Lol..I went to uni in Liverpool in the late 80' s & studied design/engineering at Hopwood Hall.( A really weird place that was owned by the water board) lol.I agree with you about his character being spot on😂😂
@mrrolight Жыл бұрын
@@SophieW-z9r Hopwood Hall was a further education college less than a mile from Cardinal Langley where I, and Coogan, went to school. Both places were run by Catholic de la Salle brothers. I remember in about 1979 the whole school going to catholic mass at Hopwood Hall on Founder's Day and singing the school song which went as follows: "Saint la Salle out dearest father, Hear thy loving children pray, Grant that we with thy protection grow in virtue day by day." But it was the time of peak punk and we bawled it with the gusto of Johnny Rotten and no one got punished because everyone was guilty. At the end there was whooping and hollering and applause and cheering. The very best Catholic mass in the history of the church. The deputy head, Jock Crawford, single-handedly tried to quell the verve, which made it worse.

I was a student when this was first broadcast and the joke about a student writing a cheque for a bag of chips was spot on. It's a bit dated now though, I doubt anyone under the age of 40 even knows what a cheque is.

Paul and Pauline Calf were Steve Coogan's best and nearly only funny character. But I think he put all his eggs into the "Alan Partridge" Basket because I think Americans found the obnoxiousness of him funny ? therefore getting a wider range of viewers where as Paul Calf doesn't seem like a character Americans would understand.
@mrrolight Жыл бұрын
Partridge is entirely aimed at a British audience. He has never been geared toward an American audience which is why all his references are way beyond the ken of Americans.
