If neither of you have seen "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", that would be why you didn't get the significance of the flat-top mountain (which is a real place in Wyoming). Also, Blythe Danner (who played older Tara) bears a very strong resemblance to Melinda Dillion, who was in "Close Encounters". I suspect that was one of the reasons why Danner was in this movie.

The latino room attendant saying "What do you mean aliens??" was thinking they might have meant illegal aliens. The agent named Lorenzo Zoyle was a reference to a movie title "Lorenzo's Oil" Agent Zoyle shot the radio and said, "Boring conversation anyway" as a reference to Han Solo doing the same during the prison break in Star Wars. "I can't believe she's gone" was another Star Wars reference. The "Black Vampire" sword was a reference to the movie "Blade". Watch the book release scene at the very end of the movie closely. The agent who "perished" in the house explosion was in the audience as a very excited burn victim.

Lorenzo's Oil is a 1992 Susan Sarandon / Nick Nolte film based on a true story about parents trying to find a treatment/cure for their son, Lorenzo, who was diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). The experimental treatment that was developed for asymptomatic ALD is derived from olive oil and rapeseed oil (what we call Canola oil in the store), and was named after their child, Lorenzo Odone, thus Lorenzo's Oil.

Fun Fact: when Ruth asks where the 3rd guy is ("where is the other one?"), because she heard 3 voices or shows 3 shadows the day before, in the French version, she asks "where is the 3rd "type"" ("Où est le 3ème type ?") , because "type" can designate a guy, but it's is a little play on words, because "une rencontre du 3ème type" in French = "encounters of the third kind", like Spielberg's film. (logically translated into French as: "Rencontre du troisième type" for "Encounters of the Third Kind") I think it's a very good adaptation/translation. And the "Boring conversation anyway" after shooting on the radio, is a StarWars Episode IV A New Hope reference, with Han Solo in the Death Star.

*BEST TRIVIA:* This film came about because on the set of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, whilst being interviewed for a magazine, they were asked _"So, what's you're next film about?"_ ... and one of them joked the answer _"Two friends go across America and find an alien"_ ... this story stayed with them over the years and because of constant delays in the making of the third Cornetto movie, they decided to sit down and write it, being made before AT WORLD'S END, this is what made people call it the unofficial entry. Reading this story myself in 2019 inspired me to write a Flat Earth comedy for the duo called FLATHEADS and have it be the first entry in my own 'Cornetto' trilogy (there were afterall 7 Cornetto flavours by the time they made their third official entry so with my 3 that makes 7 😎 Fingers crossed.

So, there's a handful of references to other movies you may have missed: The "mission from God" us a reference to The Blues Brothers "Boring conversation anyway" is a line Han Solo says in the first Star Wars, complete with shooting the communication console. Lorenzo's Oil (Lorenzo Zoil) is the name of a movie...possibly the most obscure reference in the film. The Mountain is Devil's Peak, a real mountain that plays a big plot point in Close Enocunters of the Third Kind. At least you caught the Aliens reference with "get away from her you b!tch" 😅

See, now you have to react to Jason Bateman in "Hancock". There are SOOOOOOOOO many SF references in this film! I can't believe George has no idea what Devil's Tower is (the strange mountain-like feature he thinks has a spaceship inside it), or that it's the central image in Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". (I also can't believe he doesn't get the joke early in the film when the undocumented alien bringing them their food responds to the question of whether he believes in aliens with "What do you mean by 'alien'?) Oh, and when Spielberg heard about them making this film, he begged to be included. That is actually Steven Spielberg talking through the squawk box to the character Paul.

My son and I flew from England to the USA in 2017 to watch the solar eclipse in Idaho (he was 14 at the time), and we hired an RV two weeks beforehand so we could drive from Colorado to Idaho and back and do some sightseeing. Since we'd watched this film together previously, I secretly planned an overnight stop at Devil's Tower. In Wyoming he kept asking me where we were going, and I wouldn't say. But eventually I relented and just replied "you'll know it when you see it." :) It was really great to be there, and at the campsite where we parked, we got to watch Close Encounters of the Third Kind on a big TV outside, with the real Devil's Tower looming up behind it. Incredible memories from that trip!

This was so much fun to watch and revisit. My grandad and I used to watch movies together all the time, seeing whatever was on at the time regardless of knowing anything about it beforehand. I was 14 when this movie came out and because it was rated 15, and we’d seen everything else that was out, my grandad lied about my age so that we could watch this together. It’s one of my more…. ‘memorable’ screenings with him shall we say - I don’t think either of us spoke for about 10 minutes after it finished. I’m not sure who was more embarrassed to be honest…. I definitely left the screening with a broader vocabulary, shall we say!

@3:25 Jorge thinks they're referring to illegal aliens, not space aliens. @22:57 is a reference to one of Han Solo's coolest lines in Star Wars: A New Hope. And the next scene - that flat top mountain is from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

I am glad you are back and feeling better George. I had the same surgery. I know that feeling before that procedure. I am still hoping for you Simone to feel better. Looks like you still have the cold. ☹️ I wish you both well! ✌️🥰👍💕

"boring conversation anyway" - a reference to the first Star Wars movie

The soundtrack really slaps. I got to see this twice in the theaters and I watch it a couple of times a year, such a fun movie. Edgar Wright was going to direct it but was pulled off to do Scott Pilgrim vs. the World instead, so everybody won 😁 It's not Cornetto because there is no Cornetto in the movie, but I often wonder how cheeky it would have been to have somebody eating a Drumstick or Nutty Buddy cone instead 😆 To go further down the rabbit hole, I've heard that parent company Unilever now sells the Cornetto in the US, but under the marketing of Klondike Cones.

Fun facts: the “boring conversation anyways” line is a reference to Star Wars and the location that’s considered obvious is from the movie Close Encounters where the alien ship is flying above the earth

They filmed a lot of the later driving scenes near my house (in northern New Mexico). I think about the movie often when I go down those roads.

The Little A'lee'Inn is a real cafe in Roswell. Lorenzo Zoil is supposed to sound like Lorenzo's Oil which is a movie about a man who invented a special oil to treat his son's sickness.

Lorenzo's Oil is a 1992 Drama film about a true story of a young boy who is saved from an incurable condition with a new treatment. I have never seen it, nor do I understand why it was clearly referenced when agent Lorenzo Zoil full name is mentioned.

There are so many references in this movie that are flying clean over your heads (but that's an easy problem to fix, just catch up on all these great shows!): Close Encounters of the Third Kind (my favourite movie of all time) - the opening scene, the Devil's Tower, Wyoming reference, her leaving with the ship, the mother ship reveal, even the helicopter fake-out. Basically the entire backbone of the movie is a Close Encounters homage. The X-Files. Alien(s). The Karate Kid (the hand-rubbing gesture Paul does before applying his powers). Roswell (the TV show, which had a remake more recently - the healing power probably came from there). Total Recall (three-breasted alien chick). Indiana Jones (the short-round reference). Star Wars series. Probably a ton of others.

24:43 Another Classic reference, and Blythe Danner will always be both Hotter and Cooler than her daughter. 24:56 "Lorenzo's Oil" was a 1992 Drama starring Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon. I've never watched it, but I worked in a video store through the mid-nineties.😉 26:19 Jinx! George owes me a Coke. But we'll let it slide since he did ask for a "squashing", and his wish is granted momentarily. 28:31 Phrasing! C'mon guys, are we not doing "Phrasing" anymore? 30:30 Best trivia section ever, because of that intro. 🤣
