You're wrong about Final Fantasy. It has that name because the creator Hironobu Sakaguchi wasn't having any luck with game creation. He named it Final Fantasy because it was his last try at game creation. His final try. I love ya Sage, but get your facts right. Final Fantasy has absolutely NOTHING to do with Tolkien.
@fgdj20005 жыл бұрын
Kostika D Weeeeell, the first part is true, but the last part not entirely. It was initially based off of European medieval fantasy themes, which were largely influenced by Tolkien in their modern appearance. Many early rpgs, Japanese or western, were based on the fantasy genre as it was „created“ by Tolkien. But I guess it is a stretch to say it was based on Tolkien. So, yeah. Get your facts straight, people ;)
@naheemquattlebaum22675 жыл бұрын
@@fgdj2000 Actually Final Fantasy was mostly inspired by Dungeons & Dragons which in turn was inspired by Tolkien. The concept of HP, leveling up, and classes? That's all Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. Straight facts. :) very Jungian when you think about it.

I think the main takeaway from this is that a lot of critics/analysists in the US should stop looking at Japanese media as an inherently *weird* medium (which is pretty othering and orientalist). The comparison between Kingdom Hearts' sentimentality and Paddington's is perfect. Melodrama is *just fine* when it's Sam and Frodo in a volcano, but the drawn-out sentimentality of Naruto and Sasuke is somehow *so weird* even though people who've read Naruto have seen it evolve page-by-page in a series every bit as long and involving as LotR. Initial D making intense drama out of drift racing is over-the-top and silly, but Fast and the Furious is *applauded* for embracing it while throwing in scenes of Vin Diesel fighting a guy with a pair of giant wrenches as swords--Initial D plays its dramatic racing *straight* and isn't afforded that kind of respect. People would rather watch Pacific Rim and enjoy its "goofiness" instead of the countless mecha anime that inspired it because whoa, Getter Robo looks *weird*, or Mazinger shooting lasers out of its chest fins *can't be taken seriously*. I'm not arguing that Japanese media is inherently better, but once you stop looking at Japanese media as *foreign* and get over the cultural differences, you realize that the emotional beats aren't all that different and you were just getting caught up over how *silly* and *weird* the titles are or that the main character has like nine hair colors at once.

Tetsuya Nomura is a surprisingly thoughtful and deeply emotional writer. Obviously fights depression and very likely adores his friends. The games he's directed always focus around loss, becoming a memory, or fading to darkness. Usually lonely isolated or tragic people forced into a world of darkness with a huge emphasis on friends being the light. I liked his ideas for kh and ffxv, still don't think they're all masterpieces,buuut parts of them are amazing. Just need a cowriter to help funnel those ideas into what I feel will eventually be a masterpiece.

To clarify the Heartless Nobody naming scheme, its down to the people who named them. The Heartless were named "Heartless" by Xehanort, because Pureblood Heartless (solid black with yellow eyes) are manifestations of pure darkness that never had an original self, that seek out hearts on instinct because they lack them. Artificial Heartless are the ones that are the Darkness inside a person made manifest and consume their Heart. Nobodies are named "Nobodies" because to paraphrase Ansem the Wise, they "are nobody". By the rules of reality in Kingdom Hearts, they should not exist and thus are "Nothingness" made real. So they are nothing and thus Nobody.

The timeline also is still pretty linear as it only flows backwards or forwards yet a lot of us are pretty allergic to time that doesn't just move forward. It was something I loved about the series, just being a fantastical adventure against a villain who didn't want to move on and it was great.

I just found out about this channel, and even if this video is almost three years old, please just let me say, thank you. I found out about Kingdom Hearts a few years back while browsing the Disney wiki and decided to give it a try. I thought it was just going to be a fun and lighthearted game with characters from my childhood, but in just the first few hours of the first game, I was already captivated by the original characters, their relationships and the universe they lived in. The more games I experienced, the more fascinated by the series I became. Each new contrivance and crazy reveal made me love the story more and more. Though I don’t hide that I love the series, I was (and still kind of am) nervous, and even ashamed to openly defend it. So many people just talked about how “the story makes no sense”, or “it’s badly written”, or that “it takes itself too seriously”. Even though I disagree, sometimes I can’t help but think that maybe they’re right. Maybe this story really is bad. Everyone else says it is. But I still like it, and not in a “it’s so bad it’s fun” kinda way. I’ve shed tears for these characters, have dedicated weeks to writing fanfic about them, read about the lore for hours. I think it’s good. But everyone else seems to think it isn’t. Maybe there is something wrong with me. In which case, how good of a writer can I be if I love something so many people say is bad? When these thoughts come, all I can do is tell myself that just because some people don’t like the series, doesn’t mean I can’t. When they say the story makes no sense, I think about how the only people that say so are people that don’t know the first thing about said story. When they say the story takes itself too seriously, I think “why shouldn’t it?” Because really, why shouldn’t a story take itself seriously and tells its story in a meaningful way just because it’s absurd and ridiculous? Why can’t I enjoy and appreciate the writing just because it’s unusual? So thank you Patrick (H) Willems and Just Write for making this video. You have no idea how great it felt to have two people that know more about all this stuff of writing and storytelling than you tell you that this series is genuinely great despite its silliness and unusual nature, that there’s nothing wrong in loving it, and there’s nothing wrong with me for loving it. Really, thank you guys so much.

Even the "Nostalgia Bait" has purpose. The very first World you're likely to go to is Wonderland, which is all about a young child leaving their home and going to a bizarre new world. Alice and Sora are analogous. SPOILERS for the rest of the series. In KH II many worlds have a character in disguise, pretending to be something or someone they're not - like Mulan and Jack Skellington and a bit of Beast - or are cursed with a dreadful appearance - like Jack Sparrow and, again, Beast. This is similar to Riku's fate looking like Ansem. In KHIII the Worlds deal with Death and coping with it, being separated from your loved ones by different worlds and the power of love. This is all to set up Sora's fate. His brushes with death. How he deals with Kairi's "death" and how he uses the Power of Love to save her and the others, but by doing so he fades away.

Take a look at this tiny place. To the heart seeking freedom, this island is a prison surrounded by water. And so this boy sought out to escape from his prison. he sought a way to cross over into other Worlds, and he opened his heart to Darkness. All worlds begin in Darkness, and all so end. The heart is no different. Darkness sprouts within it, it grows, consumes it. Such is its nature. In the end, every heart returns to the Darkness whence it came. Ansem. I've played the first game so many times I've memorized this monologue.

I don't love KH as a series; I think I lack the necessary nostalgia to power through all the Disney worlds (my parents didn't let me watch Disney movies as a kid). That said, I do actually quite like 358/2 Days, specifically; that game got to me emotionally in a way none of the others have.

Anyone else expected them to cut to three weeks later when he's fighting Riku? "There's no way you're taking Kairi's heart!!" "What do you mean I can't skip cutscenes?? I've watched this five times already! Argh!"

Kingdom Hearts is the type of series that you play as a kid and you absolutely love, then when you think back on it as an adult you're not really sure whether it's this incredible masterpiece or complete ass but you do know that you still absolutely love it.

He was on the money with that rebuke that Kingdom Hearts is merely nostalgia bait. So many Final Fantasy fans use that argument as to why they think so little of the Kingdom Hearts series, yet by doing so shows they are hypocrites because what do you call the Final Fantasy VII Remake if not a glorified nostalgia bait? What do you call the Final Fantasy that every final fantasy fan loves (Final Fantasy IX) if not nostalgia bait? Nostalgia bait is not always a bad thing, it can be great.
@ronni3darko5 жыл бұрын
I think in the case for the FF7 Remake, they are trying to reach out more towards new comers. I found the story and gameplay of the first game far more entertaining than the disney worlds themselves.
@ktownshutdown213 жыл бұрын
The games are at their best when they can take the Disney characters and present them within a new context yet is still true to who they are. I think KH1 does it more effectively than some of the other games, but they still have their moments too.

Sora is such a dum-dum because it makes for good excuses to engage in exposition, without demanding the audience grasp all the info comprehensively since the Main Character doesn't necessarily. It also makes for some cool themes about finding mastery and without proficiency and some other stuff. The titles can get silly sounding, but are always really thematic in a compelling way once you're informed of the meaning behind them (even if more literal titles like "The year shared by two" or "together while apart" flow more elegantly to the english language).
