CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Director of Intelligence Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) squares off with Robert Ritter (Henry Czerny) regarding the authorization of a covert operation.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the third film based on Tom Clancy's high-tech espionage potboilers starring CIA deputy director Jack Ryan. Harrison Ford, returning to the Ryan role after his first go-round in 1992's Patriot Games, is assigned to a delicate anti-drug investigation after a close friend of the President (a Reaganesque Donald Moffat) is murdered by a Colombian drug cartel. When Ryan discovers that the President's wealthy friend was in league with the cartel, the President's devious national security adviser (Harris Yulin) and an ambitious CIA deputy director (Henry Czerny) send a secret paramilitary force into Colombia to wipe out the drug lords. The force is captured and then abandoned by the President's lackeys. It falls to Ryan to enter Colombia and rescue them, aided only by a renegade operative named Clark (Willem Dafoe), with both his life and career on the line.

Henry Czerny deserved to be in many more movies. Totally underrated. He is memorable in every character role, large or small. Actors like Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise etc are able, in part, to reach certain character levels in scenes with Henry because of his brilliance in his role as a counterpoint.

The law has nothing to do with morality, which is really unfortunate. The law is a rigid set of objective declarations which must be followed or else you will be punished severely. At 1:55, Jack should have taken off with that "authorization letter" and ran out the friggin door!!! Then, we would have seen an awesome car chase scene between two middle-aged bureaucrats in a couple of black sedans, in Washington D.C. during the middle of rush hour traffic. At the end of the car chase, imagine Jack driving onto a bridge overlooking the Potomac river. He stops his car on the bridge, and everyone starts honking at him to "GTFO the way!" Ritter stops his car about 35-45 feet away (give or take), and he immediately gets out of his car. Meanwhile, Jack sits in his car quickly folding up that authorization letter into the shape of a paper airplane ("C'mon, baby. C'mon!" he mumbles). Then, he gets out of his car and locks eyes with Ritter (who's still trying to figure out what the hell Jack's trying to do). Ritter is about to yell out something cheesy/arrogant (like any movie bad-guy would) until he sees that Jack has that damned authorization letter folded up into the shape of a paper airplane ("No way! He wouldn't..." he thinks), and then he starts rushing towards Jack. Then, Jack yells sadistically, "HEY RITTER!" (two-second pause, as Ritter freezes to a hault) "RECOLLECT THIS, BITCH!!!" and tosses that shit off of the bridge into the Potomac river. Imagine Ritter falling to his knees [in slow motion] yelling at Jack, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" Come on, Clancy!!!! Get creative!!!!

I saw this in a movie it's bad guy got captured there's no way out for their get ready to put them to death when they let him to the execution chamber the warden said you have any final word is a yeah everybody in this room including the it's over there in the curtain rooms that witness my execution are going to die from the moment my heart expires from this lethal cocktail mix everybody's going to die and I mean everybody the guards laugh the warden is kind of Gremlins in his teeth and knew that this guy that's been in his prison for 7 years don't make idle threats the FBI agents the FBI agent that helped captains in the ass Amelia gets on a f****** cell phone start making calls getting buttons pushed the find out what the hell he meant by that so the agent-in-charge try to go to the governor's office to get the execution stop the governor said I'm not stopping his execution the agents tell him that they got information that there might be an immediate danger once the guy is put down the government said no excuses going for the red phone rings to the warden at the execution chamber in the warden's hesitant to pick it up but he picks it up the governor said go ahead Friday m*********** and the deed is done everybody release the guy was just making idle threats nothing was done and then 3 minutes after doctor pronounce the guy dead everybody start getting text messages of their family members with a live video stream with guns pointed to their heads somewhere at a remote location in the messages on their phones and smartphones says James Jackson meant what he said in the screen goes black that's when everybody realize that he met with the f****** said even in death he struck back.

Brandon Daniels or Jack stops at the Washington Post and the guy in the black suit done grabs him and he immediately shoots it into the editor's office there's a graph opens it up it almost has a heart attack and gets on the phone 10 everybody stop the presses now damn it we got an exclusive and we got the proof to back it up so he calls all his senior into the office and that's when the president is on the phone talking to Ritter go ahead and do it a drone flies over head into the Washington Post Office. Killing everybody later that night the president gets on TV and talks about how sacrifice has to be made that Al-Qaeda terrorists infiltrated the US Air Force and hijacked a drone and fight it off into the Washington Post Office giving a press interview blah blah blah in the president with the lie that he just told make no mistake we will find those responsible and bring Justice to those that perpetrators horrendous at blah blah in the meantime in the closing of the movie Jack Ryan is strapped down on the stretcher being willing to a government medical facility at an unknown location with a gag in his mouth and it really is standing over him that Larry look hey Jack it's all about being great and there's a orderly stand out with a hypodermic syringe and pushing into Jack's net and Jack face into unconsciousness locked in a sale foaming at the mouth in a straight jacket. And really takes one look at it before the oil is still people and says hey Jack thank you for your sacrifice for your country and in order they slammed the pee hole shut in the movie face and it ends

I do love the last word. Calling out. "Grey! The world is Grey, Jack!" It doesnt sound smug. Or condescending, or remourseful or consoling or even at attempt to recruit. It sounds desperate. Hes saying it to himself.

Yes. I remember reading about him in Without Remorse, but then I remember seeing him in this movie and he looks younger. In the book I'm guessing he was older. The same with John Clark.

The thing is with Ritter he is really only wrong when he left the SpecOps troops to die. There's no excuse for that. In the characters though Ryan is an idealist, where Ritter is a realist.

If I were in Ritter's position, I would've pulled a "Mac" and just ate the paper that Ryan showed him. If I were in Ryan's shoes, I would've eaten the pardon paper that Ritter showed him. Good thing I didn't write this chapter/scene because it would've just been a lot of awkward eating of papers and someone walking into the room to see both of them stuffing paper in their mouths, thinking WTF!

What's interesting is that Ritter will insist on not doing anything until getting permission as well as say the situation's too complicated to actually make a straightforward good or bad decision, but then he'll have a compound with families bombed and try to have a whistleblower executed as well once he believes he had free reign to do so. Goes to show that someone in authority could do anything once they have the power to think they won't be punished for it. It's a cold, brutal thing to do-as well as think too.

When the putz reads his letter and says "You don't happen to have one of these, do you, Jack?" Ford should have snatched it out of his hands, ripped it to shreds and then said, "No. And now neither do you."

only one problem with this scene: it's not in the book. In the book, Ryan doesn't confront Ritter until the very end, by which time Ritter has had an attack of the conscience and has taken steps to aid Ryan in his efforts to get the Marines back Stateside. Also, Ritter is portrayed in a much better light in the novel, as a man who is not the villain, but is simply caught between what he considers his duty to his country and some moral and ethical conundrums.
