We see a sea of glowing screens now in restaurants and bars - and no not fast food. It is appalling. You're on a date with this person and you can't stay off FaceBook or keep from texting someone else? Really? Or you're a couple but you can't have a conversation - each of you has your face lit up by your phone. There is no flirting, no sexy precursor to or promise of what may come later on in the evening..sad and boring. This boorish behavior sends a loud and clear message - to others in your presence - he, she or they are not important or interesting. It also a whole lot about you and your priorities - your can't seem to hold an intelligent conversation and don't care to.

I'm a performer. I've had people take out their phone and start texting, or scrolling through Facebook while I'm performing. Its especially annoying when they're sat in the front row. A few times I was able to talk to them at intermission. More often than not their answers were a variety of: "I didn't mean to", "I wasn't paying attention", or they didn't want to go in the first place and were uninterested. My favorite/least favorite excuse was: "I'm only here to see my friend". As a person, I understand that. As a performer though, if you pull out your phone you are being rude and have become a distraction. Its way less distracting if a person just gets up and leaves. As a performer, I work very hard. It usually takes months of planning and rehearsing for an act that's maybe 6 mins. I get it if a person isn't interested in my performance. They don't have to be. That's fine. But please try to put yourself in the performer's shoes. Please think about how it would feel to work so hard on something that you are proud of, only to have a complete stranger demonstrate their disinterest or displeasure. I feel like most people know what that feels like, and if they're being honest, wouldn't want to deal with it. A person can make any excuse they want, but in the end I believe they know they're making a conscious choice to be dismissive/disrespectful.

I agree completely, it's about common courtesy. Some people are just pigs.

It’s only a distraction for a performer if they are so self absorbed that they can’t perform unless they have everyone’s attention. The world does not revolve around you. Other people have lives. If you can’t perform on stage when one person is not paying attention to you, then maybe your just not that good of an actor.
@jennya98382 жыл бұрын
@@davidrojas7909 I'm a burlesque performer. It's a bit different. I'm actually out in the audience interacting with people. If a person is on their phone at a burlesque show they actually distract the audience as much as the performer. It's considered extremely bad form, like talking during a movie or heckling a comedian.
@jennya98382 жыл бұрын
When I'm on a big stage and can't really see the audience I honestly don't care if people are on their phones or talking. I usually perform in bars. They're loud. But in a 15 or 20 seat room when I'm literally standing in front of the person, all eyes are on them. Not me. It's usually much more quiet and a lot darker. Also no disrespect; in a situation where a person is literally the only one on stage at an event they're being paid to perform at, they should be the center of attention. Especially because people pay to watch the show.

I agree with Patti Lupone. I hate when people text or go on their phone in movie theaters or during performances like this ne. I don't pay to have a screen flashed in my face. I was at an orchestra performance once, and a lady was actually recording the performance with her flash on ... to make matters worse, she was sitting in the mezzanine behind the orchestra, so every single person who was facing the orchestra had a light shining in their face, including the conductor. It went on for about 5 minutes until a couple staff members stopped her. For the rest of the night, all the ushers in that part of the mezzanine kept looking at her, lol. Also in movie theaters I get really annoyed when people are on their phone for an extended period of time. I understand taking 5-10 seconds to briefly check your phone - maybe you got a flurry of texts or maybe you had important emails or something - but looking at your phone for more than 50 seconds is just plain annoying. I would never. I made it a habit now to turn my phone off completely during live performances or in movie theaters. I don't want to be "that guy" to someone else. Plus who pays money to see a live performance and then goes on their phone? Not only is it disrespectful to the people in the audience, but it's disrespectful to the people who actually work to put on these productions in the first place. I understand a movie theater is not that big of a deal ... but like a live performance? No two performances are ever the exact same, so you're experiencing something totally unique ... why would you go on your phone for an extended period of time when you paid to see a performance of something? That's just plain rude and doesn't make sense. I would rather go alone than suffer the mistake of bringing someone that can't appreciate the experience. I'm not bringing you out to dinner or to the mall ... I'm bringing you to an actual live production of something. If you can't respect it, I don't want you anywhere near me.

Yes, she's a legend and all of that, but she's done stuff like this before. She literally stopped a show to yell at someone. How is that fair to the rest of the audience? I go to the theatre to get lost. I believe those characters are real for those 2+ hours. Don't ruin that. Don't break character. And why is taking your phone out during a concert or when meeting a celeb wrong? When I saw Bradley Cooper on Broadway, he took selfies with everyone after the show. It was awesome. And I use my phone at concerts to take pictures for me to remember the night and share with my friends. I've never had an artist yell at me for that. That's weird.
