the best dogs in the world.

Absolutely the best, but a challenge if you don't meet them on their own terms with saintly patience and absolute consistency. No loosing your temper with them, but excluding them from fun works perfectly. Mine no longer bothers to challenge my patience, because she knows that I have longer fuse than she has will to push it. Best wishes from George

The white and tan dogs at the beginning look like border terriers not Patterdales.

My little black broken coated Patterdale will be four soon. I had her neutered just after her second birthday, and she came to me at fifteen months as a rescue case. When I first got her she was beyond annoying, but I have been round Terriers of various types for six decades and now she is loving, sociable, has a riot playing with her dog friends. She remains reticent round most people, and especially children. She warms to people very slowly, but when she does she is delightful. I don't think this reticence is a bad thing. She would never be an easy dog to catch and steal. And if someone did, they would have an escape artist of amazing speed and determination on their hands. She is a little chatterbox, vocalising gently far more than I have ever known in any other dog and is so loyal that if I call her in she comes joyfully to me rather than chase prey or running towards potentially dangerous unfriendly dogs. That can only come from positive re-inforcement. Not treats [I call that bribery] but vocal encouragement and tickles and play. There is only one downside. She is so attached to me by now that though I can leave her in the car while I go into to a shop, she hates staying at home or even with known friends. It is as if she panics and becomes quite manic to come and find me. I am having some metalwork taken out of my leg next week, and though only day surgery, I imagine it will be a trial for my friend [who gave her to me in stead of taking her to a rescue kennel] for the long day it will be. So one downside, which does not worry me, and in all other respects the best dog I ever had the privilege to care for. But getting so well socialised as a young adult [rather than from weaning], and shaving the complete lack of training from her first home has a taken the patience of a minor saint. Initially stubborn, she now does everything she knows how to to be good. But only for me. If I am not there she is a real pain in the posterior.
