Yes, the rubato creates more movement but not much to rovine the tempo

This is really incredible! I’ve been attempting to play this piece for about 5 years, and by watching this video it’s just solved all my issues with the rhythm, which has always been a difficulty for me. I can play mov.2 but always been scared to really attempt to break mov.1 down - so thanks so much for your brilliant guide!

Ooooh at 10:10 when you show to switch to the left hand is really useful to me. I used to play this song really well so watching this tutorial is super helpful to refresh and teach me new things I did not consider when I used to be pretty good at this song. Doing it all with the right hand used to stress me out so much haha, when I would play it at a high tempo it was either hit or miss. Now... I guess I'll never miss!!

It's funny cos I have always had the left hand pick up those notes, but always found it hard to get then to flow nice, ie, you could tell I let the left hand stay there for those notes. Revisiting this piece years later, and now I'm trying to not let the left hand stay there for those few notes. Easy slow but playing at speed and I go back to old habits lol

I think the early pianos Beethoven played had a brighter sound. The fact you keep trying to compensate for a duller sound, by holding more notes down, both shows that you are well aware of the spirit of this piece, and that the tone of the modern piano really could be better... Chopin said the Tempo is the soul of music, and Beethoven reportedly was metronome-steady. Very good advice you give.

Thanks for sharing this tutorial!! I have a little doubt, about the first chord. The tempo should be counted 1, 2, 3, 4 or 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2 and a half? Thank you!

Personally, I find this style robotic. It can sound serious and dark while still having some feel in it. I never play these pieces perfectly in time for this reason.

No composer, however 'strict' wouldn't want to hear a disingaged, mechanic interpretation like the one here. See professional pianists (Fischer, Barenboim, Schnabel, Richter and so many other) play this in time, but with microrubato and dinamics. And meaning! This is a misinterpreation of the classical period rigour by an amateur!

Kinda funny reading these comments. My son has played in scholastic competitions for ten years and Beethoven is a classical composer so solid tempos are expected with a very minimum of rubato. To read some of the comments here it would be interesting to hear their interpretations . He is properly teaching this piece. Beethoven is not Chopin.

I dont understand why so many mainstream performances play the notes of the first 3 measures legato when they shoudn't. Thanks for communicating that for others. This way it is way more dramatic.

as a tempo, 'grave' is defined as 25-45 bpm, not 54 or 63.
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 5 жыл бұрын
25 per large beat is the same as 50 the same speed but sub-divided. For example, if a half note is played at 25 bpm then the quarter note is 50 bpm. Therefore, 54 bpm is the same as 27 bpm.

@@BachScholar I see what you mean, but it still sounds too fast when you play it (compared to the other renditions I've heard). Guess it's down to personal preference🤷‍♂️.
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 5 жыл бұрын
It's always about personal preference. You can always view it both ways. Why is it necessarily that I play "fast" compared to others? It could also be that all others are slow compared to mine. There is no such thing as one correct tempo for everyone, just as there is no such thing as one food everyone loves. But that range you give, 25-45, is a very large range which is just an arbitrary range of numbers. Numbers are not music. Numbers are numbers. Where did that range come from, anyway?
@philipmartin9652
@philipmartin9652 5 жыл бұрын
@@BachScholar Your interpretation of 'grave' is the quickest I've heard per crotchet, which is why I viewed it as I did - but that's not to say that it's wrong. The given range came from Wikipedia, and feels right to me when I play this piece, as well as being consistent with the likes of Barenboim's performances, but even there the values are given as a rough approximation: of course it's arbitrary.
@BachScholar
@BachScholar 5 жыл бұрын
My crotchet speed I demonstrate here is about 31.5 (since the quaver speed is 63). This is right within the range you give. So then, what is the problem?
