reconciled these features. Patek has further elaborated on the 1976 Nautilus with center-seconds, a gorgeous silver metallic dial, and an in-house automatic caliber 324 SC. Although the 35-45 hour power reserve of the caliber 324 cannot match AP 3120, and the 324 lacks stop seconds, Patek’s movement offers advanced technology in its details. A Patek Philippe Spiromax silicon hairspring protects against magnetic fields, and ceramic rotor bearings combine with unidirectional winding for superior winding efficiency. Patek Philippe adjusts each Nautilus 324 S C in six positions - chronometers generally boast only five - and Patek guarantees timing of -3/+2 seconds per day or better. The Patek caliber 324 also offers indisputably finer finish than the Audemars Piguet rival, and the slim Patek caliber is the reason why this Nautilus 5711 is 8.5mm thick compared to the AP Royal Oak 15400’s 9.9mm thickness.
Will the Patek Philippe Nautilus topple its eternal rival, or has the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak tightened its grip on the championship belt? Find out on VERSUS#9!

A 15202 wouldn't have been appropriate for this test based on the Nautilus' dramatic performance and durability advantages, but a blue Jumbo RO/SS would have been my choice over the 5711. They're not directly comparable on a comparison basis unless emotion is the only criterion. Best, Tim

You wouldn't be disappointed. The people who make the screws for the Patek don't know whether that screw is going into a grand complication with a sapphire back or a basis 5196 with a 215 manual and a solid back. Finish of all Nautilus caliber components is uncompromising. Best, Tim

I prefer the Nautilus...can't do 50m water resistance. I'm surprised the AP RO ticks at 21,600VpH...I would have thought it would have had a higher beat rate. Brian Govberg always talks about how difficult it is for the date disc to match the dial color perfectly...to my eye both of these missed on that feat.

A beautifully presented and scripted comparison video with lots of interesting details. I must say i was very disappointed by the actual dial of the Nautilus, especially when compared to the blue dial version. The AP dial however has oodles of character and panache. Very hard to choose between the two - I prefer the size of the PP, the smoother sweep second hand because of the higher beat movement, and the WR rating is far superior however I’m more drawn to the AP’s personality even though I recently hit 50 and am not a rock star or basketball player!

In this bout the AP takes the PP in looks because I just do not like the oxidized gold on the white dial. If this were blue vs blue, the Nautilus would have my vote for sure. I still think both of them are too much right now, and the overseas would be my choice. But the bathyscaphe for me will be the ultimate balance of sport and luxury, and at prices approaching 6k pre-owned, it's hard to argue with.

I thought about blue-vs-blue and 5711 vs. 15202. In the end, I wanted to break up the norm a bit, so I went with the summery silver dials. Personally, my money goes towards more interesting watches - especially complications - from less heralded brands and model lines. Pay a $20,000 premium for a used 5711? No thanks. Buy an IWC DaVinci perpetual calendar chronograph for nine grand? That's more my speed. Best, Tim

Really enjoying these "Versus" videos Tim! I'm with you on this one. Since both of these watches occupy a very luxury space, I hesitate to even think of them as sports models. The Nautilus, with its more wearable dimensions, significantly higher refinement of finishing, and incredible value retention has to take the edge here despite the imposing price tag.

I'd chose the Nautilus for the same reasons. There's more grace to its lines and beauty in its finish. But with 120-meter water resistance, lots of lume, and automatic winding, I don't hesitate to call the 5711/1A a sports watch. Best, Tim

Fair enough! Having never had the pleasure of seeing these models in person, I was definitely surprised by the generous lume. You've mentioned a couple times recently that the AP 3120 movement doesn't have much hand finishing. I respect your opinion, but I own a 15400 (and a 15202) and both movements look absolutely gorgeous to me. I also attended one of the AP watchmaking classes and assembled a 3090 movement (the hand wind version of the 3120), and the case parts under a loop look to be very well finished. First glance, I like the RO better, the dial textures and shape are more attractive. The slim lines of the case add to the appeal. With a second look, the readability of the Nautilus is easier on the eyes, and I would be entranced at the movement for days at a time. It comes down to how it wears, and the RO is too big for my thin wrists, and the Nautilus sits perfectly. If I had to choose, it would be the Nautilus.

Hi Tim, in your other videos of the nautilus 5711, the rigid end to end link measures 51-52mm. It differs quite significantly from the 46mm in this video.
@the1916companywatchreviews
@the1916companywatchreviews 6 жыл бұрын
I reconsidered how I measured this dimension. If you follow the curve of the bracelet to its flared extreme, you can measure 51-52mm, but I decided after much thought that 51+ didn't really express how this watch wears. I now measure the link that joins the bracelet to the case on each side. A Rolex GMT-Master 116710 wears 51 lug-to-lug and feels it, but the 5711 wears more like a 36mm Datejust (i.e., 44-45mm lug to-lug). The key is that I provide the same wrist shot and wrist size info across all of my videos so that viewers can see what I see and use that - not the raw measurement - as the true model of scale. Best, Tim

@the1916companywatchreviews
@the1916companywatchreviews 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Peter. The other reason that I changed the measuring standard for my 5711 reviews is that the end-link remains on the watch whether you fit the bracelet to your 5711 or order Patek's swim-friendly rubber strap -- or the dry-only leather accessory strap. The strap has a different profile than the bracelet, but the distance between the end links remain the same. Best, Tim

Hi Tim, greeting from China, I like ur comment on watches, one of my favorate channel, expect this comparsion for a while, I own 15202 and 5990 , both have difference with this particular competition, my choice would be 15400 against 5711,both are positioned basic sport watch where ap shows more original to Genta's design, and i like the look much better in person. If it comes to chronograph then i prefer ch CH 28-520 over ap, thank u again and keep up with good work! br.

Hi Zhang, thank you for this kind response! Your 15202 and 5990 are spectacular watches, and you have superb taste in models. I am a huge fan of both watches. The 15400 is a wonderful watch, and it's even better due to the fairly large (4) range of dials offered compared to the steel Patek (2 dials). Best, Tim

Perhaps the only instance in which I would choice something other than a Patek. The AP Royal Oak is the original and the Nautilus is little more than an homage (aka "rip off".) It took me quite a number of years to warm up to the Royal Oak, but now, if I could go back in time to the late 70s or early 80s, one of the first things I'd do is buy a Royal Oak (or perhaps two).
@scottmackenzie62

AP better win, since the Royal Oak line is the only thing they have that most collectors want. Their other designs aren't nearly as coveted as just about everything else in the PP catalog.

The only reason to buy the Patek is if you get it new for about 30 000 USD. Then you can sell it used for 50 000 USD; buy the AP for around 20 000 USD and keep the money you started with, the 30 000 USD.

The Nautilus improves on the Royal Oak in every way, and is the winner here regardless of price difference. If the price of the Nautilus is prohibitive (which it should; it’s not worth more than half what it resells for, and is impossible to get at retail), the VC Overseas Gen. 3. The Overseas includes, and improves upon most, if not all, the Nautilus’ improvements over the Royal Oak (greater WR, better finish, etc). It can also be had for the same as the Royal Oak, making it my preferred choice.

While I prefer the look of the Patek (I've never been a huge Royal Oak fan), there is zero excuse for a watch at this price point with it's intended function to not have hackable seconds. That complication (if you can call something that even many sub $100 watches have a complication) should be standard on all their watches. That is if they can't manage the reset seconds feature that some A. Lange & Sohne watches have where the second hand returns to the 12 o'clock position when you pull out the crown to adjust the time. A luxury watch should feel luxurious and having to jump through hoops to do something as basic as synching the time just doesn't.

Great video Tim. I look forward to these every Sunday. Two questions came to mind based on your video. 1) Which is more important with regards to movement toughness: full balance bridge or free sprung balance? 2) How would you compare these two bracelets comfort and toughness to an X71? Thank you!
@the1916companywatchreviews
@the1916companywatchreviews 6 жыл бұрын
1) Full balance bridge; the mobile stud index is a risk to shift under shock. The bridge reduces the risk of damaging the balance staff whereas the free-sprung balance generally serves to avoid a timing change after a shock. 2) The X71 is comfortable but far more massive. The X71 has better wrist aeration qualities than these, but the Nautilus and AP bracelets offer silken comfort that only thinner and smaller links can provide. It's like President vs. Oyster bracelet. The X71 is more durable than either of these PP and AP bands, however. Best, Tim
@BenTramer
@BenTramer 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you , Tim! So the full balance bridge reduces the chances of the mobile stud index shifting and thus damaging the balance staff?
@the1916companywatchreviews
@the1916companywatchreviews 6 жыл бұрын
The balance bridge helps to attenuate the shock that would fracture the staff. The mobile index is something watchmakers move back and forth to change the rate of the watch: a free-sprung system does not have this mobile index, so there's no danger of a shock moving the timing regulator. Free-sprung doesn't have anything to do with saving the balance staff; it prevents a permanent timing change if the watch is shocked. Best, Tim
@BenTramer
@BenTramer 6 жыл бұрын
The free-sprung balance is about maintaining the accuracy of the movement under shock. The full balance bridge is about maintaining the structural integrity of movement (in this case the balance staff) under shock. I see why you ranked maintaining physical integrity (which a full balance bridge provides) ahead of the accuracy of the moovement (which the free-sprung balance maintains). Thank you, Tim.

It's a great choice, no doubt. I cannot fathom that anyone would be less than thrilled to receive the 15400. Which dial choice would you make? The four options that AP offers does give buyers more flexibility than Patek's binary silver/blue choice with the 5711/1A. Best, Tim
