thanks for this great analysis -- i came to this video last year and though at first enjoyed its comedy, at its end I was left again stunned with Patti's vocals. After the card snafu and missing background singers, it seems Patti got her footing back and by the song's close was belting and riding the music. I particularly enjoy her little head bop on the final closing note, rather like, YES, I still DID this, haha. i'm in no way versed in vocal technique, but particularly in what you're describing as her 'brassy' tones, to my layperson's eyes, it almost seems like her jaw/back teeth are approaching a clenched position, while the maxilla is coming back and the tongue out slightly. so fascinating to me, singers' ability to manipulate their instrument structurally. a great example of what i'm talking about is in Patti's tribute performance of "Hero" to Mariah Carey. Bless the cameraman who chose to keep Patti in profile throughout much of the song, and she has this "clenched", pulled back appearance to her face, though clenched is probably a poor descriptor as I don't mean tense. Anyway, thanks for the great analysis. I'm enjoying your analyses.

The brassy tone is an interesting topic unto itself. You are quite right in the description of the vowels. I should have dipped more into that cuz there are cool things that add to that effect as well.
