My mom went to high school with Smith...My mom said she is not surprised at all her accomplishments, as she was beyond talented even at that very young age ...and kind...just a great girl...My mom said their classmates always knew she was going to do great things...and she has! Congrats on all your achievements Ms. Smith! With love, from New Jersey

In the 80's, I dated a guy who had been among the Manhattan hippie/art, social scene; living in Manhattan during the era, of the mid/late 1960's to late 1970's.. working on their various forms of art. Most of them seemed to be from privileged families...they were eccentrics. They owned beautiful lofts, brownstones, apartments; mainly the west village, east village. I didn't notice any of them, working..... It seemed no one held conventional employment....At that point in time, that I had been mildly acquainted, they seemed to be middle aged, in their 50's.

I sat passenger in my moms car as she sung this song passionately every time it came on, each time with as much passion as the time before. I think the 80's were the best decade in music overall, but if I had to put a 10 year period I'd probably do 1974-1984 or 1975-1985 for that same exact reason. The pop charts are littered with all kinds of different genres which I doubt we will see again and that is a shame. Top 40 songs are mass (and over) produced trash now. There are a few decent hits every year, but nothing like the past. Why do commercials and movies that appeal at a younger age still dip into songs from the 80's? I do not think they'll be dipping into the songs from the 2020's in 40 years.

I think what you mean is this is a Bruce Springsteen masterpiece. Patti didn't really have a whole lot to do with it if she helped her write it but let's be honest Co riding doesn't mean you really contributed a whole lot. Her vocals are lackluster and her guitar playing is about in the same category. Patti is famous because of her fuck the world, oh and while we're at it fuck you too attitude. That and the fact of all the famous people she hung out with the likes of Andy Warhol which really propelled her career William S Burroughs, Springsteen and all the other early CBGB alumni. If you listen to the rest of Patty's work it's all crap with the few exceptions. You have to realize there were very few if any women at during that time with that kind of attitude. All she was doing was attempting to masquerade is a 1950s beatnik which is why she hung around W.S. Burroughs and constantly picking his brain in materials for little nuggets she could use for herself. Lou Reed's another one that's right up there with Patti Smith is being highly overrated if not the most overrated.

Being into rock and metal, absolutely loved the version by 80's Metal band Keel which was flashy, aggressive and always got me geared up to rock out while never deviating from the intimacy of it within. But when I finally heard this, the original and ultimately the best, I don't think I've ever cried a river like that. It just opened up all the emotions within me and few songs have ever had that effect on me. Just timeless.

I still have this on vinyl, and have my ancient (ugly) stereo system in my living room so I can listen to gems like this, in their real form. To reach the depths of one's soul, broken up digital bits just don't cut it. I first heard this song in 1978, working in a restaurant kitchen as a kid, and it shook up my world. I still don't understand the power of this song. All I know is it is a force of awe, wonder and beauty. As is passionate love. There is no other song that so thoroughly captures the otherworldly nature of that kind of love, that brings one to tears of joy. Yes, I've known that, and am forever grateful for the richness of life.
