Strider blew my mind when it first came to the arcade. The character and sword movement was so awesome. And when you have things like the gravity reversal stuff it was just crazy. It felt like one part ninja, one part light saber wielding Jedi.

Long-time fan/sub. So glad you enjoyed my Strider (2014). It really was a labor of love. Back when the original Strider arcade came out, I fell in love and wrote into my "Videogame Developer Bucket List - Make a Strider-like game." Fast-forward to 2014 and I got to mark that off my bucket list! So glad you had fun with it!

There is a character Zeku in Street Fighter 5 who is seemingly the first Strider, or at least one of the major influences on the creation of them. He even proposes calling his fighting style Striders in his ending and has an outfit very similar to Hiryu's when in his younger form. Edit: No sword though he does have kick animations that mimic the blade, a bird that drops bombs, and instead of a dog/wolf a ferret that advances across the screen then does a very cute flying kick.

Zeku, which is the first Strider, is in SFV. He would later be responsible for Strider Hiryu. You can tell Zeku is a strider by choosing his alternate costume. It's quite amazing to see that the Strider universe is canon with the Street Fighter universe.

Galloping Ghost Arcade was the first place I have seen a Strider cabinet, and also its spiritual successor, which is called Cannon Dancer in Japan and Osman outside Japan. The story goes that Kouichi Yotsui had wanted to make another Strider game, but Capcom was not interested at the time, so during Yotsui’s time at Mitchell Corporation, he and some other former Capcom staff made Osman/Cannon Dancer as sort of an unofficial sequel to Strider. Most of the play mechanics from the original game are there, except that Kirin, the main character, has no weapon, and instead uses kicking as his main form of offense. I got to play Osman when Galloping Ghost unveiled it as their Monday mystery game on June 11, 2018, and nowadays anyone can play it, since it got ported to the PS4, PS5 and Switch in 2022. Strictly Limited Games has physical copies for all 3 platforms. Great video as always!

This video prompted me to look up Junko Tamiya (composer), which led me to the work called "Snow in Savanna", which can be found on KZbin. This seems to have been one of the prototype tracks from which the majority of the arcade game's (amazing, challenging and weird) soundtrack was developed. I never played the arcade version of Strider. I don't recall ever seeing it in the wild when I was a kid. I imagine it blew people's minds given the graphics were quite impressive for it's time. It looks like a quarter muncher, but I imagine it's beatable with practice. I did play the NES version. The issue most people I know who played it rented it, and never had a manual to get past Egypt. So most people I know never got to play the bulk of the game. My younger brothers bought Strider for like 4 bucks from funcoland(They were happy get a game even if it was a turd like LGN's Xmen game. It was so cheap it didn't matter.), so I tried get through it but got stuck at that point. You can't beat the shark miniboss and survive without the water boots, those require you to rebound to a higher area that's normally too high to jump up. I shelved it for a bit. I happen to read a review for another videogame in Gamepro that mentioned your character could bounce off walls like in Strider which made me go oh...may be that's a thing, and then tried to see how that worked. I put on a turbo for my a button and jumped at a wall, and sure enough it eventually bounced upwards. Once I learned that you could bounce off the walls with a properly timed jump I was able to finish the rest of the game in a short period of time. The game has alot of depth but really would benefitted from a ingame tutorial mode. (Like charging your cipher requires to hold up till it's ready, the game never tells you how it functions.Only that you unlocked it when you speak to the one guy.) The Genesis game Strider Returns is just meh. I never enjoyed it as much as the NES game. I got it as a gift, so I can't complain too much. I gave it a couple times, but only made thru to may be the 2nd or 3rd levels. I eventually threw on game Genie and beat it just see the whole game, and never touched it again. If it wasn't for this video, I'd probably still forget I own it. I played the PS1 port on my PS3, but it got lost in my backlog of games. I didn't play it enough to have any strong opinion one way or another. I probably should give it more time at some point. The Newest Reboot however looks solid, and I am shocked this hasn't gotten on my radar sooner. I will probably grab that whenever I decide to go on another digital spending spree.

It's a weird cycle. Elements of Strider were inspired by Star Wars, which in turn were inspired by Japanese films.

In the 90s after playing Strider on Genesis me and my friends would randomly say ooka bitchy because thats what it sounds like the amazon enemies are saying. During those days it was not common for videogames to have voices so it amazed us when the main villain talks shit.

I always felt Strider II got an exaggerated amount of flak. The major problem with it is the fact the level design doesn't work for the game. Apart from that I don't see any issues. Be aware also you mentioned that the DOS version ran very choppy but you show footage of the game running at a good speed.
