I have used the base with charcoal, twigs and hot coals from a bigger fire. Base is stainless steel it only looses it shine.

very nice re-issue of the Swedish army classic, I looked so long to get a stainless steel version... but now I feel I do not want to carry that much weight any more, and considering volume and weight I might as well take the Trangia 27 which is far better for cooking and more versatile... so I guess my romance with the Swedish army kit is over, but I stick with Trangia + Ti cups/or the original HA27 kit (my standard equipment + Firebox Nano stove)

Stainless is heavy, I think the big sell is that the M40 can be used in a campfire. The Trangia storm cookers are great, I also have a 27. 🙂

Good video. Definitely has flexibility. Would be interested to see different fuel options including wood/charcoal. Liking this channel.

The only real thing that I like about the Swedish over my Esbit 5-piece kit is the double-boiler option. I do wish my Esbit lid could be flipped over to use as a secondary pan.

it would be good if it had a perforated steaming tray to put on top, you could use the hot steam from the boiling water to steam cook veggies or even fish

Yes and a lid. I tried to make a lid from a Dollar store cookie sheet but It didn't turn out very well, my metal working skills and tools are lacking. If someone had the skills and tools there might be enough of a market to sell on Etsy.

@@planetsideagent absolutely agree, I wonder if pathfinder have a Feedback area on their website where you could forward the idea ?

If you make that lid how about a plate for solid fuel tablets as well? Great video and review.

I'd think an upturned aluminum cat food can would make a good solid fuel tray, easy and cheap.

I wonder how well this system would work with sticks and twigs instead of an alcohol burner.

Being originally designed for the Military, I do not think so. However, being Stainless Steel, I presume that one could rig up a twig fire in the base.

Turn the stove part upside down over coals, then feed twigs to maintain a long cook.

@@thomasmusso1147 if guys are using a 2 qt bushpot with a twig base stove. it should work pretty well. i've been thinking of picking 1 of those up. idk how many titanium cook pots i have, but 2 quarts just seems to be the perfect size.

👍👍👍 .. nice 😊. Good review. It looks to be a viable alternative to the original Swedish Kit. That Double Boiler setup has a lot of potential. Fit .. nothing a bit of minor 'tweaking' with a set of pliars won't fix. Being Stainless Steel, unless abused, it should last a lifetime. I like SS .. I'm long past 'ultralight / how far and fast can one go with the minimum load, etc 😏. Anything with distance .. I use public transport to the closest drop-off point and then walk from there. Heavy loads .. I use a Shopping Trolley .. our forests here in Switzerland are well 'Infrastructured' and maintained, so pulling a trolley / cart along is easy peas. Am looking forward to more on this kit please .. cook ups and a comparison with the Swedish Original. Until then .. take care ..

Is the stove base supposed to be a twig stove also?

I've heard that it can but I've never seen a video of one being used that way.

Its a good bit of kit , l have one myself but more often than not do not use it , its just far to heavy for what it actually does , l can do everything and more with a cook kit less than half tge weight of this , if you don't mind the weight then perfect

Indeed. The whole kit is heavy and defiantly not for light weight camping/hiking. But being durable great for vehicle outings or short day hikes.

Never used this or any other kind of a mess kit. Never really understood the attraction. Been watching a few videos trying to understand why people are drawn to it but so far no luck. It seems rather wobbly. I'd expect the bottom part to be more stable. My issue with it is that it's huge. There are far better options out there for an effective system for the trangia with a wind shield and all that weigh a fifth, take up a third of the space and are far less rattly and noisy. I do like that you have a main cooking pot and the lid which is also a frying pan can become a double boiler but honestly, you can buy things that do the same and take up less space and are less movey-abouty.

Some folks just like military type gear no difference than the ultra lite hikers who 'cold soak' their food. 🙂

The swedes made that kit in stainless and also identical in alluminium. Its a tried and proven design. I would not tamper with it. I also have the pathfinder version which is an identical copy.
