Two Versions of TOKI Were Featured as "Video Challenge" Games on NICK ARCADE... The NES Version in Season 1, and the Sega Genesis Version in Season 2

I didn't hear "happy little games" (in human), but what makes me happy is seeing another of your videos. Many creators have more technical wizardry or flash, but you put a smile on my face. You are great example of both the human spirit and terrible jokes. And you bowl better than I ever could. (True story: When I was a kid I was in a summer bowling league, but I was so bad the moved me down an age bracket). Toki is a great example of the last really magical age of video games. In the post-crash years there was a wide variety of arcade focused experiences which were not all cookie cutter. For these years, even though they shared a quarter eating desire, there a lot of different games like Toki being made. I think the Midway games and Atari games are some of the best examples from this time. It was inevitable that this would end when the arcade hardware was not much (or at all) better than the home hardware, and as people desired gameplay that didn't require eating quarters to make sense. As this gap decreased, arcades found their hits with social games that people would play while out with others(Fighters and Beat'em ups) and/or experiences you couldn't get at home (racing cockpits, guns, golf clubs).

The one thing I always wondered about this game.... How powerful was Toki the Warrior prior to being turned into a firespitting monkey? We never get a scale of his original power level to decide whether what he got turned into was an upgrade or a downgrade not. I mean did he spit fire in his human form? I feel like they should made his original form as unlockable playable character in the remastered version to answer this question.

Truth be told; many home ports of older games coexisted with pre-existing arcade counterparts that had very few models made. Darius 1 and 2, E-Swat, and Gainground are all console ports that I have in some form. There arcade cabinets however? Not a lot of them were made. Hell. Darius 1st and 2 had revolutionary cabinets inspite the few that there were. And E-Swat was a common case of the Arcade original being a different game, though there was an underdeveloped port for the Amiga. Old school gaming secrets pre online gaming and annoying DLC era is much more entertaining to unearth. People who think PS1, N64, Sega Saturn and the like are old school, (even though I like them - especially Saturn). Should take a chance with an era that was both great and unique because of limitations.

Gonna have to find this-just the description of those bosses reminds me of how wildly imaginative the 80’s era of gaming can be! I don’t make requests of anyone often, but I’d like to make one now: I’d like to see you take on _Ninja Baseball Batman!_ It’s not an easy game to find, and I’ve only played the game in a very glitchy form, but from what I saw of that game, there’s a wonderful madness at work in that arcade cabinet!

Another great videa Patrick. Toki was quite a regular fixture in British arcades back in the day and there was certainly a lot of excitement when the home computer ports were being previewed in magazines, but as a then ZX Spectrum owner, I was disappointed to read months later that Ocean cancelled that and the Amstrad CPC versions of it. All was not lost however as I got an Atari STe the same christmas and soon after that, picked up that version for half price at my local WH Smith's. Having played that and the Amiga version, I'll opt for the ST as my favourite of the two only because there's a suprising amount of polish that went into it that rarely features in Atari ST games in terms of programming and overall presentation outside of the likes of software houses like Thalion. The reason..? Much like Thalion's games, the ST version of Toki was prgrammed by an established demoscener who at the time called themselves "M-Coder".
@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I played both versions and preferred the Amiga version due to the better sound and slightly better graphics. I never knew who coded the ST version so thanks

I have the collector's edition of Toki for the Switch. It came in a big box with some art cards and I think a little cardboard kit to make some 3d item? I don't know. It was the only way I could get the game locally, so I just took the game box out of the big box, and then stored the collector's box away out of the heat and air. The newer version is quite fun. @@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Yes I always found the Lynx 2 amazing, I loved it. Although some of the build quality could be questionable. I had to return about 3 units to Argos because of dead pixels!

@@alexojideagu That is terrible. I had the original version and I haven't had the chance to play my actual to my loss of limbs but if I recall correctly I did have a dead pixel at some point. They wouldn't replace it though because only one pixel was bad.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Sorry to hear that! Yeh Argos would replace anything no matter how faulty within 14 days. Once was even my fault ha I took it on a school trip and got dirt in it and they still swapped it for a new one.

I loved this game. Donkey Kong is cool but he never was able to breathe fire. Why this guy didn't have a franchise is beyond me. I would kill for him to pop up as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Toki! I have the Lynx version of this game. That's the only one I have played. I don't think I had ever heard of a Jaguar version in development! Cool but unfortunate that it was not released.

I can’t believe this idea was green lit. Back then the concept of LOL randomness was not a thing.

That's some serious emo music on the 7800 version 😅

As a kid I thought that this game was serious and kinda scary. So, even though I like cartoons, I dont like the cartoony remake. I hope you do Shadow of the beast soon!
