It's awfully hard to hit something when the radar is placed behind a hill on a downslope where it has almost no line of sight to the target. Remember If you cant see the radar from the missile, the radar can't see you. (in game) 17:36
@MitsukiTakeda

Yup. Radars that are low like that should be put on the highest point of the hill with the missiles lower if possible. I'm sure if the radar were on the top of the hill versus downsloped, it would have had a better chance at getting a solution on the ground huggers.

The key to intercepting low-flying targets is to raise your radar. In this case you placed the radar trucks such that there was a low hill and the ship blocking much of the view in the direction of the attack.

It’s incredible how much CH has added to DCS. However, there are a few things that don’t seem right about this Patriot. I’m highly dubious about the claim that Patriot can only track 9 targets. Especially in case of launching the PAC-3 MSE, which has its own radar in the missile. It’s important to remember that the Patriot has been constantly upgraded for the last ~40 years (mostly through software updates but hardware has also received quite a lot of changes while retaining the same designation. Most often the changes were small but sometimes the upgrades completely reoriented the system towards different threats, i.e. in late 90’s or early 00’s the scan pattern of the radar was changed through a software upgrade to be better suited against TBMs at the cost of somewhat worse results against airplanes) so some limitations that might have existed 20 years ago may no longer exist today. It’s also important to remember that the AN/MPQ-53 was the first Patriot radar and the AN/MPQ-65 was already a huge upgrade in capabilities, which was made even greater by the AN/MPQ-65A. It also seems that the AN/MPQ-65A radar’s model is wrong. To the best of my knowledge, the A version’s array doesn’t look like its predecessor at all-AN/MPQ-65’s PESA array is shaped more or less like a circle viewing from the front, like the one in DCS, while the MPQ-65A’s AESA has a larger area and it’s shaped like a rectangle, viewing from the front (the upgrade from 65 to 65A used mostly the same vehicle but the old array was taken off and the new one was mounted in its place + the two smaller arrays were added to give Patriot the ability to look behind the radar but at a decreased range).

I agree, i think that the PAC-3 MSE was underated in this simulation, but also at the same time, it makes up for it being highly overated in others. But PAC-3 MSE was specifically designed to defeat SRBMs/MRBMs and was also designed to be effective against cruise missiles aswell as IRBMS and a relatively capable defense against ICBMs. Its a terminal phase BMD system, i dont think all of the SCUDs would have been intercepted, as the Patriot simply wouldnt have fired at the 2 SCUDs that missed, but i also think it would have been a bit more effective against the 16 YJ-21s, obviously not a 100% PK, as that many missiles at the speeds they were travelling at would simply overwhelm the Patriot and its radar, but i think it wouldve been more succesful than it was, especially given the AoA of the missiles. But against the ground skimming cuise missiles, that was very accurate, and even if the radar had LOS i doubt it wouldve made a huge difference given the PAC-3 MSEs booster. I hope they find away of making the AI follow the usual AD doctrine, which is 2 missiles per target (usually the case).

Some other cool things for CurrentHill to add would be the American C-RAM system (LPWS), or maybe one of the newer western SHORAD systems, like the ADATS or the American M-SHORAD with the newest version of the Stinger (or the newest Stinger on its own), or maybe one of the never adopted systems which seem pretty cool, like the LAV-AD.

Question for Cap and CH: Would you get a different result if the Patriot systems were networked with American AWACS? (I strongly suspect they would be, and this might explain why American Patriots don't need a giant boom to mount their radars on, because Americans assume control of the skies over the Patriots). You might also assume they would be networked with F-35s. Question 2: What would happen if F-35s supported the Patriots by launching AIM-260s at some of the incoming supersonic and hypersonic Chinese missiles? (It's good to be the king of the skies). What if we also had some little drones with sidewinders loitering around the area?

@@MaxIsStrange1 C-RAM is coming to the core game via ED, ADATS never entered service (also that was 20 years ago so definitely not new). The only real modern American SHORAD is the M-SHORAD Stryker and thats basically just a humvee avenger with a radar.

One of the things, with this kind of defense, is it wouldn't just be the patriots. With this type of system, you have a layered system, so to engage the faster, lower flying missiles, you'd also have some C-RAM defenses scattered around to engage anything that the patriot system can't. It would be interesting to run this simulation with those present as well and see the overall effective nature of the faster chinese missiles.

Hey Cap. The SCUD's were also fired at and hit Riyadh. The place I was living at during the build-up to the first Gulf War was on what we called Government Street. Lots of government buildings. During the war I was lucky enough to be back in blighty but some of my fellow workers remained in the city. One of the SCUD's hit a government building across the road from where we all lived, just as someone was coming in through the large glass doors, which shattered. I have a picture of Patriots (launched from near the runway at Riyadh air base) destroying a SCUD over the city at night at 21:29 on the 24th February over Solomania. This was one area we used to go for 'posh' shopping. Watches, stereo's etc, cheaper. The first Patriot destroyed the SCUD and the second Patriot was self destructed later to cause less damage from debris. I think the Pac-3 are better. What a machine CH is, making all these Mods.

Ive seen this instance in a video on youtube, and its exactly why 2 missiles are fired per target, the Patriot does misfire often, but it makes up for with a high PK per missile. Take Ukraine for example, 12-14 incoming missiles fired, 32 Patriot missiles fired, we have evidence of one catastrophic failiure. I forget how many failed launches, but if my memory serves me correctly, there were about 3ish. So 4 of the 32 failed, how been shown to fail, and of the remaining 28, they intercepted 12 missiles (they didnt intercept 2 because we have video evidence of likely 2 Kinzhals hitting near the Patriot site, one missed the site and the other hit near a Patriot launcher i believe). So thats 28 for 12 -13 missiles (the Kinzhal that missed may have been deflected by the Patriot), so for the most part 2 per missile and for atleast 2 missiles and at most 4 missiles, 3 CRIs (or standard PAC-3s) so its hard to judge PK, but based off of this it seems pretty good, and a similar PK to the instance that your describing.

CH really brings a lot to this channel. Although ( I have pointed out this again in the past ) I have the feeling you guys have seriously nerfed the YJ21 to unrealistic levels. Here it was barely going mach 3 when it hit the target which is way too low. Stated terminal speed is mach 10 which, I get it, may be too much and you don't feel it is realistic to model it as advertised but something in the area of mach 5-6 terminal speed would be fair.

A question: Does DSC actually look at a track like the scud and identify it as a ballistic approach and not just a "current speed and heading" if not that could account for the PAC3 going to high, as it did not predict it would go in a ballistic arc. I do belive modern systems take this into account, that if they see a ballistic approach they will not do a standard "heading and speed" track but predict the curve on what part of that curve they should intercept.

Modern systems can tell the speed, altitude aswell as size and trajectory of the target, so it would be able to understand whether its whether its a fixed/rotary wing aircraft, or a cruise or ballistic missile. Also, the missiles are guided by active seekers (active radars) and so can detect course variations themselves.

This was a great video, GR. But hypersonic missiles do not slow down in their terminal phase. That is why everybody and their mother sees them as both a big threat and a must-have. For future naval battles, you should up the number of 0-55s to eight in order to get more hypersonic missile shooters on the board and give the Russian Gorshkov class frigates the Zircon hypersonic anti-ship cruise missiles which they do carry IRL.
@jonathanpfeffer3716
@jonathanpfeffer3716 Жыл бұрын
They actually would have to do that against certain target profiles. Against non-fixed targets or fixed targets that demand high degrees of precision (thus necessitating SAR mapping) any missile traveling at hypersonic speeds needs to do a pull up maneuver to rid itself of the plasma sheathe that forms at hypersonic speeds in-atmosphere, since that blocks radio signals. The only cases where this is not necessary is if 1: the target is fixed and does not demand precision, thus only INS/GPS guidance is necessary. 2: It is a supersonic flight hypersonic terminal flight weapon, none of which exist in service currently. 3: it is being fed targeting information from other platforms via datalink.

In 1990s, the Israelis complained that the hit probability of Patriot against Scud missiles was unexpectedly low. Also, they claimed that there were occasions when a missile would be hit more than once and it would still reach the target (or close to it, having in mind poor accuracy of Scuds). That is why they Gave up on Patriot and started developing their own version called Arrow, I think... Now, Americans claim the identified the problems and solved them in the meantime, but let's be honest... Americans were never much into SAMs and rely more on airforce. Now, with more missile threats they should get better at it.

I always wondered of the F111 could have delivered tac nucs or other bombs on major Sovial Targets without being seen. They had a map of earth program/radar system. Could they have evaded Soviets Radar and delivered? And/Or what would have happened in Libia if they know we were coming? (More interested in Soviets battle)

Interesting point about the height of radars, even the British ground based CAMM SAM’s radars are raised massively above the ground, so it’s not a East vs West doctrine difference. And of course on warships the radars are always on the highest part of the ship. My only guess on the reason is the Americans assume they will have AEW assets in the air 24/7 if they ever properly need patriots

Idiot Biden pulled out of Iron Dome in his first week in office - the tech in that project is critical to near term US capabilities - it's currently the only system that predicts where the aggressor will hit and ignores threats that have a current flight path towards low value targets. Pissing off Israel and pushing cutting-edge western armed Saudi Arabia into the arms of China was great work - well done Joe! I'm sure there will be ASRAAMs, Brimstones, Meteors and link16 modules sitting in Chinese and Russian labs within months - and given they will all be used in common missile applications finding their secrets is a disaster for the west.

That Scud's launch time might be terrible by today's standards, but it was nevertheless a huge leap forward from the V-2. A V-2 rocket took at least an hour to go from parking the missile-cerrier to launching. This was because the V-2 used liquid oxygen as its oxidiser, which couldn't be stored in the missile (it would all boil off in a matter of hours). So let's give credit where it's due. The Scud, of course, had about the same accuracy as a V-2, though . . .

What isn't modelled in DCS (because it's not a sim) is the fog of war created by successfully intercepted missiles. The fragmentation cloud from an intercept will act as chaff cloud for a few seconds - giving other missiles on a similar flight path a clear run where they cannot be tracked by RADAR for perhaps 1-10 critical seconds - or at the very least will interfere with the ability to track them. DCS RADAR sees through these debris clouds as if they are not there.

@@ROTNReaper Ok seems strange that it is places where the individual launchers can block its view against low flying targets. One would think off-setting the radar to get an unhindered view would be beneficial. It should not be that hard in its software to take this offset into its launching calculation.
@ROTNReaper
@ROTNReaper Жыл бұрын
@Steffen Jespersen it doesn't really have anything to do with calculations, and I can't really get more into that and still be unclassified. And normally the launchers are far enough in front of the Radar that it doesn't cause as big of an issue as it would seem.

PAC-3 is very effective against low altitude short to medium range ballistic missiles, such as SCUD missiles. Notice none that counted got through. The ones that did were not a threat and it's likely that PAC-3 calculated its trajectory and determined that they weren't a threat, thereby not wasting any further missiles on them. THAAD is most effective against the Medium and Intermediate range ballistic missiles that fly at altitudes outside of the atmosphere. It can engage targets at over Mach 8 at altitudes of nearly 500,000 feet. It also has a much larger engagement radius.

I have no idea if it's modeled, but I noticed that the radar was behind one of the missile launchers. Its line of sight to the first, low flying missiles appeared to be almost perfectly "blocked". Is that a real issue in game, because it seems that it would be in real life. I would think (and I know nothing about this) that the radar would be placed such that its energy would have an unobstructed view along the threat axis. That may have an effect on the low flying missile scenario. This is way out there quasi-speculation, but there are rumors of radars in the U.S. arsenal that can "see" over the horizon, all very hush-hush. Perhaps that's nonsense. It would explain the low height of the radars, however.

Your placement of the Patriot radars was sub-optimal. For sea skimmers you should have positioned the radars closer to the cliff/ridge instead of inland, which allowed the very low altitude missiles to effectively travel in defilade. Overwhelming an AD battery is standard practice, not a new concept. Hyper-sonic makes the calculations and timings more difficult for AD batteries. As always, the modelling is fantastic. Great work CH !
