PATEK PHILLIPPE | Choosing My First Super Luxury Wristwatch!

For those interested, Patek Philippe adopted the Calatrava cross as its logo in 1887 in imitation of their main competitor, Vacheron Constantin, which had earlier adopted the Maltese cross as its logo. Later, during the Great Depression the original Calatrava model 96 saved Patek from bankruptcy. This model had a Bauhaus design ethos and was, in my opinion, a masterpiece of restraint that appealed and mostly sold to the professional middle class of the time and also appeals very much to my own taste. The models here, although beautifully made, are a bit too bling for me but they all look very good on you Brendan.

The 5226g is epic. I've tried this and it's big brother with the annual calendar, travel time, moon phase. Both are gorgeous, and different to anything else in the catalogue. Hope you get one, or both. All the best with your hunt.

Don’t do it Brendan, don’t go down that rabbit hole. PP has raised prices by 50% during the last 7 years and they will continue to do so. I have three Calatravas, two older ones and the 5227J. Amazing watches but almost all dress watches you can save 20-30 percent on the grey market. If you want a sports model better to pay the premium now and not have to wait five years and during that time spending thousands of pounds over prices on the grey market. Just my two cents. Great videos, have watched them since you started.

Good choice, when do you plan to wear them? For me, it’s a classic dress watch, and as such, it would have to be gold or rose gold. Either of the last two would make me happy.

Hi Brendan great to see the starter watches from patek and good to see they let you film the watches in store. I can really appreciate the skill and quality from patek Philippe but for me as someone who has very big wrists their is not a lot of watches that would look right on my wrist. (I'd probably suit iwc because of size and don't where formal dress very often) But I am interested to know how the politics works when buying a watch with patek compared to Rolex? Great video : amazing watches ! First one is definitely a sports watch and looks like a Seiko Alpinist 😀 I assume PP got there first. Second one is the perfect dress watch ; absolutely faultless, a thing of beauty Number three the visual design is pared down to compensate for the yellow gold ? not sure whether hunter caseback is just a gimmick versus display caseback ? Number 4 is a stunner front and back , you'd never get tired of looking at that.

Nice video. I’ve been intrigued by Patek watches for awhile and knew they were expensive. Walked into an AD last week to check them out. Walked away feeling depressed cos couldn’t afford any of them. Dream watch, Nautilus 5711. Not a fan of the blingy diamondy cluster bits on the Calatravas. Lovely dials though and cool thickness

Great video 👍 This was a really valuable comparison since you had these watches side by side and on the wrist. I’ve contemplated owning a Patek dress watch, they are works of art, but I’m rough on my watches and don’t attend a lot of formal events. I prefer a nicer sport/field watch that will get the most wrist time and a less expensive vintage dress watch for those special occasions. Thanks for this great video and good luck.

What a hard and lovely choice to make. I have a bigger 8 inch, wrist so not sure any of the 39mm Calatravas would look too small. If they didn’t I would be torn between the 39MM 6199G and 40mm 5226G. With your collection one of the yellow gold/ white dial ones may just balance the ones you have out nicely against your steel sport/ two tone yachtmaster models. For me if a 39mm did not do it, I might save a bit of money and go towards IWC 42mm Automatic in Black/ Yellow Gold. But if 39mm worked I would also look at the Rolex 1908 in Platinum as well. But then again Patek another notch up from Rolex/ IWC so can totally understand why any of these a draw. Anything from Lange and Sohne caught your eye?

I like watching these luxury watch shows, coz I can't understand why seemingly intelligent people want to spend fortunes on a watch, They are nice pieces , but why does anyone want a perfection piece, that does nothing to enhance time telling. I have a Bulova that is accurate to 10 seconds a year, better than any Rolex or Patek can do.

I visited AD in Amsterdam about one month ago to check the situation with the brand and whether it has any logic to attempt to become a new client without previous history with PP. I didn’t expect any warm welcome, but my visit appeared to be very positive with interesting conversation about the watches and order of 6119G. The sales manager made it clear that any new client may order (put himself on a waiting list) for Aquanaut or Nautilus after purchasing one or several dress watches. I was surprised of this directness. The same message I got in PPs Geneva boutique where the SA recommended to visit AD in the country of my residents. I’m not a fan of dress watches, but adding 6119G to the collection as an access to PPs SS models seems to be a reasonable step.

Currently, with a suit I wear SS Daytona 116 ref and 41 mm DJ blue dial with fluted bazel. 6119G should be a very nice addition to the above pieces. Should I buy dress watch from another brand. Except PP, the only dress watch I may consider is a VC Historiques.

@@IDKline umm, 42mm. Which is a large watch by many standards. When one considers that until recently (20 years ago!) 36-38 mm was about 'normal', a throw back from the 60's and 70's or so, and I own a few of them like my super rare Longines sold gold L.990 and L.990.1 (beautiful watches, supremely gorgeous, perfection actually). But they don't fit my wrist and are now more or less females watches. That's not to say that men cannot wear them, not at all. It's just that trends change. And as trends go, will change again. I collect and love watches. My mum wore the L990. She loved it. And it looked great on her. It's a wonderful collector piece for so many reasons ... when you know, you know!
