Patient’s Successful Treatment of Ewing Sarcoma | Dr Nishith Gupta Pravenchandra

Patient Ranjit Sarkar, 40, from Bangladesh, consulted Dr Nishith Gupta Pravenchandra, Consultant, Musculoskeletal Oncology at Narayana Hospital, Howrah, for Ewing sarcoma in the left femur.
Ewing Sarcoma is a form of cancer. Upon diagnosis, we found that the Ewing sarcoma had extensively spread throughout the left femur and surrounding muscles. Additionally, one of the blood vessels was closely intertwined with the femur. We informed the patient about the condition and outlined the treatment plan, starting with chemotherapy. We initiated the treatment with the patient's consent, which progressed successfully. After completing nine sessions of chemotherapy and observing positive results, we decided to proceed with surgery.
Before the surgery, an MRI revealed a reduction in tumour size, but the blood vessel remained entwined with the tumour. Despite this challenge, we successfully performed the surgery, completely removing the femur bone and replacing it with a synthetic metal implant. The procedure was successful, and the patient began walking slowly after a couple of days. We wish him a speedy recovery and strength.
