This video will go over the Patterson Developing tank. This includes a full review and how the the tank works and how the reels function. If you are new to photo developing this is a great video since this is one of the most important purchases you will have to make if you are looking to develop film at home.

Read on one the forums that leaks could be esily prevented by pushing center of the lid down (that in turn pushes outer lip of flexible lid outwards and only then it grips correctly to the groove on the tank).- one can check it by looking at the distance from lid to the indentation on the tank side all around - it has to be even when pressed as described.

The lid leaks because its not really meant to be used.... Installing the funnel makes the tank light tigt and then you use thin tube provided by Paterson to swirl the film reel back and forth. Very efective. Does the trick 100%.

But what if you want to flip the tank over a few times during agitation? Isn't that what the top lid is for? I feel pouring chems into these ones is better than the steel tanks.. their plastic lids tend to make a bubble at the top pour opening which slows down or stops the chems while pouring.

@@samsmith2506 If you insist on agitation by inversion, use a stainless steel tank. Good luck loading your film onto the stainless steel reels. Note: if you use the agitator rod (labeled 'agitator' on the booklet included with the tank) rotate in the direction you loaded the film onto the reel. This will prevent the film moving off the reel as it makes contact with the solutions. Just use the agitator and avoid the lid.

@@hectoracevedo4545 , Yeah I use the stainless steel reels and was getting pretty good at it, but i'm not as good now since I haven't been shooting as much nowdays. I just got a used Patterson 'super system 4' tank with 2 35mm plastic reels.

The lid won’t leak if you put on in the same way you put the lid on a Tupperware container. E.g. you “burp” the lid by pushing down on it in the center, not the edges. This creates a slight vacuum in the tank that holds the lid on and prevents leaking.

push down on the middle of the lid to burp some air out and get negative pressure, it will seal better

Patterson tanks use more chemistry then steel but the biggest problem is that if they are the slightest bit wet or dirty, they will bind up going on the reel. You must take the reels apart to dry them or let them dry. Water can stay in the nooks and crannies for days causing you greif in the dark. Metal reels are so much better once you spend a couple minutes to learn how to load them.

I don’t think wearing gloves for everything is needed , especially since greats, like Bret Weston, would tray develop with bare hands and most didn’t get sick, but that’s just me. Thanks!

It's worth it just to not put fingerprints on your film, especially guiding the whole roll in like that

IMO the Patterson tank shown here is the poorest design of tank on the market today. It is also less capable than many older units no longer made. Why? it is made out of a thin, hard plastic. Very easy to break if dropped. The huge internal funnel top must be used, but it traps a huge amount of air in the tank. If use for inversion agitation, it is a better cocktail shaker than film tank. Users report than the reels are hard to clean (type of plastic used?) and get sticky and hard to load. Many users toss the reels and buy the AP reels. It isn't a bargain. It costs as much or more than its alternative from AP, which is also sold by B&H and Freestyle in the US under their house brand names. The lid is hard to attach correctly, and it leaks. So why are so many Pattersons sold? Mindless videos like this one promoting it. Alternatives: the AP. One of the best ever, used on ebay, would be the Unicolor film tank (not the Filmdrum, which is good but a different type). Older stainless steel tanks and reels from Nikor, but not the new thin wire reel Japanese copies.. For new steel reels where price is no object, Hewes.

Just make a better video about AP tank promoting it (= better than calling an overview that someone might actually be looking for a "mindless video".

@@Stanlyok I don't make YT videos because I am too old to learn the technology, and frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. The defective design aspects of the current Paterson tank become self-evident to all who use it. It is basically as good as any tank designed to agitate only by reel rotation, which is not the best way to agitate because it is not as even in its result. If you consider the physics, the film at the outside of the reel always gets about 5 times the agitation of film near the core of the reel. Does that make a big difference? No, but it's a difference you can measure and for more critical users makes a difference.(Okay, I admit that critical users have binned their Paterson tanks years ago anyway.) Basically, its a less well constructed version of the Ansco or Yankee film tanks from the later 1950s and 1960s. They sold for about $5-10 back then, which is about the same as a Paterson if you adjust for dollar inflation over the years.

Found the AP salesman, lol. The funnel does'nt trap air, air leaves the sides as filled. The lid works fine if you just push air out as you fit it for pressure seal.
