“Balls to the Wall” is a reference to pilots in WWII. When they were trying to go as fast as they possibly could go, a rubber ball on the control stick would hit the front wall of the cockpit. So going balls to the walls means to go all out.

Balls to the wall is from the Vietnam War. There was a ball on the pilots control stick and when it was put against the front wall it would sharply dive. So balls to the wall means to put a fighter jet into a full speed dive.

Correct. That wasn't in question, but yes. The question is what does the phrase actually supposed to embody? What balls are going to the wall and why? Ex: "raining cats and dogs" came from a time where cats and dogs would take shelter in roofs, and the rain would come down hard enough sometimes that cats and dogs would fall from the roof to the ground.
