I appreciate this video highlighting the Taurus 605. I'm a wheel gun fan, and have a number of Colts (old & new), a couple Rugers, many Smith & Wessons (including a few Performance Center offerings), a Kimber K6s, and a number of Taurus revolvers, including the 605. I did a Galloway hammer spring & trigger return spring swap, and that 605 is a sweet, smooth-shooting revolver that gives any of the others a run for the money. With Galloway springs, I got the DA trigger pull into the 10.5 lb range, and SA trigger pull between 3-3.5 lbs. Very smooth, and no issues with light primer strikes... Galloway did their homework. A bit of internal parts polishing with some Flitz and you're gold. Pat, if you have not tried one yet, find yourself a Taurus 327, chambered in .327 Federal magnum... you get six shots -- instead of five -- in the exact same sized frame as the 605, and that .327 round gives you near-.357 mag ballistics. Also, FYI, that very same Galloway spring kit will also work for the Taurus Model 327.

As another has said I too have gone to mostly revolvers. I live in poophole LA county. We can only have 3 guns on our permit. 2 of them are Taurus revolvers. I got an 856 executive grade, a 856 UL stainless hammerless, and I also have a glock 26 on my permit. When I go out for my walks it's the 856 UL and a zeta 6 speedstrip, plus my Cold Steel Voyager Vaquero. When it's around the town or with my wife it's the Executive riding strong side and my UL riding off hand. I keep the Executive Grade loaded with the Buffalo Bore 158 grain +p and the UL with the Hornaday 110 grain +P. Other times I carry my Glock 26, sometimes with the UL on the ankle. Guess the 856 is my go to at the end of the day. Hammerless versions since I tend to wear clothing that snags.

I have a question for both you guys, and I've heard Sam talk about this before but how do you guys think the 605 would hold up to a regular diet of magnum ammo? Im not talking about crazy Underwood or Buffalo Bore stuff just your average factory 357 magnum. Or is it more of a practice with 38 and carry 357 type of deal? I've been looking at the 3 inch 605 and the new Rossi RP63 but I don't want to waste the money if they're glorified 38 special revolvers. I love the 38 make no mistake but I want to be able practice with 357 too. If Ruger wasn't charging Colt prices for an SP101 this wouldn't even be a question but I can't bring myself to spend $750 on a $500 revolver.

Just bought my first gun two days ago. After holding probably 10 different revolvers between Charter Arms, S&W and Taurus, I decided on the Taurus 605. For the price point, it was a must for me. It’s a neat little gun, haven’t shot it yet but I plan on shooting .38 for target practice and .357 for self-defense (god forbid). I’m a relatively lightweight dude at 150lbs and carrying the 605 isn’t too heavy in my opinion. It has some heft, but I think it’s necessary if you plan on shooting .357 because they KICK!

I've gone back to carrying revolvers. I carry 2 and 3 for high threat locations (downtown carry) and a couple of speed strips. I utilize a NY reload strategy. The Taurus small frame is perfect for the NY reload. I would be apprehensive to throw down a Detective Special, a Chief Special, a K6S, or even an SP101. I have 5 856s (chose the 856s for the extra round) of all different flavors depending on my carry requirements (3inch, ultralites, concealed hammer). Most with lasers. These have been reliable in my experience and I feel no guilt in dumping one of these to the ground should it run dry. Like you, I have plenty of nice revolvers but for self defense, it just needs to go bang and, if you do your job, hit what you're aiming at. I like the redundancy of carrying 2, I like that I can share if needed, and one of my 2 EDCs is easily accessible via left or right hand. When I carry 3, 2 are easily accessible from the right or left hand. Same manual of arms for all. I like the steps you took to class up your little Taurus. I may take those steps with my 3in but for now that is my primary which sits at 4 o'clock with a laser grip. Thanks for all you do for the wheel and lever gun communities. I wish someone would reissue something like the IMI Timberwolf or a Carbine version of the Colt Lightning.

My batting average with Taurus has been under 500, so I don't use them for self defense. Tuning one is problematic because there is no aftermarket for internal parts except springs. I put them in the same category as Rossi and Charter Arms revolvers, a decent choice for those on a tight budget who do not shoot regularly, or anyone who simply wants a plinking gun, but not good enough for serious daily carry.

Ok... here is a real review from someone who has a Taurus 605 on his hip. Mine is the "defender" (3 inch barrel) version. I prefer the 605 over the S&W J frames because I can always hit the "stage"... for some reason, all of the 637, 638, 642, & 60 Smiths have at least one chamber that I cannot reliably (98% or better) stage the trigger. I am a NRA Instructor and Maryland Qualified Handgun Instructor and have owned various revolvers and semi-auto pistols for decades. The incident at the foodcourt at the Indiana mall led me to change my every-day-carry from a small semi-auto to a small revolver. I shoot better at distance (over 25 yards) with a small revolver than I do with one of the modern 'wonder nines' (G43x, P365, etc...). The defender started shooting at the bad guy at 40 yards with his 3.42" Glock, eventually landing 8 hits of 10 rounds fired and was approximately 27 yards from the attacker. He missed his first couple of shots and had to get closer to make solid hits. If the bad guy was trained, the good guy would have been dead after his first miss (40 yards is an onerous shot with a pistol but a 'gimme' with a rifle). I teach my students to only engage a threat at a distance that they can shoot a 4" group at the range - that group will expand 3x its size when adrenaline kicks in. If the threat is at distance, cocking the hammer to get a single-action trigger helps with accuracy, as does having 100% barrel length being actual rifled barrel in a revolver (that 3.42" glock is only a 2.2" barrel because the first 1.2" is chamber which is never included in revolver barrel length but always included in pistol barrel length). Regardless of the 'whys', i am more accurate with a revolver. And shot placement trumps everything else in a gunfight. As far as reliability, one thing needs to be done to the 605. Carefully remove the yoke screw (it is hollow and houses a spring & detent pin), put some thread lock on the screw & reinsert it. S&W 60 has threadlock on it from the factory but Taurus does not. Other than polishing the internal parts, the absence of threadlock on that one screw is the main difference in these two guns. Parts are 99% interchangeable. My 605 is running some model 60 internals. One huge advantage of the 605 is the removable/replaceable front sight. Taurus sells the Ameriglo front sight for $28.00. More importantly, you can file it down to get a zero at a further distance without fear of screwing up your gun if you file too much. I could talk for days on this gun, so i will end it here and just add that it absolutely can handle hot 357 loads - just make sure to Locktite the yoke screw.

@@ricjona1069 watching a video now. Definitely some similarities, but yea it’s different. But easy to swap springs and polish factory parts to smooth things out.

Bought my 605 back in 07. Love it. Changed the tiny grips and it was perfect. Back in 07 I think I paid under $250.00. Great little snubby.

Good afternoon Pat from Stone County, Missouri on Table Rock Lake just a few miles West of Branson. Just found your channel today and I must say, I am not a fan of double action for me personally due to accuracy issues. Now that's just me. But you hit the nail on the head when you stated one word, and that word is "discipline". The trigger pull on my 605 is around 12 pounds, so if I am target shooting and want that accuracy, I shoot single. But, there may come a time in everyone's life, when they may not have time to cock that hammer back, that's where the discipline comes into play at. I was absolutely impressed implementing that discipline and hitting those targets at that distance. (we'll overlook the one that got away). Great job, great video!! By the way, I'm 70 years old go to the range and not shooting blanks. God bless you brother and GOD BL:ESS AMERICA. 2024 is going to be a great year in our country's history. My main carry is a Canik METE SFX 9mm. 20+1 and an 18 spare.

I changed out the rubber grip to a larger one made a big difference. I don't pocket carry this pistol I use in the belt holster.

Wilson Combat has i nice trigger spring kit for the 605. I put them in my 686 and 605 both the smith and taurus ran 200 rounds without a light strike and the double action trigger pull is down to 8 pounds.
@michaelbradley648810 ай бұрын
I owned the 38 special version, it was nice, but the double action pull was quite heavy and the only real complaint I have about that gun.
@repetitivemotion10 ай бұрын
Put in a spring kit it’s easy and changes the pull drastically

I purchased this about 5 months ago but with the 3” barrel. It works well but definitely gives you a bite. I wanted it as a nightstand gun, using 38+p. It works well.

Not my favorite but they are great 357 for the money, I wouldn’t mind having a cheap 3” with the front night sight. For the money can’t beat it.

The 605 was my first carry gun in 2004. I paid $200.00 new and put a $300.00 Crimson Trace laser grips on it (nothings too good for our friends). I don't carry it much, but it stays next to my bed. I left enough of the hammer to still fire single action if need be.

Good thing about revolver cartridges is you can adjust the powder/charge to adjust for weight and barrel length.

I have a shiny one that I bought in 1995. I still carry it today. It’s a 5 shooter and easier to conceal. I have never bought another gun since. Pistols various but no guns.

i've had mine for about 5 or 7 years. I rarely shoot it, just sits in the safe. But it hasnt exploded or gone off on it's own. That's a good sign

I removed hammers on most of my revovers. Only the 856 Defender still has a spur and that might leVe soon. Single action is foolish for self defense better to disable that function.
@jesseboutdoors10 ай бұрын
I still have mine. If I was to do it all over again I’d get the 856. I shoot nothing but 38 special +P out of mine. I’d rather have the extra round of the 856. Besides that the 605 is a great gun.

Well, I decided to trade out the stock rubber grips on mine for a Hogue mono. It does feel better. The stock grip fits my hand ok with my pinky supporting the bottom but it does hurt with magnum loads. I don't shoot them in this that often but the Hogue grip also just gives me a bit more control. I obviously came back to watch again...

Cool gun! I‘m debating between this and a used Colt Detective Special. Yes, the Colt is only .38 Special, but it is also less of half the price than a new 605 in my country. Plus you read a lot about people having trouble with their 605s.. A Colt Detective from the 80s can be had for 250 Euros where I live, 605 costs 550 Euros

Great review. BuffaloBore page says .357 heavy outdoorsman load can have crimp jump issues in light alloy frames. Does the 605 fall into that group?
@gk58915 ай бұрын
No. It's a stainless steel frame. Make sure you measure the cylinder length to make sure it's long enough. I have had small revolvers in the past that the cylinder was to short for 180 gr.

Is it normal to see ricochet in the brush Infront of the target about halfway to you and the target? How safe is that in your opinion and is there a safe distance to stand when shooting steel?

Any ideas how much ballistics and fps you lose in 2 inch versus say 3 inch? Some are commenting it’s only 50 fps, but other sources say about 300 (i.e. ballistics by the inch website).
