this is the first video of yours i've watched and it's pretty good, but i have some tips if you'd like them: -the stub drills are really only meant for starting accurate holes to then be drilled with proper drill bits. you don't want to use it like a normal drill. -you can push a ball bearing up against work held in the chuck to help reduce your total runout. an easy way is to mount the ball bearing on a piece of steel that fits in the tool holder. there are lots of videos on YT about this. -run the lathe at the lowest speed it'll go without chattering. titanium likes lower cutting speeds. copper doesn't really care either way because it's soft. although be wary of how much you're loading the tool. it is easier to overload the tool on slow speeds, check that with a spring pass (doing a second pass without changing the depth of cut) -you're wasting a lot of money on tooling by using the wrong tools, or using tools wrong. you'd save a lot of money in the long run calling up sandvik or whoever and straight up asking what the best carbide drill for hogging out the center would be. i wager it would just be a regular carbide drill bit run at a low speed. -instead of a belt sander, try a nice coarse aluminum oxide grinding wheel and get it nice and clogged up with candle wax. run it at a low speed. titanium needs low cutting/grinding speeds, and the wax is for the copper. anyways, cool channel and cool rings.
@PatrickAdairDesigns7 жыл бұрын
SuperAWaC wow those are all super helpful tips. Thanks for taking the time to share them!
@ractorc917 жыл бұрын
Yep, some good tips there. I would say keep the belt sander but buy some different belts for it. Look on specialist websites. The aluminium oxide ones are only really good for wood, I would go for ceramic if I was grinding titanium at all.
@tissuepaper99627 жыл бұрын
Patrick Adair Designs One more thing: There's a book called "Machinery's Handbook". It should provide with the correct feeds and speeds for a lot of the materials you work with. Obviously sometimes you work with really exotic materials that probably aren't included, but overall it should be really helpful to get really good surface finish.

How about you make a Superconductor ring and dip it in that black stuff for just a few hours until the titanium is darkened and slightly above the copper. Then slowly heat the ring... Because copper gets hotter faster than the titanium it will acquire a Rainbow Patina, while hopefully the titanium remains as it is. Use the Rainbow Patina Spray thingy (I forgot the name) and it should be very beautiful and make an attractive contrast with the dark titanium. If you think it might work and I'm not completly crazy give it a try please!

Dude a bit of advice for your drilling, use the Centre drill purely to start the drill and then switch to a carbide tipped drill or evenb just a slot drill you will get hundreds of rings out of a single tool then as centre drills are not designed for drilling deep holes and should really only touch on the chamfered section. also you wont need to flip it which helps with hole eccentricity and allows a single cut saving you time :-) Cool ring though
@benfits87687 жыл бұрын
also cut the material straight so you dont have to spend hours sanding it round lol.
@ryszardbargiel72567 жыл бұрын
There is a reason it was cut at an angle. It would not have produced the same look if cut perpendicular.
@benfits87687 жыл бұрын
ok fair enough i see your point, in that case there are at least 3 ways he could of machined it to fit in the lathe instead of grinding it round.I laughed so hard when he did that hahaha. Handy man machining lol. But it looks like hes having a fun time with it and thats the main thing.

Firstly, awesome ring! Secondly, PLEASE for the love of machinists USE CUTTING FLUID!!! Like constantly. You won't damage your bandsaw, drills, and carbide cutting tips nearly as fast. Cutting fluid helps dissipate the extreme heat that damages cutting tools when machining hard metals. :)

What's a superconductor ring? I won't get electrocuted if lightning strike? +5 shock resistance
@springbreeze79607 жыл бұрын
coldheart5791 no, conductor is good medium for electric, so if its a super conduncter you wouldnt get resistance against lightning, isntead it will amplify the lightning, i guess 10% amplified damage to you so...
@terminatorx89526 жыл бұрын
spring breeze no, it's a super conducter so it will give you the ability to control lightning (Don't wear it in a thunder storm)
@lebafo6 жыл бұрын
Actually, the superconductor properties only display at very very cold temperatures, so don't stand in a vat of liquid nitrogen during a thunderstorm, of course, it won't matter to you much but getting hit by lightening whist being frozen solid might make a mess, I would definitely suggest a closed casket. :P

It is an amazing look but I am confused by your use of the term "superconductor". Are you suggesting this is a superconductor at room temp? A lot of metals are superconductors at very low temps but I have never heard antone refer to lead or tin rings as superconductor rings. Is this term referring to something about the style or process?
@brightbound33093 жыл бұрын
I think it's a rod made to be a super conductor
@miniphoenix54063 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was curious about this too. It's most likely a form of niobium-titanium alloy with copper surrounding for easier cooling. It is certainly a superconductor but only has those properties at 10K so it's not exactly an applicable word here. I guess it's technically true, but unless you plan to cool your ring to 10 Kelvin you aren't going to get it to superconduct lol.

It is made from superconductor cables used for stuff like MRI machines.
