If neither of you have seen "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", that would be why you didn't get the significance of the flat-top mountain (which is a real place in Wyoming). Also, Blythe Danner (who played older Tara) bears a very strong resemblance to Melinda Dillion, who was in "Close Encounters". I suspect that was one of the reasons why Danner was in this movie.

The latino room attendant saying "What do you mean aliens??" was thinking they might have meant illegal aliens. The agent named Lorenzo Zoyle was a reference to a movie title "Lorenzo's Oil" Agent Zoyle shot the radio and said, "Boring conversation anyway" as a reference to Han Solo doing the same during the prison break in Star Wars. "I can't believe she's gone" was another Star Wars reference. The "Black Vampire" sword was a reference to the movie "Blade". Watch the book release scene at the very end of the movie closely. Lorenzo's Oil is a 1992 Susan Sarandon / Nick Nolte film based on a true story about parents trying to find a treatment/cure for their son, Lorenzo, who was diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). The experimental treatment that was developed for asymptomatic ALD is derived from olive oil and rapeseed oil (what we call Canola oil in the store), and was named after their child, Lorenzo Odone, thus Lorenzo's Oil.

Fun Fact: when Ruth asks where the 3rd guy is ("where is the other one?"), because she heard 3 voices or shows 3 shadows the day before, in the French version, she asks "where is the 3rd "type"" ("Où est le 3ème type ?") , because "type" can designate a guy, but it's is a little play on words, because "une rencontre du 3ème type" in French = "encounters of the third kind", like Spielberg's film. (logically translated into French as: "Rencontre du troisième type" for "Encounters of the Third Kind") I think it's a very good adaptation/translation. Reading this story myself in 2019 inspired me to write a Flat Earth comedy for the duo called FLATHEADS and have it be the first entry in my own 'Cornetto' trilogy (there were afterall 7 Cornetto flavours by the time they made their third official entry so with my 3 that makes 7 😎 Fingers crossed.

I can't believe George has no idea what Devil's Tower is (the strange mountain-like feature he thinks has a spaceship inside it), or that it's the central image in Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". (I also can't believe he doesn't get the joke early in the film when the undocumented alien bringing them their food responds to the question of whether he believes in aliens with "What do you mean by 'alien'?) Oh, and when Spielberg heard about them making this film, he begged to be included. That is actually Steven Spielberg talking through the squawk box to the character Paul.

Basically the entire backbone of the movie is a Close Encounters homage. The X-Files. Alien(s). The Karate Kid (the hand-rubbing gesture Paul does before applying his powers). Roswell (the TV show, which had a remake more recently - the healing power probably came from there). Total Recall (three-breasted alien chick). Indiana Jones (the short-round reference). Star Wars series. Probably a ton of others.

24:43 Another Classic reference, and Blythe Danner will always be both Hotter and Cooler than her daughter. 24:56 "Lorenzo's Oil" was a 1992 Drama starring Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon. I've never watched it, but I worked in a video store through the mid-nineties.😉 26:19 Jinx! George owes me a Coke. But we'll let it slide since he did ask for a "squashing", and his wish is granted momentarily. 28:31 Phrasing! C'mon guys, are we not doing "Phrasing" anymore? 30:30 Best trivia section ever, because of that intro. 🤣

This is the first time I'm noticing Simon Pegg wearing an Invincible t-shirt and this movie was made years before the invincible series. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost really had their finger on what would be popular in the future nerd fandom.
