Hey Folks, Well the day has final come to put aside all the sandpaper and spray paint the Area 51 Project. I.e.: the 1951 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe Chopped and Dropped Kustom.
I deliberated over what to do for paint on this project for a long time, Ultimately, I kept coming back to putting on a patina finish. I haven't done a large scale or full car in Patina before, just a few smaller projects over the years, so let's just say I am experimenting with my techniques a little bit as I go therefore this isn't really a how to paint patina video but more of a this how I'm painting my car type video. No Rattlecans or spraycans were used in my process.
I know there is a lot of opinions about this style of paint job in the car scene and the wider internet and to be honest it did sway my decision back and forth as to how I was going to finish this lead sled.
But, in the end I had to go with what I had wanted all along and that is a finish that is meant to mimic a sun faded but not completely rusty blown out car, that has spent many moons sitting in a dry climate fading but not so much rusting big holes in the shell. If ya know what I'm sayin?
Some also might ask why I put so much time into straightening out the body work to then put a patina finish on the 51.
Well, first up, an aged patina look I have wanted throughout the build process of this car.
Secondly, the chrome and trim that I have for the 51 are only about 5-6 out of 10 and while I do love really good chrome and I could send it away to be repaired and re-chromed, at this point the costs are just too high for me to consider, even if I did have 10/10 chrome and trim, I'd still rather have a patina finish on the car.
Thirdly, I really like patina cars.........and shiny cars are stressful.....
Forthly, It is only paint and the body is now straight enough that If I decided I want to change it, the really hard work is already done, sand it back, mask it off, blow it over.
There may be more to come on this paint job yet. But that is still to be decided..... Stay Tuned
