@@adrianbrown3085 The first time I managed to make it past the Turbo Tunnel I was completely distraught to find that the game just kept GETTING HARDER! It wasn't until years later after discovering emulators and save states that I ever actually got around to beating it. I literally had to go frame-by-frame to beat clinger-winger the first time and I remember thinking 'How the HELL did anyone beat this on the cartridge!?' I thought the game was virtually impossible.

I think the Battletoads reboot in 2020 could’ve been so much better if they stuck with the original designs instead going for the safe “family friendly” style.

They also dissed the gamers who grew up on the franchise and the Queen looked more like a princess with that nerf. Just stop squatting all over the fans and make the game enjoyable without the modern audiences stuff.

The farthest I ever got in the original NES classic was the end of Rat Race, but I never had enough lives left to beat General Slaughter. The 50 page comprehensive guide in Nintendo Power was a lifesaver. Thankfully I had a Game Genie and reluctantly used it to see the end. I have fond memories of my sister and I always fighting each other in the second stage using the wrecking ball attack, then her invariably losing in the turbo tunnel. I got to play the arcade game recently and it's a lot of fun too.

Great review. One of only a handful of NES games that I never completed back in the day. My somewhat silly theory is that the designers were seeking revenge for the feedback they received that Wizards and Warriors was too easy. So with IronSword and BattleToads they decided to torture us and made sure no one would ever say such a thing ever again. I think if NES Battletoads was given unlimited continues or a password less of us would have rage quit in defeat.

I did not like the updated art style at all Xbox could’ve delivered way better and the game would’ve been way more popular as a result. I will say the gameplay was incredibly fun and challenging.
@SotNist8 ай бұрын
I like the art style. It was super clean, cartoony, expressive and lended itself well to the seamless transitions between gameplay styles and cartoon episode style sequences. I've always been OK with the innumerable variations of TMNT cartoons and comics, so it wasn't a big deal for me. I think it could have functioned as an interactive TV Pilot episode for an ongoing animation series as well. I suspect the development probably got some of it's internal support cut after the extreme overreaction to the initial reveal trailer. In terms of popularity, it probably would have been able to find a niche if older fans hadn't gatekept it so hard. There's a few meta jokes in the game that kind of touch on the circumstances, I think.
@cliffchampion55018 ай бұрын
@@SotNist I agree the game was definitely fun. But the game was founded on hardcore heavy metal rock appeal with its hard edge art stylings. And to go from that to what we got wasn’t an easy transition, it was just very watered down. Most gen z kids don’t connect with cool designs like the stuff we grew up with. But rather happy go lucky fluffy or goofy stuff from what I see in the games they love like. Besides most Battle toads fans were the older gamers from that generation of kids like myself and we waited years for this and wanted to see a fully loaded modernized version with the cool classic look.

Only reason I was ever able to beat Battletoads was the repelling Wookie Hole level. I got stupid good at getting extra lives from the crows in that level. It would give you throwaway lives so you could spend more time getting used to and memorizing the different aspects of the game. Add to that the warps in the speeder bike level and the snake pit - and even with that I only beat the game once or twice. The only level I could never beat was Volkmire's Inferno.
@Lastjustice8 ай бұрын
The Nes game is something I've beaten without any cheats from start to finish, but I had to use Game Genie and infinite lives as training wheels to get to that point. My middle brother and I would warp staight to a stage, and get killed repeatedly till both of were good enough complete the stage together. We'd usually turn the game off after getting through the level. We go through level by level till we could put all together and do the entire thing. This of course ran into a wall at lvl 11, as you can't beat the Clinger Winger with two people as the second player controls are bugged.(Some other poster claims it's doable.) They will simply die over and over helplessly. No one ever made it far enough into beta testing with two characters to catch the bug in time. The Arcade game I think is probably the best overall experience as it's tough, but not as ball breaking as the NES title. Beating a 3 player beat em up affair, I think it grabs a much larger audience as it's not weighted down by the stupidly hard vehicle parts. I fiorst played the Arcade beat em in my early teens and just laughed my ass off when I saw the over the top animations. A younger kid happen to join in as I played, and we were both laughing so hard. I actually remember tearing up from laughing so much. Young boys definitely were the target audience for this game, as it was SUPER EFFECTIVE. I didn't see in too many places, or I would played it all way through. I didn't get to beat from start to finish till a year or two ago at the Galloping Ghost with a friend of mine who never played it before. He said was his favorite game he played that day when we went there for a couple hours with his wife and daughter. Battle Toads and Double Dragon was definitely more Battle Toads than a Double Dragon game. It felt like a mod of the NES game with the double dragon cast inserted. It's fun enough, and much easier than the original game, but I wonder how many people were like I want to play as the Toad not the Lee brothers, but were forced to as player 2.

In my opinion as the series progressed the difficulty Getting lower and lower. With that being said the fun factor went up for me especially with the arcade game. I loved the over-the-top animations as well.

Of all the fighting games like Double Dragon out there Battletoads is my favorite just because u are not just fighting on each level & i was still in High School & used my own money 2 buy the game 4 my best friends birthday. You bet I was at his house 2 play this game too! Also because like Castlevania this was not a port from the Arcades it was made specifically for the Home Console! To this day I still have not beaten the Classic NES or Game Boy game! The higher you climb Zit, the further you fall & then you'll pop like a Zit! This game is brutal...!!!!

I was only able to beat it with the cheat device so don't feel too bad. This has to be one of the hardest gaames I've played

Excellent video about a good franchise, which unfortunately has been forgotten. The last release could have been better worked on. I played on SNES and Megra Drive a long time ago

I whole heartedly agree, they should’ve kept the hard rock look and music of the original with modern animation.

I still can't reliably beat the turbo tunnel 30ish years later despite getting this for Christmas the year it came out.

I still love the Battletoads, but do to my seizures I can never play it again. But I do remember when Battletoads and Double Dragon came out, my brother and I looked at each other and said this game would have been better if the Battletoads had been teamed up with the Turtles instead.

I remember renting the game after reading the Nintendo power and being totally disappointed that it was so hard. I took it back really quick.

Which is terrible considering how fantastic the graphics are. A lot of people never got to see them

As a kid it was the speed bikes I couldn’t get by. Then when I finally did, the rest of the game wasn’t too bad for me.
