In the novel "Patriot Games", the ambush of Cathy and Sally Ryan occurs on westbound US Highway 50 on the Severn River Bridge near Annapolis, Maryland. Jack Ryan is not on the highway at the time, but rather is teaching a class at the US Naval Academy. This scene was filmed on the yet to be opened eastbound Interstate 105 in Southern California near LAX airport. You can see the AT&T building and Los Angeles Times building in the background.

It annoys me, this scene, in that Sean's attempt is so amateurish, hanging off a seat belt waving his gun about. The book depicted a calm, methodical hit with a gun on a tripod fixed in the van, allowing him to pour out a steady stream of fire. The only thing that saves Cathy's life is that she sees him at the last second and slams on the brakes, throwing off his aim just a fraction. Also, they leave out the unmarked State Trooper vehicle nearby that witnesses the whole thing and gives chase, only to be shot and killed when the terrorists realise they're being followed.

The one problem I had with this other-wise great film. @1:16, with a HUGE window of time to make a move, you mean to tell me that she couldn't downshift and ride the shoulder on the left? She's a surgeon, making split-sec decisions under pressure is part of the job and she's also got her daughter in the car with her. Would've been more credible if Sean Bean had at least shot the tires. She's in a 911 Carerra with a 5 1/2 second 0-60 time vs Mr. Bean's 20 sec to 60 Ford Econovan. The 911 is a drivers car and this lady clearly can't drive (hell, might even be a bad doc too if she performs like this under the gun) lol. Maybe she needs to take lessons from her husband's twin, Dr. Kimble...

I’m watching the movie now, and seeing this scene for the first time, I was like, “it’s a car designed for speed and maneuvering, and even braking at high speeds. How could she fail so miserably? lol” I blamed the mother for the daughters injuries. Sean Bean fired and caused panic, but driving a Porsche and she still failed spectacularly…it would’ve been more believable if she was driving a “soccer mom” vehicle, at least surviving the crash would’ve been more believable.
