Not 100% sure but pretty sure they changed the effects of moves so that they don't affect their type. For example flamethrower can't burn fire types and body slam won't paralyze electric types, same for poison

fire and poison types have always been immune to burn and poison status, they didn't do anything to the moves lol

In gen 4 games(onward)fire pokemon could not be burned by moves like tri attack anymore. Electric pokemon could not be paralyzed by body slam from gen 6 games(onward). I was wrong about poison and the move fire moves for burn. From gen 3 onward twin needle could not poison steel types anymore.
