That's the beauty of a Taurus. Normal people don't buy them for competitive shooting matches, or stick them in a safe as a future collectible. They make solid guns, designed for functionality and basic reliability at an attractive price. My first ever gun was a Taurus model 85 that I picked up around 30 years ago. It did everything I wanted and it ran me around $250.

I agree with you! And sometimes the nicer the gun the less people want to shoot it. Most people just want to carry some form of protection in case they are ever in a dangerous situation, which is very rare for the most part.

I use mine for EDC. I got the stainless version to resist humidity and sweat while carried on my body. I painted the front sight with neon orange nail polish, and went over that with clear nail polish. I carry mine in an Allen spiderweb pocket holster. I also carry that exact load in it. The Hornady Critical Defense 110gr +P. I was unaware they stopped making that ammo... I carry a reload in my back pocket on a Bianchi speed-strip. It might not be as fast as an HKS speed loader, but it's flat and doesn't print or completely fill my pocket, and any reload is better than no reload.

@@fernandojacinto8049 Yes. Hornady Critical Defense 110gr +P, Remington 125gr SJSP +P, and Speer Lawman 158gr FMJ +P. For the money the Taurus 856 is a fine revolver. Cylinder lockup is tight, and there is barely any endshake. The finish is matte (bead blasted) and not particularly attractive, but all parts are well fitted with no machining marks. Much better than a Charter Arms Undercover I used to own. I've shot half a dozen different loads through my revolver (+P and standard pressure) and they all shot to POA at 7 yards.

Taurus changed hands in 2014. CBC, the company that manufactures Magtech ammunition (among many other things), took control of the company. Since then, they’ve made a lot of good moves and only a few mistakes. I always wonder what gun prices in the U.S. would be like if there weren’t companies offering more affordable firearms. I think everything would be more expensive when it comes to guns. That’s the beauty of capitalism... as Mr. Spock would say: 'Infinite diversity in infinite combinations!' 🖖 :D

I'm looking to get this model. Being 70 years young I started shooting 1911's and revolvers. A lot of folks don't know but there was several years in Taurus history when Smith & Wesson was a Parent Partner owning Taurus. That is why their guns are so similar to S&W revolvers. Best to ya',,,,!

But after graduation, qualifying, and released from field training, I wore it every day. And it kept me above ground in three shootings during my career. Best $175 I ever spent! Stay safe amigo. @@anangryranger Back in '75 that $175 was not cheap compared to what Law Enforcement was being paid in most areas! Today, after seeing so much P.D. Camera footage on-line where a 9mm won't stop the threat, I'm seriously considering going back to the 1911 .45 a.c.p.? What do you think? Yes, I do get the whole shot placement issue. But, you being in three shootings, would you want to carry a 9mm in lieu of a larger round? Best to ya',,,,!
@anangryranger
@anangryranger 2 жыл бұрын
@@walterminer4990 Yes sir, I was fresh out of the service and I didn't spend much on alot of things. But yes, I started out as a police recruit at $4.50 an hour, and after 6 months probation, it went to a whopping $5.00 an hour. And today, I live on a pension that places me at 12% below the national poverty level. One of my many additional duties was being the head of the officer shooting review board. We investigated every officer involved shootings. On or off duty. We had at the time 1350 sworn officers, and there were often armed incidents that resulted in a shooting. When we carried 357Mag, the rounds fired per individual incidents was 1.3 rounds. Later, as the dept went to 9mm, that number jumped to 5.7 rounds. I attended every autopsy and studied medical reports on every officer involved shooting. We gathered quite a bit of data. It supported the fact that the 9mm was not an effective round. However, it has become the popular choice today. The plastic striker fired 9mm autoloaders are the rage. But I don't care for them. The only autoloader I own is a 1911A1 in 45ACP. And I carry it often today, and quite confident in what it can do. You stay frosty partner.

I bought one like yours 2 years ago except it was a stainless 3" model. In that time I've put over 2000 rounds thru it without a hitch. Mine also shot low so I filed the front sight down slightly and painted it with neon orange fingernail paint. It has smoothed right up and has a better trigger than my Smith 642, is more accurate and gobbles up +P loads with ease and still has a solid lockup. I have shot many Smiths, I own a M10, M64 and a M66, I'll say it, IMHO the Taurus handles better, has a better trigger and is a much better value. The only revolver I prefer is my 7 shot, 3" Ruger GP100 but the Taurus 856 is much easier to CCW. Obliviously I couldn't be happier with mine, in fact I was so pleased with it I wanted a shorter barrel 44 magnum so I bought a 4" M44 6 shot Taurus. It is right on par with my 6.5" 629 Classic only 1/3rd of the price and includes a factory tuned trigger and a ported barrel.

I’ve had this gun for about a year now. It is always wise to carry a speed loader as a back up for extra rounds. I learned that by carrying it in the bottom of the pocket and put the gun in the pocket holster on top of it. It works out great when it comes to reloading since it’s already there for you. Plus you won’t feel bad if you do get into a CCF situation and your gun gets impounded and not one of your prize possessions.

I know I just commented that I got this gun today used for a great price. I just took it apart to inspect and clean it as I thought it was used. I cannot see any evidence that it’s been shot and it still had that Tarus sticker tag on the trigger guard from the factory. The gun store does a lot of business and they usually have yellow tags for used and white tags for new. Today every gun had a yellow tag and used ones had “W box” or “W/O box” on the tags of used ones. Mine had w/box on it. It may be used or not but the internals had no carbon in it and no grease and no large amount of oil. The barrel was spotless and so was the cylinder. The hardest place to clean is around the forcing cone. That’s a usual giveaway of a used gun. This one was spotless. I did put some oil and grease inside where needed and the trigger is like glass now. Either way, I’m really impressed with it. Cylinder alignment is perfect on each chamber too. This may be a keeper!

I would be happy if my 856 could survived that many rounds like you said it did. I am not overly concern with minor stuff like wear marks but more on reliability and durability issue of this revolver. I bought this revolver on a whim because of the looks and budget cost. It's an incredible value, I just handled one at my local shop and will be purchasing one in stainless. I found it to be super light (it wasn't the ultra light aluminum version either) and compact, easily concealable. I can't imagine 38 special even in +p+ snappy for me. My main EDC is a a compact 40 and I don't even find that snappy. However, my G29, S&W's 629 deluxe 3" and 629 Performance in 2.6" are another story...

I have the stainless steel 605 and it's 24 ounces and I love the weight. The 24-ounce weight makes shooting 38 special and 38 plus P so pleasant, as for shooting 357 magnums I could if I needed to as an option but I got a smith 65 &n686 for that stuff. The 24 ounce weight makes 357 bearable for a few in a pinch.

Check out the ZETA 6 .. circular rubber speed strip! It's a rubber speed strip only in a circular pattern load all six at once without bulky speed loaders & knobs .. just insert the six rounds at once and peel off the strip! Voila

Great review, no fluff. Shoot, they are functional art with the emphasis on functional - it is a good jacket pocket carry - if you can get your finger in that holster while still in the pocket, a big surprise to an attacker, for sure.

Hit those spots of wear with an aluminum black pen if you want to clean them up. It'll reblue the metal nicely, although not permanently. I use the pens on several different firearms, since I like to keep my stuff looking as good as possible.

This video shows the black revolver. I do like the black one. I own the Taurus m444 now. I think the next revolver for me is black of Taurus m586.

Here's the real question: 856 steel vs 856 Ultra-Lite (aluminum) The weight savings seems like a great reason to try and pick up the aluminum version I'd love to see taurus do a 6-round 9mm 856 (basically a 905, but name it the 906 I guess lol) and/or also give us an ultra-lite in 327 federal mag
@Jay35738

I really am interested in picking up something in 327! I want to get all the versions of this gun and compare them. Even the TORO one. It's just like should I get and review them or something else for variety, you know? I think the next one is going to be the Ultra-Lite. I'd like to try the defender either way. Especially since I carry in a jacket pocket in winter I can stuff it in there easily with my current jacket

For pocket holsters I recommend DeSantis Nemesis.. or DeSantis Superfly pocket holster.. the only difference between the two is the superfly has a Velcro on flap to prevent printing so no one can notice the outline of your gun.. they both have super sticky exteriors and I have never had the holster come out while drawing

Having one that works is a big plus. It's nice having six instead of five. A simple, reliable EDC setup that is easy and comfortable to carry is the way to go, IMHO. Cosmetic wear marks are going to happen. That's just the way it is.

I have the 3-in defender with the tungsten nitride coating & altamont wood grips.. one good thing about a inexpensive but dependable revolver like this is not only is it low cost to purchase you don't have to spend a lot of money on ammo making sure it's reliable like a inexpensive semi-auto.... To make sure a semi-auto is reliable you have to put approximately 300 rounds through it.. and that's a lot of money off the the start! Yes you should shoot your revolver and become proficient with it but it will be reliable.. without having to test it with three to 400 rounds

For pocket carry the ultralite aluminium frame version would have been better. But on the other side if you find the steel version already snappy the ultralite would be worse.

I love this gun! Yes, it’s a little on the heavy side but it is easily concealed and that weight absorbs the shock of my +p rounds. I’ve put hundreds of rounds through it and not one hiccup. I don’t worry about wear marks, it is a tool just like my favorite circular saw except this one I carry to save my life. It is extremely reliable and WILL fire should you ever be unfortunate enough to be in a situation where you need it. It comes with me everywhere I can legally carry it. I would definitely recommend it to someone who wants some protection that is affordable that you can always have with you.

I have the same gun and it just might take the place of my 9mm Shield+. I prefer to carry AIWB…always with one in the pipe. It has always been on my mind, so I take extra care when holstering, but still…😬. The Taurus was inexpensive, I’ve always wanted a .38sp revolver, and I shoot it very well. The cartridge is pretty comparable in every way to 9mm. Yeah…it’s only got 6 rounds compared to the Shield’s 13. My wife liked it, so we got her one too. The trigger pull in DA is about 12 pounds, so I ordered and easily installed a spring kit from Galloway, which cut it to probably 6 pounds…VERY nice now!
