I’m a HuGE Donny Hathaway fan. Nearly 75, I came of age listening to this phenomenal artist and human being. I thought this song was appropriate for this pivotal time in History. This iconic song still brings me to tears. 💙💙💙🇱🇷🙏. How appropriate!

This song was written by a friend of Donny’s to encourage him after knowing Donny was suffering from schizophrenia. Apparently Donny cried after hearing the final mix in the recording studio😢.

You are lying. This is not true. It was written for BLACK PEOPLE.

Oh yes sir, you need to explore more Donny. Check out his duets with Roberta Flack, another heavenly voice. Unfortunately he was lost way too soon, age 33.

I first heard Donny back in 2016 and have been a huge fan ever since. His 'Donny Hathaway live' album is one of the best live albums of all time. Donny's live version of A Song For You is stunning, he has the audience completely captivated ❤🇬🇧

Took u 30 seconds to know that Donny was a Soul legend. Died way too soon. Need to check out " I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know " by him. He also has one of the Xmas classics " This Christmas "

You gotta react to his rendition of yesterday. It is the definitive version, in my humble opinion.

From the same album, ""Love, Love. Love" was probably the most commercial track but "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" has been covered by many esteemed artists. This track, though, is segued into on the album by an epic pseudo-classical piece called "I Love The Lord, He Heard My Cry" and I like to listen to them in sequence

Everything Is Everything is one of my favorite records. I first heard of Hathaway when someone asked Quincy Jones who his favorite singer was.

I saw a documentary on Donny and Quincy Jones said he’s only ever known 4 musical geniuses and Donny Hathaway was one of them. High praise

Donny Hathaway is sooooo underrated!! I would recommend love, love, love and i know it's you (both from the same album as this song)! Also I would recommend 'youve got a friend on' his live album! And of course a song for you!!

Patrol Nation, many people think Donny Hathaway wrote the song "Someday We'll All Be Free" about Black Americans and/or the Civil Rights Movement . This isn't true. First, Donny didn't write the lyrics and secondly the song has nothing to do with the Civil Rights Movement or Black Americans in general. It is a song written for and about Donny and what he personally was going through as he fought his demons. On January 13, 1979, Donny Hathaway was found dead on the side walk outside of the Essex House Luxury Hotel in New York City, where he had been living. Since the glass from the window had been carefully removed and there were no signs of struggle, his death was ruled a suicide. The last studio album that he recorded was "Extensions of A Man" in 1973. "Extensions Of A Man" contained the single "Someday We'll All Be Free", which was written by Edward Howard about the mental pain that Hathaway was experiencing. After Hathaway recorded the song, he listened to the play back of the studio cut. Hathaway cried as he listened to the song for the first time. After Hathaway's death, this disclaimer was added to the liner notes of "Extensions of A Man" by Edward Howard: "Donny is no longer here, but the song [Someday We'll All Be Free] gathers momentum as part of his legacy... Donny literally sat in the studio and cried when he heard the playback of his final mix. It's pretty special when an artist can create something that wipes them out." Howard also added: "It was a spiritual thing for me... What was going through my mind at the time was Donny, because Donny was a very troubled person. I hoped that at some point he would be released from all that he was going through. There was nothing I could do but write something that might be encouraging for him.'" "Someday We'll All Be Free" Lyrics: Hang onto the world as it spins, around. Just don't let the spin get you down. Things are moving fast. Hold on tight and you will last. Keep your self-respect your manly pride. Get yourself in gear, Keep your stride. Never mind your fears. Brighter days will soon be here. Take it from me someday we'll all be free Keep on walking tall, hold you head up high. Lay your dreams right up to the sky. Sing your greatest song. And you'll keep, going, going on. Just wait and see someday we'll all be free. Take it from me, someday we'll all be free. Take it from me someday we'll all be free. Take it from me, take it from me, take it from me.

I missed Donny Hathaway by one year of him being one of my professors as a music student at Howard University back in the 70s. He had moved on to venture upon his career as a solo artist. The man has the voice of an angel. You ain't heard nothing yet. I hope you dig deeper into his discography. You should listen to his cover of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", and "A Song for You." Both are straight-up masterpieces. ❤

If only you knew!!! I saw this reaction pop up and decided to listen. I know this song and THAT MAN. He grew up in a neighbor adjacent to mine in Saint Louis. He is of a generation before mine, but my horn instructor went to Vashon high school with him. Gifted, phenomenal, talented, virtuoso pianist, amazing vocalist. His songs will live on forever!!!! YOU NEED TO DO MORE!!! 💗💗💗
