Appreciate this informative video because my father served aboard a sister destroyer of the same class, USS Stormes DD 780 which was almost sunk by a kamakaze on May 25, 1945 in the South China Sea. I hope to tour this last and only destroyer of this class on my next trip to the East Coast. My father was 20 years of age at the time. RIP Veteran Father.

@10:59 - I used to repair this same SPS-40 Air Search Radar aboard USS Ponce. It was fun to maintain. It actually used chilled, distilled water to cool the high power amplifier. It had an excellent Moving Target Indicator that was pretty advanced for when it was designed. Thanks for the tour !

My uncle Steve Waite was a plank owner on this ship and later part of the group that helped buy it. The skipper F. Julian Becton kept track with as many crew so they could do this. Later in his career he became the CO of Iowa BB61

There was a Gato sub...think it was the one whose crew were the only ones to invade the Home Islands for a mission...when the boat went up for sale & was missed...the crew declared that they would have bought it had they known. Glad to see this 1 escaped that fate.

1:30 After seeing that description...thought the name was familiar. Well done on the tour. One of these days maybe I'll visit the East coast to see at least one of the WW2's Ol' Sailors in person

Too bad more of these improved 'Fletcher' Class destroyers were not kept for museums. Pre COVID, I had a wonderful conversation with a gentleman that I socialized with for some time. One morning, I watched a documentary on the Laffey's survival against a brutal Kamikaze Attack. Amazing. That afternoon, I ran into my friend who was wearing a WW II Naval Veteran Cap. I Asked him what he served on, and he told me a Destroyer. He paused ... "The Laffey" ... Man, what a conversation we had. Living History. He was WW II. I served - Non-Combat - Army - Viet Nam Era Conflict. Thanks for the Video.

Thanks for the tour Phil. Long ago before she was moved and repaired I happened upon her next to a lay down yard I was delivering a load of pipe to. I didn't know what boat I was looking at until I looked her up. Thankfully she can be explored. I put some pictures of my visit to the USS Kidd over at HLI. She's in a special cradle on the river in baton rouge

Been there twice. First time was spur of moment foe the Fourth of July bash. All three ships and the SUV were there. The Coast Guard cutter was closed because of a fire a couple weeks before. The second time only the Yorktown and the sub were open. I enjoyed the video.

I was on the USS O'brien DD 725 from March 1968 to March 1969 then transferred to the USS Sumner DD 692 on April 1969 to March 1971 when I then left the Navy

Thanks for the tour, sir. IF I can get to Patriots Point... it will probably be a full four day week for me, or even five. I usually get around on a power scooter, but can manage to walk a ways with a cane. Probably a full day to see the USS Laffey alone, sitting on the "ladders" sometimes to rest since it doesn't seem to be a "guided" tour but more at your own pace. And, then three more days or maybe even four just for the USS Yorktown. BUT... it would be worth it. I wonder if they have an "extended visit" pass???

Is the Savannah still at Patriot's Point?
@cjdavis26848 ай бұрын
Unfortunately no, the Savannah was towed away from this museum and the last I had heard she was moored at some River. But she hasn't been at the Patriots point Naval museum for some time there's a coast guard vessel in the spot where she was. The clamagore submarine is also gone, they waited too long to do repairs to it and it was considered by the Navy not to be safe for tours anymore so the clamagore was towed out and sunk to become a reef.

Your intrusive and blocking captions completely ruin your video.
@p.j.c.2.02 жыл бұрын
If the Captions are been Blocked it's because KZbin is Blocking them it's Nothing I've done I can still see and read the Captions so I don't know why they were Blocked when you watched the Video as for the Captions I just typed in some of the Laffey's History I read on Wikipedia.
