Nintendo wanted to be sure that if they eventually released a handheld system with color, that it has the same battery life as the original Game Boy. Funny how Sega, Atari, & NEC didn't realize how important the issue of battery life is. Great ep nevertheless.
@reptilez13
@reptilez13 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it actually was. I think price was. The others with a decent DC adapter would have been fine and more successful if they weren't 2-3x the price of the GB/GBC. Hell the Game Gear even did ok for how smeary the screen was, but nothing like the cheap and replaceable GB Edit: plus iirc it took Sharp coming to them with a new TFT color display and access to the Zilog-like chip to finally do it. Battery life was another thing since they could have easily justified going back to 3-4 batteries etc to consumers if it had 5hrs instead of 10hrs, or sell inexpensive battery extensions. That price is the end all and difference between selling 10mil and 120mil

@@SataniaMcDowel It's also incredibly hard to play indoors without an external light source. I've got a good chunk of the GB revisions, and the GBC is the worst. But, I do give Nintendo credit as at least you were able to get a good external light that plugged into the GB directly. My personal favorite would be the GB Light as it has what appears to be the same technology that Timex introduced with their Indiglo watch dials. A nice consistent bluish-greenish light across the entire display that can be disabled if you have enough light leaving you with just the OG GB dispay.

Just wanted to point out that for Conker's Pocket Tales, it's compatible with both GB and GBC; but the two versions are completely different! @@DailyCorvidit’s a little more complicated than that. The making of perfect dark was a tumultuous period and it wound up with the studio fracturing. The heads were done ( which is why they sold), half the devs went and started Free Rasical and made Timesplitters, and the remnant finished perfect dark and then went to MS. So they would have been a shell of their former glory even if they stayed with Nintendo.

Am really glad they decided to greatly expand the included RAM, as you can really tell that this CPU had a lot of untapped potential that was held back by the lack of RAM on the original Gameboy. Theres quite a bit more performance being squeezed out of this chip w the extra RAM. The music is also more detailed now as a result 😊
@ravagingwolverine
@ravagingwolverine Жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that they did increase the CPU speed for the Game Boy Color. Joe was mistaken on that part of the specs. But your point is still valid as you can see a lot of improvement along with some interesting ideas from those later games. Add to that some really clever developers like Crawfish and Wayforward. The screen is worth mentioning as well. While the small resolution was a big limitation, the GBC's screen handled motion better than the originals and even the Pockets so that also let developers push things further. I never had a GBC, but I remember when it was new and I liked seeing developers do interesting things with it.
@skins4thewin
@skins4thewin Жыл бұрын
@@ravagingwolverine I'd say the GBA is an even more interesting case. Everyone compares it to the SNES but in actuality it was far more powerful than the SNES, and you could clearly see that in some of the 3D titles. There was some truly impressive games for that little ARM chip. Was just a matter of time before ARM CPU's took over the mobile market.
@ravagingwolverine
@ravagingwolverine Жыл бұрын
@@skins4thewin Yeah, the GBA is also interesting in a similar way. I really loved seeing the attempts at 3D games and demakes of console games. I remember Max Payne being really interesting. GBA had a Tomb Raider game that I remember enjoying. And Tekken Advance was surprisingly good, so I heard. When the GBA was current, it was my favorite platform over the consoles of the time. Not only was it more powerful than the SNES, but the games were larger, which helped. But it did lose some of that power advantage, in terms of what was on screen, from having to run the audio in software.
@skins4thewin
@skins4thewin Жыл бұрын
@@ravagingwolverine Totally agree, I spent copious amounts of time playing my GBA, specially once the SP came out & FINALLY got that backlit screen it so desperately needed! The main thing that made it great was not only the power it had for 2D games, but just the game library in general. It had a TON of truly amazing games for it! The GBA still to this day probably has the best overall game library of any portable!

When the original trilogy hit the SNES the portable GameBoy got adapted games (the DK Land ones) that were way inferior to the SNES games. When they released the GBC port of Donkey Kong Country I was very impressed because it was fairly close to the SNES games, all the stages, nice music conversion, way better gameplay than DK Land and very good graphics all things considered. Basically all instructions took multiples of four cycles to complete.

@@guspaz I had always wondered why the Game Boy seemed so slow compared to the SNES or even NES, despite having a higher clock speed (yes, I know clock speed isn't everything, but the discrepancy was pretty extreme). So in a worst case scenario, it's similar to a 1 MHz CPU, but then, it could do better if it's running mostly instructions that take four cycles already?
@guspaz
@guspaz Жыл бұрын
@@3dmarth the best case is that it can execute around one million instructions per second (since it runs at 4.19 MHz), the worst case is less since there are instructions that take 8/12/etc cycles. I’m not super familiar with the NES architecture, I know that the NTSC one runs at 1.79 MHz and that the shortest instruction takes 2 cycles, and they’re not aligned by any multiple (there are instructions that take 2 cycles, 3 cycles, etc). The SNES is a whole other beast, being a 16-bit processor.

Please tell me, how do you get footage with filters/grids to not look like complete ass once uploaded to youtube? Whenever I do it youtube compresses it and ruins my entire image, especially when there is a lot of quick motion. The GBC game look so much better with that effect.

Probably did it through a specific capture card, and then upscaled it on the GPU and uploaded it 4K but it's been upscaled there so all the lines are perfect :) Costs a fortune though, I didn't bother I just use a £60 capture card and put up with blurry lines. The Joe-Pro setup probably costs closer to £250-300 (or even £2500-3000 if you include the GPU). What are you running and what's your setup?

@@DailyCorvid He did respond to me on Twitter and told me, "I upload with a very high bitrate and resolution. So a 4K upload with a bitrate of about 69mbps." For me it all depends on what I'm recording. For PS1 Era and up I play through a Retrotink Upscaler (1080P) or direct HDMI and record with an Elgato HD 60 Pro. For older consoles I generally use Emulators through Retroarch played at 1080p then recorded in OBS. My GPU is an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1080... Definitely beginning to show its age.

My upload bit rate is 12MB/s and that's the highest it will go on my 8GB GPU lolol. Joe uploads at 7 times the rate I do! Elgato is what I have but it sucks I am replacing it! Also have a Loupedeck and a copy of OBS. You're doing better than I bud; I completed failed to record anything below 720p :( I'm a lvl 1 noob lol. @@StilesReviews

With the explosion of retro handhelds, it's crazy to remember some of us paid $30 for THAT version of Street Fighter Alpha 1, while nowadays, you can get the entire CPS2 AND Neo Geo libraries on the go for nearly the same price. That said, I enjoyed every minute of it (although I can't say I liked the GBC Dpad for fighters!) Edit: I'm glad you saved Shantae for last. The game looks like it was made on a completely separate, more powerful system. VERY impressive, and an aspect that might be lost if you didn't see the rest of the stuff on the GBC.

I think my most played GBC game is port of "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2". Developers got incredible amount of style and vibe of original areas and mechanics into portable size. Port of first game "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" also exists but it's bit weirder with topdown perspective instead of sideview used in second one.

By far the best GBC game without a doubt -- most and best overall game for your buck, best soundtrack (and imo one of the best sountracks of ANY 8-bit or 8-bit-adjacent system), best longeivity, best multiplayer features, probably even best graphics for all the unique and better-realized-than-before creatures -- is Pokemon Generation 2 (Gold, Silver and especially Crystal). Like it's no contest, it's leaps and bounds beyond anything any competitor was trying to do, it was crammed full of so much TLC and programming wizardry (seriously, look up stories about its development) and TO THIS DAY is widely considered the best generation of Poekmon of all time, the last generation that all the original creators worked on & the ONLY generation that crammed in the FULL previous generation (with some cuts and shrinks here and there to make it fit on a GBC cart, anyway) so that at the time it was by far the ULTIMATE pokemon game and IMO the forthcoming generations, for all the ways they pushed the series forward, kind of paled in comparison. It's too bad you dislike Pokemon so much that you won't even review it and surely wouldn't understand or appreciate these elements because it's the shining jewel of the system and did the most with its leap in hardware over the normal GB. But hey, you covered Shantae which is easily the silver medalist in all ways for the system lol. You probably don't care about these either but Pokemon Pinball and Pokemon TCG 1 and 2, released all around the same-ish time, are also really excellent games for the system.
