I don't support everything Lauren stands for, but this Patreon thing is insanity. To me Lauren is one of the most real and honest journalists out there, and even as a moderate I love that about her. We need to start showing these companies that they can't create their own little worlds where they can violate peoples rights and punish them for exercising them. Lauren has consumer rights that has clearly been violated. The Patreon is a service provider (intermediaries) and must continue provide her unless she breaks the service contract, supervening facts prevents the company from providing the service or if she is violating any law that makes the contract null and void. Patreon can not unilaterally suspend the contract, think that the same case of your internet provider, they will suddenly send you a letter saying that you violated some contract term and is cutting your internet without any means of appeal this is a clear abuse.

I've been researching both big and small funding sites as part of this endeavor. I will say, they are all basically one trick ponies as far as funding methods. I'm planning on allowing multiple funding methods for each user. There is also the fact that the common business model for crowdfunding is pretty un-profitable. Patreon for example is bleeding venture capital. They took in $47M from seed and round A , B funding. While they have given out ~$150M (90% of transaction) to creators since 2013, that means based on their revenue model of %5 fees they have only taken in ~$8M to cover their expenses. While that might sound like a lot, their expenses are out of control. Rent alone for their office would range from $375k - $1M+ a year in Midtown - San Francisco. Their staff (75 on page) earning the even less than the San Francisco average wage of say ($75k), would consume $5,625,000 annually before benefits. This is before equipment, furniture, software, legal, and hosting. While they might scale their way to breaking even, they would need to seriously cut staff and move to be profitable.

Before you ignore this, this is not facetious, this is fact you CAN sue them for breach of Canadian consumer protection laws, even if they are an American company. A recent case in British Columbia in which a woman sued Facebook has opened that up to litigation, and given that Patreon violated its own terms of service to ban you (Not to mention that they don't give an appeal process in case they're wrong?
