@@michaelreynolds3592 SORRY I beg to differ when it comes to Las. he is a below mediocre drummer . he was good in "And justice for all" and just ok in the black album and load after that he is just below mediocre. Also watch him live in the last 20 years and you will know how bad he is And I am a drummer btw. Metallica would have sounded a real better drummer . If you compare him to all the drummers in metal from his time and now he would go down to the bottom of the list.

@@momomono795 ... I believe even Lars would agree with you. I believe he said "these guys play in a completely different zip code than I can". But, I am not a huge fan of Metallica or Lars. But it seems to me, that while I am a far better drummer than he is, and have played my heart out everytime, he is still making big money, selling out arenas... (yes its the whole band), and I'm defending him barely making a living. You have to give a legacy the respect it's due. Or you will never respect the bassist you play behind.

Peter Begman As a drummer of 20 years who has been attending Slayer shows since 95; I've seen Dave, Paul and John perform live on many occasions --and not just with Slayer. Dave outperforms Paul in regards to timing, fluidity, dynamics, creativity, stage charisma, power and double bass. It's night and day. Paul was pretty good in the early days but never the level of Dave. There's a shitload of footage to compare them. It's not even close. John Dette also bests Paul. I saw him with Slayer in 96 at The Whiskey in LA. And though they were about even on the hands, John's double bass blew Paul out of the water.

@@Vorgaloth You are absolutely right. I've seen both Dave and Paul live, it's literally night and day. Dave is far superior to Paul. Paul's abilities eroded tremendously since Diablous. Not sure how he got through the recording of GHUA. Dave to this day is still a beast behind the kit, you can find footage everywhere. Dette ran circles around Paul as well, Slayer should have kept him instead of bring Paul back in 1997.

@@iantouzel638 I think Lombardo does in fact do a better job on the double bass in certain songs. For the record, perhaps take a look at that crazy fast part of Angle Of Death, and you'll see what I mean... But What Paul lacks in that style of Lombardo's doubles, he makes up with his hands. In general Paul makes the bass (or the double bass) sound much more technically complex, making dave seem monotonous and simple-fashiones. For Whatever one of them lacks, the other makes up with his very own original excellence. So that's actually my streched comparison.

He plays 8ths, but in some weird kind of 'double stroke' motion that isn't strictly in time. You can see it in any video of him playing a skank beat. IMO, Paul's inability to play straight 8ths is his biggest weakness, especially in comparison to Lombardo.

IMO Divine Intervention was not even close to Seasons in the Abyss. It was downhill after Seasons. Divine isn't that memorable except for dittohead and killing fields and they rarely play anything live from this album. I pretty much yawn through Divine and prefer Diabolus over it if I had to listen to one of the two. Disciple from God Hates Us All is right up there with anything they ever wrote, and I enjoy that track as much as RIB or Angel of Death so I wouldn't say it was completely downhill either but for the most part they hit their peak in 1990.

PatientMental I think the production is crisp and it has amazing drumming and some interesting riffs,,,however the quality of the song writing except for Killing Fields and Dittohead are pretty much filler tracks and not of the same quality that put Slayer on the map. I don't know about you, but having to listen through the track divine intervention or 213 is as boring as elevator music to me. I will say this though, the RIB / Killing fields intro from touring this album in 1994 / 1995 is probably my fav opening tracks they ever opened their shows with.

A lot of peaple are whining that Bostaph and Lars are suck. Here is my massage for these ones: Beating the double pedal as fast as you can dont makes you a good drummer. Nor yet a good musician. Bostaph and Lars are musicians. They are composing their drum themes. They are masteres of their instruments. That is why they are really cool. And drummers like Lombardo are only a machine gun I appraciate the technical skills but that is not music for me. And as for me I never liked too much his drum themes. The slayer was best with Bostaph. Respect!

Lars can't keep a steady tempo which is one of the absolute most basic, important things you need to do in a rock band. That's why he's a mediocre to poor drummer. Great ideas and songwriting, but he just can't do it consistently live. The only thing Paul doesn't do is consistent, even 16th note barrages on the double bass at high speeds anymore. Everything else he does is light years beyond Lars' ability.
