I watched my mama and step dad dance to this many times. And when I was 12 he taught me to waltz. And we danced to this. That was in 1961. Miss them both.

The harmonized version is very awkward...the self-harmonizing was in its infancy when that version of the song was cut and it's very clunky.

You are right, harmonization impairs the touching quality of the melody itself. The simpler the better. Such repertoire is popular, close to the land it grew from. Harmonization, grand orchesters are not what we need here.

Absolutely the best version of this amazing song. That delightfully soft voice, that incredibly beautiful tune…and the elegant video, sends a tingling sensation down the spine. Alas, they do not make music this sophisticated anymore. Is this genre of music lost for ever? For someone who seriously started listening to music as a child in the 1980s, I had not heard of Patti Page before, but finding this video from the 1950s on U-Tube was like hitting the jackpot. I would love to buy a vinyl 45 of this version, if they would release it.

Her beautiful contralto voice is a great favourite of mine. The original time that she recorded this song it was recorded as a duet with her own voice rerecorded in close harmony. Brilliant. That version was in 1950 or 51 was on the billboard at NUMBER ONE for 13 weeks. Held that record for a very long time.

I,too, simply love this version of The Tennessee Waltz and I doubt that it will ever be surpassed. I did, however, find a really beautiful rendition on KZbin under “Lisa del Bo Tennessee”. It was recorded in 2002 by a terrific Belgian singer, Lisa del Bo, who has done very faithful recordings of many 50s & early 60s N. American hits. Although Lisa might be singing in any one of the five or six languages she is fluent in, she still succeeds in paying homage to the originals.

Excellent version of this song about things that sometimes happen. But if that happens to any of us we should not lament it. After all what is good for some person might not be for another and we cannot really forsee what could have happened. If we lose somebody just because she danced with someone else it only proves she did not love us only felt attracted.

chingching847 It's a little late telling u this, but this song will never be forgotten by Tennesseans! It is our State song, sung many, many times during all University of Tennessee sports, and always after the game. We even had Patti sing it during half time at a football game a few years back and the response from over 110,000 people was stupendous. They gave her a standing ovation!. When we were kids in the UK, this was my sister's favorite, always singing it, never knew she'd live in Tennessee, but she married and they moved here when her hubby became a professor at UT, then they got season tickets for UT football. She wrote me and said she couldn't get over the fact they played it often at the games. I moved here and got season tickets, so we'd go together. Seeing and hearing Patti was the greatest event, she didn't know about it until they announced it at half time, much to the crowd's delight and my sister's! Sadly, we're too old to go to football or see our Lady Vols anymore, but we always watch them on the TV and still sing this wonderful, never to be forgotten song when they play it, usually after the game! GO VOLS. Keep playing this until somebody turns it into horrible rap.
