In Latin America, Neo Geo was a great phenomenon, especially for the Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug and King of Fighters sagas. The Neo Geo cabinet could not be missing in grocery stores at the neighborhoods. It was a tradition for mothers to send their children to buy things at the grocery store, but the problem was that kids spent the money playing, which was a guarantee that they would be severely punished. It would be nice if you would review some of these games in the future, especially the aforementioned franchises. Neo Geo was the best console we ever played, but never owned.

LOL, I can recall even back in the mid-90s talk of something called a multi-game hunter which was a piracy device for this unit. Apparently it would copy games onto floppy disks instead of actual cartridges. This device was extremely expensive as well though.

It was a luxury product, I could barely afford an Amiga at the time. I did collect most of the MVS titles during the noughties when they were reasonably affordable and I had my own income though, prefer to own the arcade versions anyway.

I remember seeing this imported from Japan in 1990 and was blown away by the graphics. It was just so expensive that it was like some incredible unicorn that u couldn't touch. It was the forbidden candy that only the rich could eat, as Patman says u have to understand that when this came out it was the same as having the arcade at home. No other company had done this before.

A friend of mine had the home console version and I can tell you those cartridges were HUGE! It was an amazing console and the upright version was even better since it had the ambiance of an arcade. Sweet early 90s memories.

Great video! Back in 1992, when I was a kid, I used to go to video stores (Videomax). I used to play Sengoku a lot with my friend. Now, I am proud to be the owner of my very own Neo Geo MVS 2-slot cabinet. Yep! I have Sengoku MVS cartridge.! I will keep this until my time is up.

The First time I ever played a Neo Geo Cabinet was at this bowling alley in Astoria QueensNYC. I remember Magician Lord, Baseball Stars, Nam 75 and The Super Spy were the games selectable. I remember laughing hard at the Engrish voice actor of Nam 75, or Magician Lord. Dale Lord of the Gods stage music was etched in my head. Also fun fact many of these games were programmed and tested on a Sharp x6800. Great video Patman!!!

The Art of Fighting was the first Neo Geo arcade game that I ever played and I was immediately hooked on the large player sprites. There was literally nothing else like it at that time.

I have been following this system since it was released here in the USA back in 1991, when a buddy bought one, when I suggested it to him, as he wanted the most high tech system available. Now I own an AES, MVS, and the two Neo mini's released, plus a decent collection of carts. The quality of the games were good, which is why it lasted as long as it did, as well as the fact that it took advantage of the fighting game craze at the time as well. I still play the Neo several times a week, on a an older TV of course.

The local Walmart had the first Neo-Geo arcade machine when I was in high school. It had Cyber-Lip, Sengoku, Ninja Combat, and Burning Fight on it. Ninja Combat being my favorite. Then the PX on the air force base got one in their arcade, which got me hooked on Fatal Fury. The system did inspire awe at the time.

I love your retrospectives... they are full of facts and information that the general player does not know. Your coverage of ports and remakes on specific games are outstanding to see how the old system conversions were made (good or bad). Neo Geo being a full system is very hard to cover it's array of genres and 140+ game titles. Looking back through your archive, it seems you only did 1 specific "History of" on Windjammers, probably because of the release of WJ2 a few months prior to that video. Hopefully you will do more of the individual or specific genre SNK series at some point. I know there isn't much to cover in the aftermath of these games as there were only re-release ports on other consoles and no real emulation or recreations on home computer systems to showcase. But the history behind the games is what you do best.

You definitely should cover more Neo Geo games, since there are countless classics on there. Not really thought of for its beat em up games but it has some excellent ones like Robo Army, Mutation Nation, Sengoku 3, etc. Then there are the amazing shmups like Blazing Star and Pulstar. And tons of fighting games like Garou Mark of the Wolves, Samurai Shodown, King of Fighters, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, etc. Not to mention there are 6 Metal Slug games, with 2 and X being the very best. You also forgot the Shock Troopers games and the first one is perhaps the best overhead/isometric run n gun ever (with MERCS being the only real competition).

I Have Been Waiting for This Moment to watch everything about Neo-Geo and it's games.. Another Excellent Video, Mr. Patman..and I'm Planning to have my snacks while watching more of your videos and I have still loving your content too..I played Baseball Stars too and which I enjoyed it very much and my personal favorite Golf game is Neo-Turf Masters..for fighting games I played The King of Fighters because it has 4 of it's characters that came from their series in the 80s like Psycho Soldier and Ikari Warriors..and finally I have a big love for Metal Slug Series which still up to this day..and lastly I Developed a Passion of Bowling since long time ago..and I'm going to try playing it when the time comes..hope to have a very wonderful excellent day 😊👍

I played in the arcade right at the beginning in 1990, and still play to this day on various platforms. Highlights include: Samurai Shodown 2, Crossed Swords 1&2, Puzzle Bobble (Bust A Move), Neo Turf Masters, Sengoku 2, Super Dodge Ball, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Great documentay, I admire your delivery. Could you do a doc on Neo Turf Masters? It's the best golf game on Neo Geo, even for those of us who aren't really into Golf.

So many memories. I joined the Air Force in December ‘91 aged 16. A local pub where I was stationed had a Neo Geo. Sengoku and King of Monsters were my games of choice . I was introduced to beer and one heck of an arcade machine simultaneously. Happy days 😃😃😃

I gotta admit I had kind of a love-hate relationship with Neo Geo. A small part of me was always annoyed seeing those ubiquitous red cabinets everywhere because to me part of the charm of arcade games in the 80s especially was the unique cabinet artwork and control layouts for so many games, and this generic standardized box was the total antithesis of that. On the other hand, the system had a lot of great games and some that I fell totally head over heels for. The ones I have the fondest memories of playing and probably put the most money into are Puzzle Bobble, SamSho 2, Metal Slug 1, Neo Drift Out, and Super Sidekicks. Would love to see a video on the Samurai Shodown series sometime. I sucked hard at those games, but boy were they still fun to play anyway!

Great video! I just found your channel and am working my way through the back-catalog. I never knew anyone who had an AES growing up, but I used to lust over the advertisements as a kid. I have fond memories of playing Metal Slug at my local WalMart (before they were “supercenters”) I remember the cabinet was a 4-way with Samurai Showdown, Art of Fighting, and one of the Metal Slugs with zombies. I also had Super Baseball 2020 for SNES but never knew it was previously an arcade game. By the time I had my first job at 14, the N64 was around the corner. Anyway, your video turned me onto some beat-em-ups that I never knew existed like Gang Wars and Ninja Combat. Time to fire up MAME lol.

Thanks a lot. In the early 90s I knew a guy who had a high-paying job who was around 35, single and lived alone. Every week for a few months he would spend $200 out of his paycheck and buy a brand-new Neo Geo game. I was so jealous :-)

Like you said, arcade cabinets really used to be everywhere. Some of my fondest memories as a kid was riding my bike to this local campground that had Turtles in Time and a few others I can no longer remember. There's still a cabinet in this local gas station in my city, it's out of the way, but was a head turner when I stopped in for a quick fill up.

I must have spent a small fortune on Alpha Mission 2 at my local video store. It was an amazing game and I loved playing it. I used to grind at this game a few days a week, at $1 per play (in 1992 Australia). After a few weeks, I actually became very good at it and on the penultimate day, I managed to get to the final boss on one credit only to be killed seconds away from victory. The video store owner was watching me intently, quickly ran up to the machine and dropped in another credit. Seconds later I defeated the game. I thanked the bloke for the extra credit until he told me (to my dismay) that he keeps the games at the video store until someone beats it , which usually took a few weeks. He had Alpha Mission 2 sitting there for a year and basically wanted it gone, hence the extra credit. Fortunately he told me the next place the machine was going to so I could continue my addiction to this wonderful game. Many years later, I managed to get my hands on an actual MVS cart of Alpha Mission 2, along with various Metal Slug carts.

As a kid, my friends and I used to go to the local Wal-Mart almost every day during summer vacation to play Samurai Shodown. Still love that game! For anyone else that never had a NeoGeo home console, there's a replica SNK MVSX home arcade machine available now that comes with 50 built in NeoGeo games. It looks very close to the original red cabinet design (though just a bit smaller) and plays fantastic. I got mine for $500, which is absurd to think the original console with 1 game still cost way more than that in the 90s! And $200 per game is complete madness. Thanks for the video, and I'd love to see you cover more NeoGeo games!

Man do I ever remember lusting after these when I was 11. The Neo just seemed so far ahead of other consoles at the time. Too bad the types of games for them were ratehr limited, as I prefer a good RPG or strategy game, but those genres weren't really what Neo Geo owners were looking for, and those types of games aren't in any arcade, and that's what the Neo Geo was, a literal arcade system you can take home.

The first time I saw one of these cabinets at 7-11 I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I rode my bike home like the wind to beg for quarters to play Magician Lord. I got $5 and it lasted about 3 min. No slurpee for me that day but I didn't care though it was amazing.

We never had arcades in my part of Australia but we did have cabinets in a newsagent, fuel stations and the bowling alley. Most of the cabinets were SNK cabinets. We still have one place that has 1 Tekken arcade cabinet.

SNK definitely had some great titles. I have recently gotten Metal Slug 3 for my Xbox One. It is absolutely brutal in difficulty but is fun. Great video!!

Remember playing the arcade versions at rest stops and arcades at the mall. The home version got stuck with the ports on SNES/Genesis versions. It be cool if you cover the other Neo Geo games too

Although I've seen games before it, Atari with a friend, and Super Mario Bros and Castlevania 3 (cousin had a nes), The first game I ever played on the arcade was "Ninja Combat" for the Neo Geo, I loved playing that game when I was a Kid, I recently bought a MVS console, and I plan on getting that game, and keep it til my last breath.

When I saw a NEO-GEO machine I knew I was in a kick ass arcade! A grocery store with just a NEO cabinet and a claw game could beat many arcades even then in my small town! This was the creme de la creme of video games in early 90s!!! What's the beat-em up with the red and blue robot dudes? We played the sheets off that baby!

I almost bought the neo geo mini but I opted in on the snk arcade stick pro. Along with a controller adapter USB its my go to for playing fighting games on modern consoles. But the fighting games built in is nice to play once in a while.
