This ending is so genius, all the subtle details are so perfect. Patty's acting shines the most here in my opinion, especially when she cries, because it's very much a realization that she has screwed up, that her daughter and her wanted the same thing from their mothers, to be noticed. Then when Louise hugs her and says "it's okay rose" that line is so tragic, the entire show she is "Mama", but for her to call her Rose in that moment, shows that the damage is done, great subtle line. Also the line " Madame Rose... And her DAUGHTER" Patti delivers that line perfectly, because Rose has not changed at all, in fact it's gotten worse, and she's kind of realized that she screwed up with that one statement, which makes Louise's reaction even more justified, being laughed in her face, Rose starts the show as the most powerful and dominant character, while Louise is at the bottom, now the tables have turned. Which makes The Fading lights at the end such a perfect visual, it sums up the entire show in less than 10 seconds.

The very end when the sign is slowly fading away gave me chills.

Personally, this is a better ending than the original. Not everything in life is a happy ending and this ending perfectly portrays the dark side of life. It was originally done when Angela Lansbury was in the revival.

Angela Lansbury's "Gypsy" ended with Rose losing her mind as she sang "Roses Turn." The curtain came down with her bowing after her last "FOR ME!" This scene with Gypsy was cut. It's really a redundant scene, anyway.

@@unclealandPretty late to this but... A recording from one of Angela's Gypsy performances on Broadway in 1974 has the scene still intact.

What the ending does so well is show us that Louise's success ultimately has to lead to Rose's demise. Psychologically, they're competing to be the bigger star. Rose feels jealous of Louise, but it is only fueled in a vicious cycle because she continues to make her a bigger star.

I think this ending fits closer to the truth. Because between the two women, there was no reconciliation. The memoir was Gypsy's Mommie Dearest, of sorts. Although she says "It's okay Mama" it really isn't. The damage is done.

Admittedly, there was a shift in this production's ending. In previous productions (and movies), I think the emphasis in that line was on: "Madame Rose, and her *DAUGHTER* Gypsy" - indicating that Rose was PROUD of her daughter at long last, and that the two were going to start bonding in a way they never had before. This production had a fascinating TWIST by shifting the emphasis to: "MADAME ROSE, and her daughter Gypsy!" (Patti's delivery of the line made Gypsy seem like an AFTERTHOUGHT. :))

Way better ending than the original. I saw it as if Louise had become the realistic adult and rose became the dilussional kid. Like the fur thing was oversized on rose and she followed after Louise like a kid follows their parent. She's laughing as to say you can't have my dream this time. They reconciled but it was put out that it's over for you and not only is it brilliant as an ending but realistic and no the laugh doesn't make Louise seem mean just finally able to be herself and not an attachment of rose
@zackisgreasy4503 Жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more, but I will say I did sort of interpret Louise's laugh differently. I sort of like how it's slightly cruel- its definitely more than warranted if thats the case. But her delivery on that laugh is so complex its amazing. There are hints of rejoice and clarity which is appropriate- like shes realizing that her mother will never change even though shes finally lost her power over her. Its wondeful

Broadway's most exciting actress in Broadway's beefiest, juiciest role ever?!?! A match made in heaven!!!
@Rapture198714 жыл бұрын
@fountainchain126 She laughs at her because Rose STILL seems to want Louise to be an *EXTENSION* of her OWN self, even after Louise has become a superstar. It should be "GYPSY, and her mother, Rose" as opposed to "MADAME ROSE....and her daughter Gypsy!" - Louise laughs derisively, realising that her mother hasn't really changed very much after all.

Gosh, what a wonderful idea it was to let the ROSE slowly dissapear, easy but very impressive..I love the idea of this ending, it is better then a cheap happy end (yet I am crying)...

I have had the idea (for a few years now) of trying to get a proposal to make the REAL life story of Gypsy's mother, the 'hotel' and everything. It would be dark, not a musical, but fascinating and 'falling into place' regarding her personality and her two daughters actual lives.

The Perfect ending for Gypsy. Such a small yet powerful scene that ties everything together.

Truly the best ending I’ve ever seen to this musical-in real life, Gypsy Rose Lee and her mother never reconciled. The idea that Rose held onto her own delusion and watched it fade before her eyes is so dramatically poignant.

OMG i CRY EVERYTIME with this ending... Is better than the original. I don't know why but I really identify with characters like Rose and Effie (Dreamgirls).

In the original production there is a happy ending with Rose and Louise reconciling and she likes Rose's idea. However, in this revival, they decided to use the ending from the 1974 production.

@DivaBehavior i saw the film with rosalind, and the words were the same, but it was nowhere near this sad. its just like...it looked there might have been some possibility for a good ending, but it didnt happen. it felt li,ke for me, that Rose was hoping for something happy with her last line, and i was wanting it for her, but it didnt come... know what i mean?

...i'm not sure how i feel at the end of this. is thats the way its supposed to be?

Nope it sure wasn't used in the original either. I love Patti Lupone but it all seems a little Patti padded.
@wmsanders200112 жыл бұрын
This ending was most definitely NOT used in the 1974 revival. They walked off together and as they walked the lights started to glow on the runway and ROSE turned and they bumped out, thus letting go of her dream and going on with her life...not a happy ending but a real one. This ending is so manipulative and when I saw it, I found it ridiculous and indulgent.

This Style of a 'Happy Ending' is Fake, and NOT anywhere near the Reality of Gypsy's and Dainty June's relationship with their Mother. So Broadway Fake. The Merman Ending is THE one and ONLY True Ending....
@joeyjosephs7 жыл бұрын
This acting is too over the top. Plus the original ending was better, because near ending are true, however this makes Gypsy look cold towards rose and she wasn't .

joey josephs Rose was a real life murderer and I like this ending way better because it's realistical instead of the happy ending
