I've seen a lot of low-budget sci-fi movies and this is one of the best. The acting and special effects were excellent. The 'Devil Girl' was marvellous. They clearly ran out of money for the robot and had to fashion its arms out of flower-pots. My favourite line "While we're still alive, we might as well have a cup of tea".

Without doubt one of the best sci-fi movies of the 50s! Even before the spectacular arrival an interesting story is beginning to unfold, and the film could have just continued as a man-on-the-run movie, but the ET theme cleverly raises the interest far above the initial drama. The craft is brilliantly designed with its stabilising gyroscopic ring, and its size is conveyed effectively when figures are seen on the access ramp. The final scene of the craft is astonishing considering the special effects available at the time. The key to enjoying this marvellous film is to disregard everything you now know about science fiction and view it as audiences at the time saw it. An outstanding film which deserved a better title.

Love it! Great colorization! Into their 3rd stiff scotch just 35 minutes into the movie. Love the homey Brit traditionalism up against a smirking pre- latex dominatrix. Reminds me of Futurama, on the planet of giant women. "I will take you to Mars to breed, But first- Snu snu!" Surprised the hero never commented on her legs. Laffan was before her time.

Stunning, the width, the breadth of the narrative carries the viewer aware into the distant realms of science tens of thousands of years ahead of our own place & time. What a movie, at first the highlight is the tension between the central protagonists and themere humans. If a superior story has been told, I've yet to encounter it, truly words fail. I'd suggest those of more frail disposition watch this space drama in the company of a even tempered soul. Though this is a testing movie it reveals aspects of the human character hereto unexplored. The extraordinary cinematic success of this film is warranted as it crosses a threshold unexamined in mainstream cinema.... 10 stars!

I liked this one, very good for the era. My vote is the Martian dominatrix WAS hot, something about strong women for me. Cool outfit, like Batman's, not sexy but kind of impressive . . Btw if she had come in peace and simply asked for volunteers she would have been successful. Ship was pretty good, beautiful sound but looked flimsy in flight. Weak, how Alan managed to sabotage such a ship so quickly! Poor Nyah, tricked yet again! I almost felt guilty for mankind that she proved so gullible. Another fine UK product from this era. Have any of you seen "X The Unknown"? Another good one, very innovative and scary.

Wow, I loved the movie. The professor spends the entire movie drinking with his people, and as soon as Albert is barbecued in the ship's explosion, the first thing everyone does is get drunk again. Possibly the next day all the staff won't even remember what happens the next night. This is the only advantage of alcoholic beverages. With the knowledge we currently have about Mars, we would become slaves to rocks, dust, sand dunes and ice. Think man had not even been to the moon. There were still 15 years left for the great feat. But it's fun to see what people's conception of that was at that time.

Dangerous cardboard boxes were clearly quite the thing on the red planet.

For 1954 the special effects and even the design of the UFO is amazing. The storyline is not bad and even the woman playing the role of the devil woman is not only beautiful but plays the part good . The Transformer series is also done extremely well but the technology available these days is way different than what they had in '54. There is a pilot episode of Star Trek with Jeffrey Hunter and Susan Oliver called the cage. There are just short videos but I once saw the whole episode before it was deleted. Also well done and I think it's much better than any of the other Star Trek episodes except for Star Trek The Saturn Machine which had some encoded messages about the planet Saturn.

I like how a Martian spaceship capable of traversing "the universe" spews FLAMES from its exhaust nozzles. And that the interior seems to contain absolutely zero amenities to support life, e.g., galley, sleeping quarters, toilet, supply room. It's just one big circular stage with mood lighting.

An interesting approach: the Martian is acting as a complement to the plot. Almost a love story, really.

Low budget sci-fi opera of tosh, Patricia Laffan as the sexy leather clad alien. She died in 2014 aged 94, what a dame.

I am glad I found the B&W version first just before I came across this coloured. The dramatic B&W version seems to suck you in more, while the coloured one feels a bit like a American family series.

Thank you for uploading this. A real fun film! I like the colorization , if looks like early 50s/ late 40s offset lithography color magazine photos and the film has a wonderful stage play feel to it. That and the leggy space Dominatrix is, well, in a word WOOF! ( hot space chicks rule!) Keep finding rare old jewels like this my friend, I'll be waiting!

I wonder what happened to this film when it came out 69 years ago? When I saw the title I tought it was going to be a US B Movie but insteas it turns out to be British with one American in it. Some of the sci fi was years ahed of it's time; before Dr Who and Startrek.
