Actually, the only offspring created without one of the sex gametes are clones like Dolly the sheep. So if he wants to get technical, men are not essential to create life. This process took 3 female sheep and no males. Indeed, I suppose they could have used the genome of a ram, however, the ova casing and uterus of a surrogate would still be needed to grow the offspring. So in either situation females are essential, but life can indeed be created without any contribution from a male...you know...since he wanted to give them an "example of the science of it"...
