I think Vico honed in on what makes Wangan racing one of the most impressive automotive feats in recent history. It wasn't just cars that could touch 200mph, they could maintain that speed for 30+ minutes and then drive comfortably to a job or business meeting. All while utilizing 1990s era technology! And let's not forget that many of the best JDM tuners were inspired by the German cars and German tuners. Even Nakai San of RWB started on Toyotas, but now builds Porsches (and Mercedes, he dailys an R129). Also, while on the topic of JDM Mercedes tuners, don't forget Auto Fashion Factory Spirit!

Great documentary episode guys, kinda miss the daily vlog style bit this is more professionally presented. I couldn't agree more, I own 2 JDM AMGs and both have the options where the speed limiter is raised and one of my car has the similar digital radar display (supercat). What I like about JDM AMG is they often has all of the optional specs & features available and normally the car is in pristine condition compared to EU AMG (used vs. Used). Mine comes with Volk Racing wheels which makes it even more JDM 😁

Great video, amazing edit and that AMG is a incredible unit but a couple of clarification about bosozoku. They were never about racing nor had any interest in enhancing the performance of their bikes. It was a street gang which acted as an entry way to yakuza. Also nowadays they're basically gone, there are guys who modify their bikes in that style but the whole gang thing is long gone. Anyways great video!

excellent video. Love the c140 mercedes. Even stock, these have presence, but in AMG form, menacing. Nice historic footage of classic Japanese street racing. really miss the 90s. I was very into this scene back in the mid 90s and tried to procure as many japanese car racing videos on vhs tapes from Japan as I could. A friend had a way to order various videos from Japan. This was the birth of the tuner scene before all the ridiculous nonsense with fast and furious here in the US (was not really a fan of the first ones as I think they really made the scene look kind of silly with all the flashiness and gaudiness and the silly dialogue and language). Early tuner Japanese (and Euro) compacts in the 90s were not like that. The tuner scene started gaining popularity in the US in the 90s (Southern California) and much earlier in Japan but it was still early enough that the tuner scene was still sort of new and exotic. Seeing a modified Japanese or European compact car on the street was still rare and grabbed attention, with people looking on with curiosity as to what they were looking at, with maybe some scoffing from American muscle-car fans who thought it was pointless for a compact Japanese box with a comparably tiny engine to even be tinkered with (of course, a well-modified Japanese compact was found to be more than capable of matching or even beating an American v8 in a straight line depending on the v8's level of tune, and they could handle around corners unlike those earlier American cars. The scene was more focused on improving performance (even though cars got much faster later on when the technology and tuning improved as well as after much knowledge was gained through racing in these early years) and aggressive yet clean and relatively subtle exterior styling was the order of the day (just look at the old footage in the video above and that gives you an idea of how the cars looked; moderately lowered suspension, nice lightweight high-quality wheels or stock wheels with high-performance tires, maybe front and rear spoilers or subtle body kit, and some small sponsor decals arranged in a column down the front fenders or hood, more aggressive but not loud freeer-flowing exhaust system with stainless steel muffler and tips for the purpose of improving flow and not just to be stupid loud; and that's it. the rest of the mods were underneath such as engine, suspension, brakes, tires). Car tuners lusted after Japanese performance parts for their US spec Japanese cars and these were high-quality parts (unlike post-fast and furious when you could get a cheap and crappy fart can from pep boys for your beat-up and poorly-modded Japanese box). Later on, though, after the video game Gran Turismo and sport compact car magazines, the scene got more popular. Unfortunately after fast and furious though, it turned into something else entirely. But back to the mercedes c140. One of the best if not the best chassis ever made by Mercedes. As Vico mentioned, the coupes were the more special and exclusive of the 140 chassis all of the best that Mercedes had to offer at the time went into the S class coupes. The AMG V12s with the increased displacement were so rare and this widebody takes the c140 to the stratosphere in terms of exclusivity. A proper yakuza mobile. Nice informative video.
