In July of 2022, Global Conservation went on patrol in Belize's Turneffe Atoll with marine wardens from TASA (Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association). Turneffe is the largest atoll in the Mesoamerican Reef and the largest marine reserve in Belize.
This Marine Protected Area or MPA is facing serious threats as the ten-year old TASA implements Global Conservation's Global Park Defense, a test-proven methodology for protecting the world's most vulnerable national parks, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and marine reserves.
Jeff Morgan, Executive Director of Global Conservation is interviewed, along with Dr. Gerardo Ceballos, Co-Founder of Creatures United and Global Conservation Advisory Board member.
TASA Rangers are also interviewed including Valdemar Andrade, Executive Director of TASA. Interviews also include a local community fisherman and Makenna Middleton of the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC). Baby crocodiles are filmed being born and Global Conservation, the CRC and TASA personnel assist the emerging reptiles out of their eggs.
On patrol a fishing boat was boarded and inspected, and violations were discovered. Images of the M2 radar system by Protected Seas of the Anthropocene Institute are shown in use by TASA rangers.
Francisco Asturias of FUNDAECO is a park protection legend in Latin America and is seen scuba diving with Dr. Ceballos and Jeff Morgan inspecting reefs underwater. Asturias is an expert at training young recruits to become rangers in critical habitats under outside pressure from wildlife poaching, illegal fishing, illegal logging, burning and mining.
This conservation short film was shot on location, produced and narrated by W.J. McKay. Additional photography and production assistance by Kyle McKay.
About us
Global Conservation is dedicated to safeguarding our planet's most vital and endangered wilderness areas as wild spaces face unprecedented threats. With poaching, logging, mining, land clearing, and human encroachment on the rise, these pristine habitats are rapidly disappearing. Over the next decade, human activity is projected to consume half of the remaining intact wildlife habitats, endangering iconic species like tigers, primates, bears, lions, elephants, and rhinos. Protected areas are becoming the last refuges for wildlife in developing nations.
As the sole nature conservation organization focused solely on directly funding park protection systems for national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites in developing countries, Global Conservation prioritizes the preservation of these critical ecosystems. We work hand in hand with local and indigenous communities, empowering them as the first line of defense for their ancestral lands. Our flagship program, Global Park Defense, aims to extend "No Cut, No Kill" protection to 25 parks worldwide by 2025. Together with our partners and supporters, we strive to ensure the long-term survival of our planet's most precious natural treasures.
