This is such a great story telling song. This was Billy's first single released in 1973. "Piano Man" is based on Billy Joel's real-life experiences as a lounge musician in Los Angeles. The song is sung from Joel's point of view as a piano player at a bar, reminiscing about his experiences there & the people he encountered.

OMG! Thank you for reacting to Billy Joel. I grew up listening to him & have been to countless concerts of his. He is a phenomenally talented artist & really doesn’t have a bad song. There is nothing better than standing in a crowd at one of his concerts & he allows the audience to sing the chorus of Piano Man. It’s hard to pick a favorite but my others would be: Movin’ Out; Scenes from an Italian Restaurant; & we didn’t start the fire. His classical music is also a great listen. 😎

There's a video out here on KZbin somewhere of him performing this song live. And he's playing the harmonica AND the piano parts. The harmonica is in like a harness thing around his neck so it's right in front of his face & he leans in to play it WHILE he's on the piano & singing in between. It's wild how talented he is.

Great story telling. It's sad though that so many people go to places like this just to get away. From life. I know, I've done it. And when you wake up the next day hungover to go back to your job, ugh. It's hard. But, somehow that momentary happiness was worth it.

It’s an iconic song, but I remember watching a special episode of “Inside The Actor’s Studio” with Billy Joel, who said that this song has no bridge or key change, so when he walks into a restaurant and a pianist launches into this melody and then realizes…he and Billy lock eyes and then Billy goes 🤷♂️

The song is autobiographical about a time in Joel's career when he was in a contract dispute with his record label and rather than produce music for them under unfair terms, he worked at a piano lounge until his contract with the record label expired - hence the line "Man what are you doing here," because clearly he was too talented to just be playing bars.

This was his break-out hit that started his journey to stardom. The story is about the people he met working The Executive Club in LA. My name's not Davy, but I stayed in the Navy for life. I don't regret it because it's the best thing I ever did. This video takes a little of my imagination. Example: A sailor in uniform doesn't need to point it out. "Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it's better than drinking alone."

My all time fave is The Stranger! It’s a I gotta, there too much truth to it. Piano Man was the first Billy Joel tune I learned to play on the piano but The Stranger is still better! He went on to become one of the most successful artists in history, married Christie Brinkley, the model, they divorced and he’s grown larger than life since! Amazing artist with more talent than most.

I’ve always loved this song, although I never saw the video until much later, as I just wasn’t into watching music on TV. But the lyric and seen that don’t mesh for me is the one where he says the waitress is practicing politics, while the businessman slowly gets stoned. If she was practicing politics, she would let him pat her butt to get good tips, not throw a drink in his lap. When you heard the first strains of the piano, you asked about Ray Charles. Well, he and Billy Joel did a duet together called My Baby Grand. It’s a love song to their pianos and it’s really melancholy in a minor key kind of way. I hope you get a chance to react to it someday. 😊

Billy is the piano man (Bruce Hornsby is up there too!) Why do they not write music like this anymore? Singers today need to step up with their music, lyrics, vocals and musicality too! This is my generation and we're getting kinda old so we need artists to step up and carry on these traditions. If someone can write songs like this, Gabriel Henrique can sing it for them.
