As a product of the public school system, I had never thought twice about homeschooling until my husband and I met the coolest homeschool family ever. My wife and decided to home school our three children during the pandemic. This one decision may end up being the single greatest thing we have ever done for our children. And this is coming from a guy who thrived in public school and was the most ardent defender of public schooling, sports, and social life.

Took the homeschooling route two years ago and now going into year 3. Older is a Ham radio operator, worked at small engine shop now is getting certified in small engines to run his own business. Is in a music group at a High school. Does welding and works on the cars. Younger one is in multiple music lessons, plays for church is in a classroom one day a week, now running his own auto detailing business. Yep homeschool is working just fine and they absolutely love it!!!

I was homeschooled 1-12th grade. I have a total of 4 aunts, plus a grandmother who were teachers. My parents got a lot of well-meaning sh*t from them over the years, but they kept at it because they wanted homeschooled teenagers. I used to hate it, but after the last two years it's not even a question--I am homeschooling my kids too.

I cannot even say in here what I saw working for a preschool. I have a grown son and if I were raising him now I would jump thru hoops to homeschooling. I went to a catholic woman’s conference. Home schooling is good. But many parents have to work. I thank God for Catholic schools. I took my oldest out of public schools after they were pushing the CRT, gay/Tran agenda, boys were going into the girls bathrooms, my daughter felt afraid. Prayed about it and felt holy spirit drawing us to catholic school. My wife approached me, we had not talked and she said " God told her to put our daughter in catholic school". Our daughter is thriving, getting excellent grades and has many kids who share same faith!

@@corporateshill7473 yes its expensive, but there are scholarships, tuition/financial assistance, and your church also can help. As my wife and I talked about it, it's not just school it's helping our daughter establish a strong foundation for life. Also helping her hopefully have a close relationship with GOD. It's sad to see all of of her elementary school friends all have issues and some hurting themselves. 😞 the devil is at work in kids lives more so now than when I was growing up...godbless you

I love your comment about our children’s “faults” really just being our own selfishness. I struggle with that regularly and it’s absolutely true in my case. I love that you own it so you can work on it. The cross changes our views on everything. Thank God for forgiveness and the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

I’ve been a substitute teacher at a Catholic school for just about 4 months now. I’ll never advocate against homeschooling. Some may be helped by being exposed to the state of their community through a Catholic school, but I think more will simply lose their interest in learning; systemized schooling leads to systemized learning, which is harmful. I’ve noticed that the Catholic School heavily trends towards the school teachers and staff imposing themselves upon the students-their systems, grading styles, values, objectives, often arbitrary rules and expectations. God is supposed to be freedom, not imposition. Homeschooling will much more naturally trend towards collaboration, as is the relationships of the Holy Trinity.

Catholic schools were the worse for our son. Most catholic school teachers are paid poorly therefore not inclined to give additional help to an easily distracted 1st grader, even as much as a pat on a shoulder. All schools follow the state curriculum. We tried all, and homeschooling is the best option.

I’ve been in public schools my whole life and it was terrible. My mom hated her catholic school upbringing so that’s where her and I differ, but honestly I’m torn between finding a good catholic school vs homeschooling

Every family is different! Pray with your wife about it and consider your individual children. For us it started out as necessity as it would cost us over $25K per year to send our kids to Catholic school. After doing it for 4 years, I don't know if we'd send them now even if they could go for free. We love homeschooling!

Since nuns were replaced by regular teachers, there are no more good Catholic schools. The few nuns left are up in the director offices or treasury depts. Catholic schools hire teachers from same pool of teachers as public schools. Save your money and headaches and homeschool. You will not miss the agressive fundraising emails, it takes a full time job just to read them.

As adults we have many different peers though. We have peers at work, peers at church, peers when we go to the store or a concert, peers at sporting events. Why do you expect a child to spend the bulk of their time with only same age peers put together in a room for 7 hours? My homeschool kid deals with the world all day. She is 9 and volunteers at 2 places, an animal shelter and for an at risk toddler group. She goes and does my banking with me every Monday, we go to the library every Wednesday, she went to summer camp on a farm, she has been to numerous local government meetings, etc. She is dealing with the real world every day. The real world is not a box with same age peers run by a bell.

In France, my wife and I have had to complete a huge intrusive dossier in order to ask permission to homeschool my son, who's 3 years old. Please pray we get a favourable reply. President Macron's government first made schooling compulsory from 3 years old (2018), then essentially banned homeschooling (2022). Now to homeschool you need to prove the existence of a "particular situation" (situation propre").

We got the authorisation!🎉 Nonetheless, the law is a disgrace. If I understand correctly, in Germany homeschooling is also essentially banned. It's one of the remaining laws from the Third Reich!

I was raised a homeschooler. Super conservative, Christian family, etc. All my scientific learning was based off a young earth creationist view , and my social values were molded according to what the Bible had to say (according to my mother's interpretation). As a young teen I was so brainwashed and radicalized (that was because I got deep into politics, and found far-right positions that aligned w my Christianity) that I had entirely given up anything non-Christian. No non Christian music, no non-Christian entertainment, etc. I'll cut the story short here, but homeschooling is a great way to brainwash your children into dangerous idealogies. It's a great way for mentally abusive parents to helicopter over their children, and control everything they know. I WISH I had been Public schooled. I'm in college now and I'm still trying to catch up on all the education I missed because of my homeschooling. I'm not saying it's impossible to do it right, but I think most of the time it's done wrong.

Have you heard or researched the problems with the public schools ?, read up on Los Angeles Unified and the abuses there, read about the cover up of the ms 13 gang in North Hollywood, whatever problems you had, and I don't discount them some public school systems are criminal in the mistreatment and waste of the resources and lives of the children. Your cash and collateral damage to them , nothing else.

@@RickW-HGWT Public schools are less abusive than homeschooling imo, and I agree that gang violence and teachers abusing their power is wrong... But it's worse when done by parents. My mental health would have been so much better in a public school than being stuck at my house for 18 years. Any place can be used to abuse, public schools, homeschools, or churches. My mother has told me about how awful her home was growing up, and how glad she was that she could get out of it to go to school and such. It allowed her to recouperate and gather herself. This hasn't stopped her from messing up my own mental health, but the point stands. Public schools allow a child to find somewhere safe, people who understand them for who they are, etc. This is something I'm only now understanding because I'm finally in college, and am able to be my own person. I'm much better now than I was as a homeschooler.

@@_Jocephus_ I’m sorry you’ve experienced this, but one must NEVER put their personal experience and bias on others with a blanket viewpoint that all similar systems are bad. Sounds like you had very fundamental Christian parents who probably did hold you back academically and socially, however- this is a Catholic channel, and most Catholics don’t believe/teach the bible as literal history that is in opposition to modern science... Sounds like you’re a victim of a little bit of generational trauma, and it’s not an easy cycle to break; but please in no way think that your ‘new found’ knowledge that you’re discovering in college is now going to hold all the answers. I not only attended college, but also worked at one for 5 years - and these institutions are places where society either begins to rebuild, or crumble... most modern colleges and universities are places of rot. It VERY OFTEN happens with people such as yourself that when they FINALLY ESCAPE, and then discover the ‘real world’ for the first time, a lot of partying, drugs, alcohol and sex often happens as they reject their past with extreme measure. I hope your journey is safe, and I hope that you don’t completely reject the values you parents sought for you, but there is likely a journey ahead of you filled with joy, happiness, tears, pain, and a lot of necessary healing. College is typically the place of ‘self discovery’, and I hope you don’t find yourself too lost as you travel down this road. The choice is yours what path you take, but know this - there are bad homeschoolers, and there are great ones... there are bad professors, and there are great ones, there are bad colleges, and there are great ones, there are bad friends, and there are great ones... A bad experience in one area of your life doesn’t mean all is bad, and the choice is really yours now - every choice you make from this time onward will either lead you to greater knowledge about absolute truth, or further from that... don’t travel down the road of despair, and don’t follow just any ‘teacher’ who crosses your path.

@@_Jocephus_ Thank you, it is genuine… I do wish you the best - And for the record, as much as I think homeschooling is a good option in today’s insane world - let’s be clear, it’s absolutely NOT a good idea for EVERY family… it’s only suitable for non-helicopter, non-abusive parents who are both capable of actually educating their children while allowing them to truly get outside of their own home and have friends. I personally know many homeschoolers who have gone on to become doctors and professors, and they still recommend homeschooling (and do it themselves), but I also know people who came out of homeschooled families very messed up and with a completely failed education. But, the same can be said of many people who come out of public schools. So, it really does depend on the individual family situation, and the decision of how to educate ones children really does belong under the parents authority, I just pray that parents will know when they truly are incapable of educating their kids, because some families really should seek other options than this - such as you unfortunately experienced.

There is no diversity of thought in public school, is that a joke? Everyone must align to the same thought process of what is politically accepted for the moment and history is changed to sway them towards the politically driven ideals. You must have graduated from public school and don’t know anything different. If you truly had “diversity of thought”, you would realize that there are diverse methods of educating oneself and their children. People learn in different ways and many thrive in an eclectic educational environment with their family that is not thwarted by bullies and other kids who don’t want to learn and just want to cause trouble.

There is a massive benefit to exposing your kids to diversity in terms of their classmates, as opposed to keeping them contained in a bubble where the only ideas they hear are what their parents teach them. Nobody loves their children as much as their parents. You can't hold that against your own parents. They tried to do what they thought was best for you out of love. College is not the end all see all experience. Theres many paths you can take. I was in the situation where i felt public school system failed me and my mom specifically decided everything i was going to take part in etc.. it took me 6 years to graduate college because of the unpreparedness I had. The belief that world somehow can redeem you is false though and you'll fall victim to more generational trauma. Only way out is to seek Truth no matter how difficult it is.

In fact, in every other part of society we practice honest criticism, especially when we look at a situation where someone was harmed. Murder and manslaughter are two different things, but they each ended in the same result, a tragic death. Obviously I am not equating the murder and bad parenting, it's just a good analogy. What I'm saying is that while we can understand honest intent to do good while it resulted in harm, the person is still guilty of the crime. This entire situation is exactly like the Abraham and Isaac story (with a twist), please understand where I'm going with this: If god hadn't existed, and Abraham had truly thought that he was commanded to sacrifice Isaac, and he had actually killed him, Isaac would be just as much of a victim as if god had actually commanded Abraham to do it. To me, this is a great parable/analogy for homeschooling. While the parent might genuinely believe that they're doing what's right, they still give their child all kinds of problems that will take decades, if not the rest of their life to overcome.

The scenario you gave about kids having to overcome things for decades is literally no different than the problems bring created in our public school system today. Its why this homeschooling conversation is even happening and for many i think they are wanting to do it well realizing the problems with homeschooling as its been.
