Hey Barry absolutely love this pattern, I picked up the tool and started tying a few and they look incredible, can't wait to try them out this mayfly season in the Sierras! One question I have, any tips for forming the foam that you insert to the correct shape to fill it out? I've noticed mine ends up a little small sometimes to fit all the way inside the vinyl body and it doesn't look as nice as yours. Cheers and thanks for making these!
@Thefeatherbender Жыл бұрын
Hi Zac, good to hear! All I do as in the video is cut the foam into thin strips and then taper it a little with my scissors and just before I insert it into the body, I roll it in-between my finger and thumb, to squash it down. It will swell and fill the body quite quickly after you have inserted it. Good luck...

Beautiful fly and great video. I have not used wax before. What is the wax used for?
@Thefeatherbender2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. A little wax on your tying thread will hold materials securely in place with only a couple of wraps. It also strengthens your tying thread and makes the fly stronger and last longer.

Thanks, yes the vinyl gloves have to be 'POWDER FREE' .
@webbsolution201024 күн бұрын
ok a more practical comment on this approach - I dont think all Vinyl gloves are the same - I cant seem for example to get the tag end to melt sufficiently enough to adhere it to the end of the body. I have tried standard Vinyl medical gloves, thicker 8 ml just because it was there and the truly translucent thin options. Nothing seems to melt or adhere so the body unravels. What thickness and brand of gloves are you using ?
@Thefeatherbender24 күн бұрын
Correct! You must use the powder free vinyl gloves.

Gosh, Barry. €20 for the tool. But my resistance wilted and thought OK. Went through the signing-up business and pressed GO, only to find postage added almost the cost of the tool. That's just too fruity, so I'll try to make one. Shame. The maker needs agents.
@Thefeatherbender2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are difficult to make, the mandril has a very special finish to the surface so you can remove the finished body. Also the slots at the end of the tool I gather is also very difficult. And yes postage has become crazy the last couple of years, even sending flies its too expensive.
