Thanks for posting Mak! In a couple of weeks we will have a heavy hatch of large mayflies ( Hexagenia Limbata ) on the local lakes. I'll tie up a couple with the extended foam bodies.

This technique is PERFECT for those big lake Hexies. Get some dark gray and dark olive foam, and learn how to do the 2 peice method. With the single peice method like in this video, I like to wrap my foam body in latex strips that I cut myself from rubber medical gloves to make them look a little more realistic and to make them a bit more durable (I am catching big ol smallies with these usually). I usually tie in about ¼" of the tag end foam onto a short shank wide gap dry fly hook, tapering it down half way up the shank, tie in another strip starting where the last segment ends, dubbing noodle to build up the body a bit, furnace badger hackle in the midsection, part the hackle and bring that foam strip up through the middle and tie it in to create a wing case. I tie in whatever wing material I choose into this spot, then a piece of bright pink or orange polypropylene yarn for visibility, if there is room I'll tie in a head out of the remaining foam strip. I use permanent markers to color the body and thorax. I also do all of this with all black with a big white peice of indicator yarn for the wing for when the hatch happens at sunset.

Hi Mak. I thought I would chime in and tell you to watch the J:son Sweden method of making extended bodies with foam. The size you tied in the video would be great for a Green Drake or Hexigenia Limabata adult, but using their method, I have tied extended bodies down to a size 20, while still maintaining the correct proportions. I hope all is well and Happy New Year my friend!

@@Makflies we just returned from fishing Dumfries & Galloway lochs & the rainbows loved your green buzzer with blue cheeks & a red arse. Took plenty of fish, but we lost some & what remains are well chewed. Will keep a look out for your website.👍
