The best thing about the old style Ass Savers was that you could get them for free on bike paths after they fall off of other peoples' bikes, this one looks like it attaches a bit better!

I just ordered, without any hesitation, this Party Pace fender after viewing your video after you posted it. I like the graphics and I thought the minimalist concept was smart. I have the wonderful Topeke fender but it does take up seatpost room on one of my bikes but otherwise it's great. Thanks for the informed review.

The Win Wing reminds me of the "license plate fender hack" for old school Blackburn style (EX-1-ish) rear racks we used "back in the day". It turns out that a standard US license plate just covers the top of the rack. We would put the plate (usually found along side the road) on the rack throw a bungie cord over the top. It rattled like a MF on rough roads/trails, but it kept us from getting the "racing stripe" on wet roads and kept road spray off things on the rack. As a bonus it also kept any squishy gear on the rack from sagging into the wheel (not much fun to find your favorite jacket/sleeping bag/shirt has been rubbing on the tire for the last 20 miles). It was funny to see that thought incorporated into the "Mountain" rack years later.

This video makes me think about this upcoming winter. Would you ever do a video talking about how to protect your bike from salt damage, or what winter maintenance or modifications you like to see for winter bikes? Maybe studded tires, fenders, whatnot.

The key point about coverage, and why the last one isn't bad compared to the others, is water comes off the wheel at a tangent, so the water hitting your ass is coming off the back of the wheel at about 10 o'clock. The missing front part of it is only protecting the middle of the seatpost and below. With that in mind I'd suggest that angling them up a bit more could give you fractionally better coverage. This is also why, for transportation riding, full-length fenders with flaps are important. The little "normal" length ones where the front ends at 9 o'clock are stupid, because you miss the key protection for your feet and chaingear. The front should go to 7:30 or 8 o'clock and have a flap on and that can keep you very dry. Especially welcome commuting home after a rain shower.

Thanks for the video. I like the design of the Win Wing. I’ve had good results from Mudhugger’s rear gravel hugger fender and their front gravel fender. I cut some velcro straps, and use those instead of zip ties to attach. Can switch easily between my 27.5” and 700c gravel bikes.

Definitely a bit more involved, and costs more, but the SKS Speedrocker fenders are a more complete fenderset, front and rear. Initial setup is a bit finicky, but after that I can put them on in ~30 seconds. Proven themselves for me in rain and some ugly mud rides.

I have used clip-on fenders on some bikes, but it’s always been a matching front and rear set. I don’t really see how a rear fender alone would keep you dry. The front wheel spray is hitting you full on this way

I did this with some plastic sheet liner that came with some wire shelves that I didn't use. Then zip tied it on the under side of my racks via some wholes made with a paper hole punch. Gave it little 1" flappy sides so panniers and stuff can still be used. Guess you can say I made Fenrackders™.

I know you already foretold about the comments in the video, but anyway: There is just no substitute for full-length fenders that will keep you and your drivetrain acceptably not-soaked. The idea about fenders being not pretty somehow comes from racing, where the aero-penalty is significant enough, and where riders are put in pain and danger anyway (just think how often pro cyklists crash - compared to how often you as a non-pro cyclist would accept crashing!) (Full length) fenders are a blessing for non-professional riding and do not deserve the disrespect that many people put on them.

Rookie mistake: Most semi-straight fenders need to be angled up into the air more than you are showing. They should not be horizontal, as it reduces coverage on both ends of the fender. For best coverage the nose should be as close to the tire as you can.

The problem for me with most of those is that they just look crappy and destroy the overall look of the bike. And if talking fenders, then what about the front one? Or is it just important to keep the ass dry and nevermind the messy wet shoes? I've experimented with a bunch of clip on variants on my previous bike, but in the end gave up and went with proper fenders (or at least an option for installing proper ones) as one of the main parameters when choosing my new bike. Never going back to the clip on variety personally.

Every rear rack is a fender
@Nicoya2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I really understand the value of a rear-only clip-on fender. You're still getting your legs wet from the spray off both the front and rear wheel, and more importantly you're still getting mucky road slime being flung up into your face from the front wheel. I feel like the bare minimum coverage I'd want from a fender would be, like, 6-8 inches near the fork crown, positioned just to keep the... not rooster tail, I guess rooster comb? of water out of my face. Like forget about my butt, it can get as wet as it likes.
@PathLessPedaledTV2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t use it on a winter commuter but a trail or gravel bike where there are intermittent puddles but no rain it’s perfect.

I don't get one thing... why would anyone wand a clip-on fenders on a gravel bike? What's wrong with full, wraparound ones? They have superior coverage, superior way of attaching and in my opinion superior looks. The only scenario when they can cause problems is when going through some serious, sticky mud. And gravel bikes are not meant to be ridden there anyway. For every other scenario clip-ons are just an utter garbage!

@wjcferguson2 жыл бұрын
@@jochenkraus7016 Yeah, while I prefer the likes of VO Zeppelin that IMO do an even better job, full length fenders with flaps are truly effective, and more than incrementally more effective than 'normal' length. They keep not only water, but most importantly *filth* off you. And I've had many comfortable dry commutes after a rain shower when a lot of my fellow commuters are having dirty water sprayed up their bum crack and over their feet. Now, I'm not kink-shaming, if that's your thing, but I prefer to avoid it.

I understand the practicality of these fenders, but boy are they ugly! It makes one wonder if it’s even possible to make a clip on fender that’s functional but also doesn’t detract so much from the aesthetics of the bike. Perhaps not…
