Billy Joel is such a great singer-songwriter from the 70's-90's. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. This song "Uptown Girl" is from his "An Innocent Man" album. It features his then model wife Christie Brinkley. Lots of great songs on it "Tell Her About It", "The Longest Time", "Leave A Tender Moment Alone", "Keeping The Faith", "This Night" etc. My favorite album is "The Stranger" album. All the songs are great including "Just The Way You Are", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "Only The Good Die Young", "She's Always A Woman", "Vienna", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" etc.

I'm excited for you to dive into Billy Joel. His style is so diverse. He's probably best known for being the *Piano Man.* Uptown Girl is my personal fave, however, *We Didn't Start the Fire* is the one that lyrically made the biggest impression on me. It's a good one to look up the meanings since it has so many historical references, with a very strong message.

I actually had a social studies teacher that used we didn't start the fire as a way for us to break down different events. We were split into groups to pick out things that were either related to music or politics, Etc. And the group that picked out the most references won the class competition.😆 if I remember correctly it was one of those half days or something when the teacher just needed to fill in some busy work. But the class loved it. And that was decades ago😆 I knew the song before that, but it gave me a new appreciation for the song. Along with a forever memory to associate with it🥰

Goodnight Saigon will reach in and grab your guts and twist. I simply can't think of a less than stellar song by him, Scene From an Italian Restaurant and Downeaster Alexa are both special to me, of course, Piano Man, and he does a duet with Garth Brooks in concert on the song Shameless (Billy's song) that is a joy to behold. Oh, and he is singing about "she's been living in her white bread world" and he's a "Downtown Man". The official video of A Matter of Trust is just fun, Enjoy Brother Billy, he's awesome!

SO many of Billy Joel’s songs have been used in both TV and movies. I’m not surprised you find the song familiar. I’m sure you’ll find that you’ve heard a bunch of his other songs as well. Piano Man is a classic, as is We Didn’t Start the Fire. Personal fave is This Night. He sampled the melody from Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata in the chorus as a nod to his classical music background. He’s actually gotten a bit of a resurgence. Olivia Rodrigo mentioned him and this song in a couple of her own. Gen Z got curious and his Spotify streams spiked. Pretty cool to see. He’s got a great catalogue of songs to check out!

Billy Joel is one of my fav artists. This song is fun but it’s not the best showcase of his talent. Goodnight Saigon (music video) is great & he has Vietnam vets singing background. Piano man is a classic. I always thought it was white bread world. It's funny. I absolutely love Billy Joel and I think this song is so much fun (and of course the video) but it is far from his most interesting work. He's got a catalogue that is worth doing a deep dive into. It's hard to describe Billy's genre. I'm not even sure he fits into a genre. Some other of his songs that are fun: Matter of Trust (fun, must-watch video); River of Dreams (also video); We Didn't Start the Fire (the lyrics are kind of intense but it's got a great sound); You May Be Right; Tell Her About It. They stayed married for quite a few years had two children but eventually divorced. Btw, your miss hearing the lyrics, the actual lyrics are: “She's been living in her white bread world”. White bread could mean that the rich girl’s life is bland and flavorless like white bread. She has everything so nothing interesting really happens to her.

Billy Joel is most famous for his piano playing. I first heard of him in 1977 with his enduring hit Just the Way You Are. I love Vienna. Lullabye. We Didn’t Start the Fire. A Matter of Trust. Honesty. Uptown Girl was his fifties style album. Not my favorite cuz I’m not a huge fan of that bubble gum style. His music was very good though. He was classically trained somas a singer/song writer, he knew his stuff. He is still very well respected for his music all these years later. Not Stevie wonder genius. But very good
