True, but countries under sanctions (limited or not) seem to have a way of limping along anyway. Yes, at the expense of their public/citizenry, but not crippled enough to bring regime change. Iran and Venezula come to mind. I've read that Putin's personal net worth hovers between $.5T and $1T. Talk about "doing better"? I think the next transition will be Putin the fake "President" to the real, and unmasked, dictator he is...except, with nukes and nowhere to run. Last time I checked, Iran and Venezula didn't have nukes.

We dream. But Russians aren't pressuring the government to the extent where any serious shuffles have happened yet. There's been 8 murdered of oligarchs according to CNN. Some are murder-suicides according to outside sources (like Spanish police). But it's clearly not just coincidence. I'm sure the Russian government is vile enough that some of these people can convince themselves that murder suicide is a good choice. But on the other hand there's Mikhail Watfords wife and children who are fine still despite him dying by hanging in the garage.

As a Russian living in Europe I'm impressed by the quality of your research and data. A couple of notes : - The Central Bank has since rolled back the interest rate and capital controls but the ruble doesn't drop much and it's actually a problem for Russian economy. All the government expenses are in rubles, but revenue from oil&gas comes in foreign currency. So strong ruble means less revenue for the budget. - A deterioration of living standards is unlikely to cause unrest as Putin spent the last 10 years actively destroying opposition and civil liberties. People that have lost their jobs are more likely to join the Wagner mercenaries for money than to rebel. If there is coup, it will come from within the ruling class.

Look at the 300 million in lockdown in Moaist China, people are starved in their homes, not one city rioting, not a single American sanction there. Interesting. The biggest problem with this analysis is the reliance on the Yale report. For a thorough critique of the Yale report, check the Intellinews invester site's breakdown of said report.

@@gamal01 It says, "The Yale paper is at one end of the spectrum arguing Russia’s economy has been crushed, whereas at the other end pundits point to the huge amounts of cash flowing into Russia’s coffers and the significant sanctions leakage caused by Russia’s partners in the rest of the world refusing to adopt the sanctions regime. There is plenty of evidence to support both sides of the argument."

@@gamal01 it is apparently spot on, judging from all the bots stating how unreliable it is.

What a doom and gloom picture you have painted of Russia. I will bet that Russia will come out of this economic sanction . Sanctions as an economic tool is not going to work... The sanctions on Iran, North Korea, Venezuela did not work, did it? Agreed, the economic of these small poor countries did not grow rapidly....but they are still surviving the sanctions. Russia is a huge country with vast rich mineral and food resources. If dirt poor North Korea can beat the sanction, Russia certainly can.

The sanctions did work. Those countries that you nentioned are increasingly impoverished a d their gdp growth is incredibly low. Lower than developed countries. That is the intention of sanctions. And it worked

Hey Patrick. Thanks for the video, it's great to see the Ukraine conflict from an economic perspective. I'm wondering if you could do a vid on Brexit? I'm getting mixed reporting about its economic effects seemingly based on whether the news sites are ideologically right or left.
