I have friends in LA who were part of a 'homeschooling co-op'... one of parents who came together, hired a teacher, or teachers, and had their children 'home schooled' by someone they had vetted. That would be a much more accurate model to follow for those who want to have greater say in their children's education, yet don't have the temperament and abilities to be a teacher. Yes, it DOES cost a reasonable amount, but the benefits and rewards are much greater overall. By the time their kids were ready for high school. they put them in public education. The early years are most important, as PBD said!

There's a young man of my aquaintance who just turned 18 and he was home schooled. He plays multiple musical instruments, is an incredible videographer and editor, (one of his recent local interest efforts was PBS good, trust me) has a great vocabulary, is a computer whiz, and is poised and self-confident. I wouldn't say everyone would have the same result, but certainly in his case home-schooling didn't produce a social misfit. I just hope he picks the right college and major. I think he will.

I also went to public school 24 years ago. The difference between then and now is the reason that my children are homeschooled. Good luck with your children’s indoctrination.

Homeschooled my kid for 3 years! He's 11 now. AMAZING!! Now he needs to learn how to deal with people. First week he started a hustle where he was selling these little paper things he makes for .25 cents! I made sure to set that base when I homeschooled him.

I have two kids (middle and HS) and during the pandemic we switched to homeschool and at their age it became very difficult to socialize. Friends moved away and they found themselves alone. At their age they gave up team sports. It became so lonely that I put them back in public school. 3 weeks in and they’re happy to be back.

I was public schooled, in the future I'm going to home school my children up til high school. You want to home school your children because you need to give them moral and educational instruction. In public schools the focus isn't on education, it's on baby sitting. There's nothing you cant learn in a public school that you cant learn in home schooling, in fact the education of home school is better than public school because there's no logistic problems. Home schooling is just the better option than public schooling and I bet you after the pandemic people are going to start homeschooling WAY more because they can morally train their kids and not send them to public school where they'll get corrupted and damaged

My daughter was in public school until "the pandemic ". Since has been homeschooled kind of, her online school has live classes with others kids. I was seriously considering putting her back in public school but my state WA teaches CRT and Gender Identity. Also read a update that our school district which allows a boy who Identity as a girl to use the girls bathroom!...that was a deal breaker for me.

We home schooled our daughter until this year, she is in 3rd grade and is currently enjoying her schooling experience. The main reason we changed was because the home environment with a parental dynamic isn't conducive to the development of academic scaffolding and skills necessary to navigate and excel in social-structured competitive hierarchies. Homeschooling is great for specific outcomes, and we will probably return to it, but it has the same amount of potential downfalls as the school system- its just a matter of how you value your compromises, or compromise your values.

I was homeschooled, my kids are homeschooled. Sports, youth groups, gaming, work, running our real estate investing, my kids are exposed to a lot more people of all ages and walks of life than most kids that sit in a room full of kids there own age and probably demographic (if I’m honest). They also arnt held back to the speed of the slowest kid in class. If they are 10 and they can do algebra, I’m not slowing them down. I think homeschooling gets a bad reputation but mostly by people that feel the need to put their beliefs on you. When I was homeschooled I definitely noticed the sheltered kids, but that’s not representative of all or even most people that choose to homeschool.

There is a stigma that home school kids will be weird, and I'd say it's not that far fetched. But without a doubt the weirdest kids I have ever met went through the school system. Lesson, it's likely the parents that determine the social skills of a child, save for some mental limitations.

Public school punishes socialization, and is sheltering and not letting kids expirence the real world. Homeschool kids can socialize all day and experience the real world if allowed to unlike public school. Ban: mandatory school, gov control over education and curriculum, hsd and ged requirements, public school, directly tax funding schools. Let kids learn job skills and work.

Home schooling is fine but in this day and age where the internet exists, I would probably have to drag my child to go outside and make friends so he doesn't become devoured by an iPad. I mean there are already a good amount of adults who have a hard time finding partners or friends because of the isolation of the internet, so imagine a child who has only had contact with their parents and tutor, and ALSO only see's the world through the lense of an iPad.

He made that answer waaaaay more complicated than he had too. If you homeschool kids all it does is delay the inevitable, which is exposure to the “wrongs” in this world. It’s better for them to see that young where you can still correct and make an impression on them opposed to throwing them in the world at 18 as an adult, whose never experienced anything other what you allowed them too. I’ve seen it in relatives and friends who went that route and imo you have about a 50/50 chance of it going the way you want.

I think home scholling at some point in elementary school is fine. For me the issue is once you get to more advanced classes. There is a reason you switch classes in high school. You can be a whiz in Math but not know anything about advanced english or chemistry. How do you teach classes that generally take specific training to do so?

My biggest concern is socialization of the kids. The point of school is also to let them learn about the world. The threat of indoctrination is very real, but there are some private schools left that arent bad about it. Also, the home schooling option requires a parent to become a teacher, i for one am no teacher and don't have the patience to deal with kids all day even my own

@ Nick P It’s kind of hard for children to learn to socialize when they are forced to sit and be quiet all day. Schools have more in common with prison than a place to learn to socialize. Only prisoners are given more outdoor time as a human right than our children.
