I really like this form. I have been researching and practicing Okinawan Kobudo. I have one nunchuck form, and am starting a bo staff form. I am in a formal Shaolin Kempo school, and one thing I have noticed is that what Chinese arts call "basic" and what Okinawan arts call "basic" are two very different things... lol Chinese basic is like Okinawan advanced techniques haha

very pretty and well choreographed. Forms are a wonderful way to impress those who don't or can't. This shows his dedication to learning this form. It is beautiful and skillful, no doubt. But a demo. of his ability it is not. Doing this is simple compared to attempting something like this against a true opponent who desires to harm you. And it is not a stick it is a Staff.

That is true, though i recently found that Bodhidharma, who introduced Buddhism to China, greatly urged the advancement of the chinese martial arts into the early shaolin kung fu :) It's heritage is beautifully mixed and it would probably be very different without the interaction between India and China. We've both countries to thank for this elegant art :)

An Indian prince (or monk) named Bodhidharma went to China. The Chinese didn't really like him that much but he noticed that mongols often raided the Chinese towns and villages. They didnt want his help so he took shelter and medidated in a cave behind the Shaolin temple for 9 years. The Shaolin guarded the cave and meditated with him. They started to get unhealthy because they were sitting for a long period of time. So Bodhidharma taught them excersises to keep them healthy and self defense.

@jauser its a long story but basically he grew up in the temple but when he turned 18 he wanted to leave. he left the temple and couldnt find any work because he had no real qualifications so he ended up taking a job in one of the local wushu schools out side the temple. so now that he doesnt have to shave his head he doesnt. im thinking next year i might do a short youtube video about his life and what he thought about temple life as a yougster.

@Scotc
@Scotc 10 жыл бұрын
The staff is a Shaolin Long Staff. I think in Japan it is called a bo, but in China called a gun (hence the name of the form Yin Shou Gun). The staff is a practice and demonstration staff usually made of wax wood, which is very flexible, lightweight, and does not break easily when hitting the ground. I think the combat staffs used historically would have been made of a harder wood and would have been much heavier and not flexible.

There is no doubt that Kungfu, Wushu, Karate etc are powerful martial arts. Also there is no doubt that Chinese & Japanese contributed a lot for these arts. But some styles of these martial arts knowledge was adopted from ancient Indian arts only. When Indians speak these are Indian arts, they never mean, these arts are completely Indian arts but rather they want to spread the word to world that India also did contribute in these arts. Silambham is one such art that is similar to this video art.
