40:31 bird type was an unused type still present within the code. It was eventually reworked into the flying type assumedly. Missingno is actually a normal/bird type
@Magma-Idiot-20015 ай бұрын
I always assumed it's a placeholder type, hence why Glitchmons have them most of the time.
@Alienldr5 ай бұрын
@Magma-Idiot-2001 For me, it makes sense that Flying type was originally just bird type, and that's why there's so many birds specifically. But they realized that Golbat, Charizard, Aerodactyl, and Dragonite aren't really birds, so they changed it to be more inclusive. And since it was still in the game it makes me think it was a last minute change, or an oversight that they missed removing everything
@kyleellis18255 ай бұрын
@@Alienldr I always thought they wanted both, but then realized that would leave them with pretty much no flying moves. Kind of feel like Fish type should have been a thing too, considering how many normal/water pokemon we have now. Be nice to split those up now that we do have enough moves.

On the Gen 1 back sprites not resembling the official Pokémon designs, I heard (which may or may not be true) that many Pokémon were designed as their in-game pixel art first for Red and Green, and then Ken Sugimori drew the official artwork based on the sprite art, but also made design changes himself when doing so. If true, it explains why there are some inconsistencies with some Pokémon’s various appearances in Gen 1.

So to Patterz and anyone who doesn’t know what stat experience is, it’s EVs before EVs were a thing. You gain stat experience when you beat Pokémon in Gen 1 and those add up to a maximum amount of 10,000-something in EACH individual stat Edit: I’m probably wrong about the limit on each stat

@HouseHawk625 ай бұрын
I enjoy Smith’s content. I enjoyed his crystal legacy hack very much and I think I like the yellow legacy one even more. I think because there’s so much more to fix in vanilla Gen 1 as opposed to vanilla Gen 2 and yellow legacy does this while still feeling Gen 1.
@theamazingspooderman26975 ай бұрын
I personally think there was more to fix in Gen 2 like the terrible level curve, the trash team choices for Gym Leaders like Bugsy having Metapod and Kakuna when trainers in his gym literally have Butterfree and Beedril, the terrible plot and how it ends as a disappointment at the end, most of Gen 2 pokemon not even being available in Johto, etc. I am a Gen 2 hater and Crystal Legacy fixed the issues I had with Gen 2, especially letting us catch Houndour this early

@14:32 "wait, haze prevented attacking? Why?" Software engineer here! The logical reason for why it would happen is that there's probably a "status" variable that checks what happens before you attack. So like "check status. Status is poisoned. Run poison code: do some damage to pokemon. Proceed like normal." Or "status is confused: flip coin. If heads, proceed like normal. Else, set attack to not allowed. Skip attack. Damage self. Enable attack for next turn." I bet freeze was simply coded as "when freezing pokemon: set status to freeze. Set attack allowed to false." Haze probably just says "set status to normal" and doesn't remove the set attack allowed to false"

16:09 all programming languages technically do that. Pointing at something and turning it on and off is how a computer is built, and that's literally what binary is. 1 is on 0 is off (or is it the other way around I forget). The main difference in later programing languages is that they understand words better and they can turn multiple things on and off with 1 command.

I just realized, aesthetically, they remade Yellow into a Gen 2 game....esp with the included EXP bar. 34:50 You know what's interesting? I noticed in Gen 1 and 2, generally speaking, Hypnosis does not affect certain pokemon, esp Normal/Flying types like Pidgey as often as they do others. This sorta carried on into future games too. I would LOVE to play romhacks on physical GBA or video game console, not the PC. Bug being supereffective against Psychics would have made more sense and balanced the game honestly despite the lack of moves for Bug Type. Shadow/Dark/Creepy Crawly bugs. 43:20 I believe the reason why Koga and Sabrina are at lv50 is because you actually get to face plenty of trainers before then. Celadon City Rocket Hideout + Saffron City Rocket "Hideout" + Bike Road trainers + the route b/w Fuschia and Lavender, basically where Snorlax is. Back then they didn't expect people to have mixed teams or more than one team, so you really only have just 4 strong pokemon in your team that actively fight all the time. 48:20 "Who would fight all the rockets?!" Me.....I do......I NEED the experience and money! I WILL try to juice up my team as much as possible. In later games I'd sometimes be 5-10 lv higher than the gym leader even from fighting all trainres + grinding.

10:57 omg Nidokeen is my favorite mon :v 40:32 Yes, Gen 1 had the BIRD type, an unused type that is neutral against all other types. There apparently are actually Bird/Normal glitch pokémon, specifically MissingNo. and 'M in english RB, and ?????(FC) in japanese GSC. The reason Smith uses Bird-type is because none of the move selection rules prioritise Bird-type moves, and thus the AI no longer gets caught trying to hit a posion or fighting-type with a "super-effective" Agility 47:00 I started in 4th gen... ish, I actually played a little bit on my friend's GBC on which he had Yellow, and I also played on a couple friends' Sinnoh games, but my first own Pokémon game was actually SoulSilver, I then also got, over time, Platinum, Emerald, Pearl, Black, Black 2, Y and OR, and after that I basically stopped playing. I did recently play a little bit of LG:E on my sister's Switch, but yeah that's it apart from a couple Mystery Dungeon games. PMD:Red and Emerald actually are my only GBA games, and I actually don't own one either, having only played them on my DS lite.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????? ASSEMBLY IN THE 1990S????? Oh lord, I do not wish to remember taking Machine and Assembly Programming in college in the early 90s, which was even then NOT a main coding language (my college focused on Pascal, but was introducing the various forms of C and Visual Basic as well - heck, Fortran and Cobol were offered as optional classes that were still useful in the early 90s due to legacy programs). (looks this up to verify it) WTF, Nintendo. No C compilers existed in the Game Boy SDK due to what hardware they were using for development not having any. I remember having to write a crude compiler in that aforementioned class, where no one finished correctly by when it was originally due and only a few finished after an extension. Serioysly, Nintebdo, you couldn't find any trained, professional programmers willing to help make compilers for popular human readable languages to translate finished programs into machine code for your dev hardware to make orogramming, debugging, and fixing glitches easier????? No wonder the Gen 1 code is a giant kludge if that's the restrictions Game Boy devs had to work under.
