I have been a triathlete for 38 years now, competing in all distances, always watching the Hawaii broadcast on the indoor bike and treadmill, and I have never had goosebumps during the final run before. Thank you for that! I have to admit that I was worried that he might overdo it. But experience, especially in Hawaii, is enormously helpful. Patrick Lange, that was extremely impressive! I had also hoped for his victory beforehand and thought it was quite possible. By the way, I have been a huge fan of Breakfast with Bob from the start. So a big thank you to Bob too! Definitely the most fun and fastest Kona have eve watched.Being media at Kona for 8 years In the past, have never had as much fun or laughed so hard with the commentary. This group of pros gave it their all and even with some risky moves , probaly gained some future Kona experience. The best was seing the the pro' s duck their head into the ice water buckets at aid station and Patrick grab an entire jug of water to pour on his head.So entertaining and spectacular at same time.Amazing interview!!

The GOAT of what… Ironman? I would say he is the best Ironman athlete of the last 10 years. Outside of that you’re reaching. Jan Frodeno, Craig Alexander, Peter Reid, Mark Allen and Dave Scott are all unbelievably great, and easily on par or better than Lange. That being said he had a spectacular race.

Funny how that works when the natural vo2 sinks a lot from 30 til 40
@SeanStephensen29 күн бұрын
@@pal_lokomotivet2679 vo2 is one of many, many factors that could change an ironman time by half an hour. As Lange's performance has improved, so has the performance of the entire field. The same year Lange went sub-8, he wasn't alone. Now that he goes 7:35, 10 other athletes are also going sub-8. Course conditions, global developments in gear/training, and group dynamics are clearly playing a huge impact here.
@molochz29 күн бұрын
@pal_lokomotivet2679 VO2 Max doesn't matter as much as you think in long distance endurance sports. Lots of world champion marathon runners don't care about VO2 Max and don't train it at all. Your threshold pace and heartrate are way more important for this distance.
@davidhecker8329 күн бұрын
It's also a lot about efficiency and other parameters than just Vo2max. Heard in an interview that Frodeno's Vo2max was in the low 70s while KB's is in the high 90s and still both had similar Ironman times.

I have to admit that even as a German, I didn't believe that Patrick could win. Basically, everyone was expecting the big three: Kristian, Magnus and Sam. Personally, I had already assumed that Patrick could perhaps finish 5th if the race went very well. He seemed quite “grown up”, especially in the international interviews, which is not always easy in a foreign language. But he came across as very calm and relaxed. I wasn't really surprised by the run - we've seen that from him before. But the swim, wth - suddenly right at the front, wow! And then the bike. Everyone destroyed themselves, except for a few. Patrick and basically Cam Wurff and a few others. Only a few really ran at a normal level in the suddenly brutally hot and humid conditions. Magnus, of course, was impressive, as he basically just had a damn high standing gas at the end. Really impressive. But of course Patrick's running was the most impressive. It sometimes looked as if an M30 athlete was running against M60-M65. Absolutely impressive speed, surreally fast. But it has to be said: Patrick has often shown that he can be extremely fast in these conditions. The victory was absolutely deserved, because the cycling was brutal for him too. If you want to deprive all the riders in the large bike group of their potential victory, there's not much left; that's why I find the discussions superfluous, especially in this race. The level was simply so close that you could only change that with 20 m gaps at most. If at all. The Hawaii of the last few years never felt windy - except in the weeks before the race. So I can only offer my sincere congratulations and thank Bob for the great in-depth and detailed interviews!

@nikolast966328 күн бұрын
Well it’s always top 3. So why an exception here? Cam Wurf also never got an invite post race when he smashed the bike record in 2017/ 2018? And as much I enjoyed Laidlow on the bike - as said before it is a triathlon, it’s about the overall result. So personally I would find eg Cam Wurf or Leon Chevalier just as interesting
@SeanStephensen28 күн бұрын
@@nikolast9663 You're right, lots of great stories that didn't pan out into podium success - why not showcase them? Why limit this to just the top 3 finishers? There are so many other key players from the race that I'd love to hear from.

They say Kona is different, but if we look at the Nice 2023 results, excluding Sam L., the order is the same. Nice 2023 1. Sam Laidlow (FRA) - 8:06:22 2. Patrick Lange (GER) - 8:10:17 3. Magnus Ditlev (DEN) - 8:11:43 4. Rudy von Berg (USA) - 8:12:57 5. Leon Chevalier (FRA) - 8:15:57 Kona 2024 1. Patrick Lange (GER) - 7:35:53 (47:09 / 4:06:22 / 2:37:34) 2. Magnus Ditlev (DEN) - 7:43:39 (48:18 / 4:02:15 / 2:46:10) 3. Rudy von Berg (USA) - 7:46:00 (47:18 / 4:05:49 / 2:48:11) 4. Leon Chevalier (FRA) - 7:46:54 (50:43 / 4:01:38 / 2:49:56)

Limits of human performance on the swim and bike Cam Wurf is a world tour pro not winning the bike. The swim is 10%slower than Olympic specialist open water swimmers but running is 16%slower than specialist runners the meat on the bone is only on the run new athletes will come along who can run 2h17 during Ironman its incoming but not this crop of athletes. They all too slow on run.
