Amazing conversation. ~15y ago I started telling all three of my kids that I would pay for their undergrad educations at any public institution they could get into, no strings, and then I would pay for a graduate degree but only from one institution - Harvard. I'm in the financial services industry, and I've seen over and over what a Harvard degree means, and the doors it opens. About 2 years ago my sentiment began to change, and now I've done a full 180. A Harvard degree has lost all of its luster and power. Now when I see "graduated from Harvard", I have to look and see "when". Because if it was after about 2018... it's a vacuous piece of paper. No guarantee they can get into Harvard graduate school even if academically and intellectually qualified. Have you ever considered fighting back against the Ivy League monopoly? To some extent, the Ivy League monopoly is a monopoly on the entry level in certain careers and with certain employers. It is difficult to argue the vast generalities which seem to govern the lifetime arcs of huge swaths of people. When you reduce it to the simplicity of the entry level and maybe advancement to the next level, now you can have a coherent debate.

When in boarding school in Kenya '52 to '57, where in form 4 and form 6 (high school in the USA), we had the exams sent to the school in sealed packages from Cambridge University, that were opened only to be given to the students at the start of each exam. There was given a time for each subject, and when the bell went, the student had to put his paper into the envelope and sealed, whether he had completed it or not. All these were sent back to Cambridge and checked by examiners who had no clue to who the student was, other than in his name. Certainly a democratic way of verifying correctly.

For example, the current political class in the US tells me that they are "Supporting democracy" in Ukraine, by funding a government they engineered with a violent coup, which took over the country and has since banned opposition language, news, media, and political parties. they call it democratic to support a regime that disallows other political parties from trying to run for election. pretty ironic.

It just seemed like the biggest pissing content to see who was the most unique or oppressed. If only they could see what went on in the Middle East back then. What happened to my buddies. However, I’m glad I went with my gut. I decided that I did not belong there. I went to a smaller college in my hometown. Jordan/Victor - so excellent to watch you both in a discussion together. Of all the difficulties presented by online technology the ability for a 49 year old high school non-graduate to access lectures from Harvard, Stanford and more importantly Hillsdale professors is wonderful. KZbin university is important, thank you. One thing to note Jordan, in your important critique of the college schools of education and their monopoly - those massive state budgets employ an overwhelming number of American voters and their government employee union is one of the most powerful in the world. Politicians on both sides of the political spectrum avoid discussing K-12 education if they value election. The current education system has already been taken by the marxists. And it seems, so have the government institutions. They are so large they monopolize the vote. It’s the best move they ever made. Government employee unions and state educational control. It’s a winning strategy. We have one hell of an uphill battle to save this great experiment.

We called you useful idiots. Are you completely dumb or what?! Lenin said - they themselves will sell us a rope on which we will hang them! You are playing with leftists in words and terms, and they are playing on your life and the life of your children! You are arguing with the left about words, about terms. And the Lefts are opportunists (read Lenin!!!). words, slogans - it's just a tool. Tomorrow they will easily change them. They care about the goal! If today the military is not suppressed by them, they will be against the military. When they tame x, they will glorify them. Is it hard to understand?! Believe me, I know their strategy. You must be pleased to console your mind by exposing the hypocrisy of the left, but if you fail to organize resistance, you will think about it further in the concentration camps. And stop saying that this is a bunch of leftist professors and freaks who have intimidated corporations, governments, all business and all states! Everything is quite the opposite! If you are not idiots, you should understand. Explore it! Find the essence. Develop a resistance strategy! Although my prediction is that you will lose because you sit on the sidelines and chat about what is happening?! And write it down in your notebook. Instead of acting, or at least thinking about how to resist. I thought the West was immune to Marxism, but it turns out not. Save us, God!

Former professor of biochemistry here. Left when I had to be more of a lawyer than a teacher or even researcher. My opinion is that our current university system cannot be redeemed and should be destroyed. The degrees conferred (even in my field) no longer certify that a graduating student has the knowledge or skills that the degree says they do. It isn't even close, anymore. Students could get degrees based upon their family's social connection, and could be excused for almost anything if they were well enough connected. Better to learn the skills on the job itself.

College and trade schools tell their students that they will make big money yet the things such as character are never talked about. College isn't for everyone, I try to hire young HS graduates to go into the simple field of sign type installations, after several years of training, its possible to earn up to $100K or more. They either quit after a year, not willing to go through the apprentice period or because a factory gives them $.25 mor per hour to which they won"t ever advance at. ALL of my colleagues were counting the semesters to "walk away" day. I think the top 10% of the students will be fine. What I see is the bottom 10% has expanded to about 20% or even 25% and the middle students have declined on average. They seem to be happy with mediocre. Maybe that is due to the no child left behind standard in public education? Anyway, it is too complex to fix now. After 30 years in the field, I see no hope for the system. Education has become a commodity where food grade a b and c are mingled in the market place of labor. Currently, I would wager at least a 1/3 of college students would not have been admitted 50 years ago.

My jaw was dropping as I listened to Victor Davis Hanson describe what is going on in the American universities and other institutions, including the military. We have very similar problems here in the UK. I think the seeds were sown back in the 1960s, as Dr Peterson was saying, and we have certainly seen a dumbing down of education in the last few decades. So today's youngsters are being taught by people who are themselves poorly educated and lacking in critical thinking. The result is then a dangerous drop in standards across the board. All institutions have been politicised, even healthcare. I wish I could understand the psyche of these radical left wingers with their Marxist divide-and-rule agenda. Why do they hate western civilisation so much ? What do they want to replace it with ? Are they all mentally ill ? Is it a sort of mass psychosis ? That's what it feels like these days. Thank heavens for voices like those of Dr Peterson and Victor Davis Hanson. Voices of sanity amidst the collective insanity.

I believe they’ve been propagandize (effectively brainwashed) into the ideology, as they are militant about it, can’t calmly or rationally debate or explain it and most are unwilling to hear alternative viewpoints or accept that others see things differently. They tend to lash out, name call and drop friendships with those who disagree. They seem like cultists. A relatively small group of very powerful elites (WEF, CFR and other similar overlapping organizations) are behind it, using these propagandists to control everyone as they continue implementation of their one world government agenda. They’ve been open about it but the media (under their control) simply never brought it to the public’s attention.

I definitely think calling Marxism in it various forms a cult is pretty apt. It’s gotten stranger over the years because when Russia went Marxist, it was a bit of an experiment vs all these other terrible forms of government in Russia. But now a century later we have so many data points that no matter how much lip service you give to helping the less well off, that Marxist policies make everyone worse off. I suspect that there are some legit bad actors using Marxism as a tool just to direct chaotic forces. Blackrock would be public enemy # 1 to marxists except it’s been able to form some symbiosis. The so-called Greek history that Hanson is refencing is largely myth and legend put forth by Western European government propagandist. People like Pythagoras and Solan probably never really existed and are composite mythical figures....like Jesus Christ or Thor. The ancient Greeks by in large never really embraced democracy. The period of democracy in what is now called Greece lasted less than 90 years, and only really took place in a small portion (Athens) of the Hellenistic world. Most of Greek history is filled will tyrants, slavetraders, pirates and dictators. In reality, the framework of the US government came from the Iroquios Confederacy and their constitution which was called "The Great Laws of Peace". The founding fathers even copied the Iroquios' national symbol, the Bald Eagle.
@tonyducks1121 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasreaves588 The Iroquois Confederacy and their "Great Laws of Peace" weren't the foundation nor the inspiration for the United States Constitution. Only one woke "historian" named David Grinde has ever made that ridiculous claim. Falsely and intentionally using Ben Franklin and other Founding Fathers names to shamelessly spread his historical BS aka propaganda . And Grinde made all his specific nonsensical claims without even one single shred of corroborating historical evidence to back it up.. Not even one single historical citation or shred of corroborating evidence. Not one. That's not how honest and duly recorded history works if you're on the level. Exactly why Grinde's ridiculous claim is completely disputed and ignored by every legit professional career historian in academia. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence to back them up. David Grinde literally pulled that crap straight from his colon, and right up through his loose fisted rectum. Because a grifter like Grinde knows most people are extremely gullible like you, and will believe anything and everything without any credible evidence aka historical citations. No matter how irrational and idiotic it may sound. Grinde's woke historical wet dream is purely a figment of Grinde's vivid imagination, or perhaps one of Grinde's PCP induced hallucinations. Same exact thing with your historically erroneous claim that the American bald eagle as national symbol was somehow copied from the Iroquois Confederacy, and only then subsequently adopted by our Founding Fathers as our Nation's power animal.. When once again there is absolutely no historical evidence to back that stupid nonsensical claim up. In fact "on the contrary" would be an understatement. Because throughout the entire West the eagle has been a sign of dominance and strength since ancient times. In fact Roman legions even used the highly venerated eagle for their standard legionnaire battle symbol. Furthermore there is also indisputable recorded historical evidence regarding our Founding Fathers's selection origin, and symbolism regarding the American bald eagle. Plus it's subsequent adoption by the United States of America as our official national symbol. Pennsylvania lawyer William Barton and Secretary of Congress Charles Thomson are both fully responsible for the American bald eagle being adopted as our national symbol. With Secretary Charles Thomson getting the lion's share of credit on that particular one. NOT the Iroquois Confederacy. In fact the Iroquois Confederacy never even had the American bald eagle as their Confederacy symbol, or power animal. However some members of the Iroquois Confederacy used an unamed/unspecified eagle for their tribal symbol. But the Natives unspecified eagle mascot had completely different spiritual meaning and symbolism. With completely different symbolism and connotations than our America's bald eagle. For Natives the random unspecified eagle some of them adopted was about clairvoyance against future mishaps, and protection of their spirits, and the spirits of their ancestors from evil. But the Iroquois's number one defining tribal symbol was never an eagle or any other animal for that matter. For the Iroquois Confederacy their #1 symbol was always the eastern white pine tree aka "Tree of Peace". Have you ever once read the Iroquois Confederacy with specific regards to their 22 most established national tenets?? It is completely foreign, and reads absolutely NOTHING like our US Constitution. Only a complete moron or shameless propagandist would make a connection between the Iroquois's "Great Law" tenant narratives, and United States Constitution or our constitutional republic. It's literally like comparing night with day. Their is no legit basis for any comparison. Do yourself a favor. Stop LARPing as a disgraced historian like Grinde, and spreading his propaganda on KZbin. Who knows maybe you are him derp derp.

I can see why I relate so much to mr Davis’ points, as I had several professors like him in college. I was blessed to go to the Air Force Academy, where the focus is almost completely centrist (maybe even a bit right of center. I was an econ major and my profs in that were very conservative, at least economically.) They dont try to brainwash you there (as far as education and politics are concerned) and since there is no tuition ie profit for the academy to target, they focus on producing educated, responsible citizens/airmen. I see that Davis himself taught at the naval academy, and im sure they were fortunate to have him.

I've been listening to Victor Hanson for at least 5 years. His talk on Putin and the US at that time had an average amount of views to present, millions of views! I keep reviewing it because its rich in content from the past to relevant now! His take allowed me to understand how it all happened and seems most probable. In short he can speak in such a way gives a non scholar like me a 10K foot view of the bigger picture. I'm subbed to the Hoover Institute as well..Thank you for having him on! God speed!🕊⚘

Ensure you check his racist narrative with actual facts and figures....percentage wise i want you to prove to me that there has been such a leap in the admission in Black American students to these Ivy League establishments, show me video footage of lecture theatres at these Ivy Leage Colleges where there is more than a smattering of black faces....we should be witnessing a clear change in the numbers of black faces that we see walking around these campuses....prove it...show it...otherwise this guy is just another racist teacher that has such strong racial biases that black students have suffered under his hatred for generations....

As a retired psychologist who also served as a second-class, adjunct professor at 2 institutios across my 40-years, I recognized the veracity of the observations and opinions of Drs. Peterson and Hansen on the devolution of higher-education in America. I share their unspoken sadness and alarm! I am grateful for the rigorous doctoral education I received at Purdue University. I wonder if standards and rigor still exist in some institutions in America?

Thank you for sharing insights into your professional development, and your growing uncertainty that educational goals have remained the core focus of tertiary education. If you have further observations or critical questions, please feel free to share them. I've walked a similar road... though a lower road. It helps to see parallels, in order to understand how manipulative the system has become. Perhaps awareness is a useful point to arrive at. At least that.

At 82 l cannot get enough of content like this. I confess to keeping my dictionary handy but these two men challenge and educate in a way that I could never have imagined. I was severely dyslexic as a child and embarrassed by my inability to read well. I still do not read for pleasure but get lost in time hearing great dialogue and music. JBP’s series on Exodus is superb . I thought I was familiar enough with that book but I watched most episodes multiple times. A BIG THANK YOU for your sharing your wealth of knowledge.

I'm an elementary teacher in Ottawa. I have noticed over the past 10 years there has been a slow progressive disintegration of educational values. They have been traded in for woke ideology with a focus on "feelings, victimhood, and a twisted perspective on diversity and equity". The new (or 'redefined') terms, such as "antiracism" sound like we should all agree on this concept but when you study the materials promoting this concept, it is actually the inverse! It isn't 'against' racism -- as one would think -- but only redirects a different type of racism that promotes 'anti-white". ~ Also, "inclusion" which used to refer to simply including a minority group into the general conversation, but now appears to mean that the 'minority' should have a more valuable "voice" in our society than the majority. It is a sad disintegration of basic values in our society and I pray for the future of our children.

I would recommend Hillsdale College free online courses. Victor Davis Hanson himself has posted courses on Spartan history, World War II from a military perspective, and also a course on citizenship closely related to the book under discussion here with Jordan Peterson. The range of other courses offered is astonishing. A friend and I are currently studying the course on Aristotle's Ethics, and then plan to do the introduction to the Constitution course and the Constitution 101 course (which goes more in depth than the intro). We know that the Aristotle is a perfect foundation for the Constitution ones. In fact, I think that if every citizen would just take the intro (which is very short and easy to get through) and the 101, the situation in the country would improve substantially. There are many great courses in various fields. But two important and well-done ones related to these matters also stand out, the one on the history of American Civil Rights and the very recent one called "The Real American Founding." Although I am doing the courses I mentioned at present with a friend, I am actually repeating them. I have finished all of Hillsdale's online courses on my own, some of them more than once, over the past two years. So, I do know what they are like from direct experience. 2 or 3 of them (children's lit for instance) disappointed me a little bit. But the vast majority are excellent, and the ones specifically on American History and politics are outstanding. I myself was an autodidact like you, who eventually worked very hard over many years, to become a college professor. (And, no, I did NOT indoctrinate. In fact, I became a Jordan Peterson fan largely because my approaches to literature have a lot in common with his. Hope this helps you find a logical progression for what you read and study, based on your interest in the conversation between these two amazing, and honest, intellectuals. Best wishes.

This conversation is thrilling. When I was in graduate school in 1971 (pursuing my masters in English literature) I met a very smart and amusing woman from the Ed School who was taking elective classes in the graduate English department. She was getting a teaching degree in memory of her brother, a teacher who had been killed in the Viet Nam war. She told me that her classes in the Ed School were idiotic and everyone got an A or a B. I told my mother who also had an advanced degree and was the daughter of a college president. Mom told me that the Ed School was an intellectual embarrassment even in her day (she was class if 1933). I asked why people don’t know this? Even today with Dr. Jill Biden (who says that without laughing?) the general public seem to be impressed with that degree. It’s a flim flam.

@@denisek4392, I'm an education major and I agree that education is a comparatively easy course of study. However, I never had anything as easy as the examples you mention. All the exams I had to take were essay questions....at least you did have to understand sentence structure, have a decent vocabulary, and have some original ideas. However, this was many years ago when a college education was an actual meaningful thing. With affirmative action, all that changed, and now a college education means nothing unless it's in a STEM field. Affirmative action teachers don't know anything about anything and they teach that same nothing to affirmative action students.
